The OnePlus 8 Pro comes in two versions. For £799/$899 you get 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, and the handset has an Onyx Black backplate. Paying £899/$999 gets you 12GB of RAM, 256GB of storage and a new Glacial Green glass backplate. This is the version I was sent to test and the color contrasts are amazing and absolutely pleasing to the eye – at least to my eye.
Photos don’t really do justice to the glacial green backdrop. The green-blue surface is matte, catches light at certain angles, and is fingerprint-resistant. After a good week, I didn’t have to wipe my fingerprints once.
The back doesn’t feel as slip-resistant as on the Huawei P40 Pro and is slightly wavy in the hand – albeit a little less severe than on the OnePlus 7T Pro, which I use as my main handset. while now
The camera diamond on the back of the OnePlus 8 Pro juts out quite a bit, as is common these days, and some elements of the camera setup sit outside the diamond, giving it a slightly asymmetrical look. The rhombus protrudes so much that the mobile phone rattles on the table when you push it towards the screen. That’s a little irritating, but it’s not unique to OnePlus phones and is a necessary compromise between wanting a thin (8.5mm) handset and good camera performance.

I’m glad OnePlus has retained one feature, and that’s the alert slider. Located on the right side of the handset, this toggles between silent, vibrate, and ring modes. It’s slightly recessed and easy to find by touch: so simple, but so useful.
The power button below the alert slider has an additional function: a single press locks the handset and a long press brings up Google Assistant. To turn off the phone, long press this button and the top left of the audio track. Google Assistant fans will love this feature, but the volume rocker combo will take some getting used to.
Along the bottom edge are the USB-C slot, speaker grille, and SIM tray. It is a 5G capable device thanks to its Snapdragon 865/X55 chipset and the caddy supports two SIM cards, one of which can be 5G. It’s nice to see Wi-Fi 6 on board, expanding the handset’s state-of-the-art communications capability. It’s also the first phone from OnePlus to receive an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance.
The OnePlus 8 Pro is a big phone – slightly larger than the OnePlus 7T Pro, with a slightly larger screen. I think the 7T Pro’s screen is great for everyday use, but the handset is a bit difficult to pocket. For OnePlus 8 Pro owners, this compromise will be a bit higher. The OnePlus 8 Pro runs on Android 10 with a slightly touch-sensitive OxygenOS skin that allows for a range of settings adjustments, as detailed below in relation to the display. The 6.78-inch Fluid AMOLED screen has a resolution of 3168×1440 pixels (513 ppi, aspect ratio 19.8:9). OnePlus has dispensed with the pop-up front camera it used on the 7T Pro, this time opting for a small notch in the top left of the screen. By default, the top bar of the screen is set to black, so the camera disappears into it. Changing this to match the rest of the screen will reveal the “hole punch” camera, but it still works seamlessly in day-to-day use. I like it better than the pop-up arrangement: face login is easy and worked flawlessly for me here, as does the in-screen fingerprint sensor.
The screen is slightly curved towards the long edges so that it appears almost frameless. The bottom bezel is around 3mm and the top around 2.3mm thick and we calculated the screen-to-body ratio to be 90.9%.

Users can manually switch between 3168×1440 (QHD+) and 2376×1080 (FHD+). I went for the higher resolution, which makes text and images look sharper. In fact, using the AMOLED screen is a real pleasure. The colors are vibrant, the size makes reading and viewing web pages a great experience, and videos look great too.
I’m a big fan of the reading mode and I’m glad it has been retained on the OnePlus 8 Pro. Users can put the handset in monochrome mode or adjust the colors with what OnePlus calls the Chromatic Effect. Both are great for late-night sessions reading e-books or browsing websites. You can set them to automatically switch to reading mode when you launch apps, which is a real plus.
OnePlus optionally supports a refresh rate of 120 Hz, which certainly provides a very smooth video that can reach 120 fps. If not, the handset uses MEMC (Motion Estimation, Motion Compensation) technology to boost the frame rate. This can be toggled on and off as needed.
The refresh rate and MEMC settings are on several levels in the settings area and turning them on and off is a little annoying. When I tested both with some video content, I didn’t notice much of a difference. Just as mobile phones don’t really want to push ever higher screen resolutions, sometimes there’s a sweet spot for video enhancement, and going beyond that is a solution looking for a problem.

According to OnePlus, this is the first OnePlus phone to support wireless charging, and the optional Warp Charge 30 Wireless Charger 4 is capable of charging the 510mAh battery from 1% to 50% in 30 minutes. A slightly faster charge (50% in 23 minutes) is possible with the Warp Charge 30T wired charger that comes with the handset. I have used both charging methods and found that the fast charge works as described. For example, I happened to be using the wireless charger when the phone was at 68%; After ten minutes of charging, the value increased to 84%. However, it is disappointing that the wireless charger can only be used in portrait mode.
The OnePlus 8 Pro also supports reverse wireless charging – at a more leisurely pace, as usual.
For some reason, the OnePlus 8 Pro didn’t like PC Mark’s battery drain test, so I had to rely on hypothetical tests rather than a benchmark run (I’ll update this review when I get PC Mark to play along). In use, the 4,510mAh battery did a great job of keeping the handset alive even during fairly grueling workloads. Even if you watch TV shows for half an hour on top of a normal day of use where you stream radio for another hour, the battery will not drop below 35%.
