When the Xbox Series X launched, it felt like it was missing a lot of features. Of course, the hardware is incredibly impressive, but even that didn’t stop it from being a hard sell in the first place. However, the console has come a long way since its original release, and several updates have changed the console significantly for the better.
The lack of exclusive games makes it feel like you’re struggling to get the most out of the Xbox Series X, especially with competition from the PS5 and Sony’s exclusive titles. In addition, this is not helped by the console’s continuous use of the Xbox One interface. On the other hand, its user interface is mostly functional and does not require a drastic overhaul. Quite refreshing, actually, given Microsoft’s tendency to change its user interface regularly throughout the days of the Xbox 360.
So, when you first turn on the Xbox Series X, it’s easy to feel a little overwhelmed. It’s only when you explore the console’s array of features that it really starts to shine. An enhanced game library that showcases what Microsoft’s new hardware can do is a good start. Games like Halo Infinite, Forza Horizon 5, and Microsoft Flight Simulator are prime examples of what the Xbox Series X is capable of, and that barely scratches the surface.

We’ve updated our Xbox Series X review to reflect our impressions after using the console for over two years. Microsoft has introduced a welcome update to the X Series and now finally has exclusive titles that take full advantage of the power of the hardware such as Halo Infinite and Forza Horizon 5.
But unlike the best gaming PCs, which can cost thousands of dollars, Microsoft has packed a lot of power into the monolithic frame of the Xbox Series X for only $499 / £449 / AU $749. The end result is a competitively priced and technically advanced console that offers significantly reduced loading times and improved visual fidelity.
The deal is further sweetened by a number of quality-of-life features that enhance your gaming experience, such as Quick Resume and FPS Boost, which we’ll discuss in more detail below. However, while the Xbox Series X’s raw hardware power is undeniable – and its new time-saving features are welcome – it falls short in some key areas.
The Xbox Series X still doesn’t have the same library of must-haves that the PS5 or even the Nintendo Switch can offer, but it does have Xbox Game Pass. It’s a subscription service that gives you access to hundreds of games for a monthly fee – and if you’re someone who likes to play new titles every month in a variety of genres, it’s the best deal in gaming right now.

While Xbox Game Pass is mostly filled with older titles, many have been improved to take advantage of the Xbox Series X hardware, such as Gears 5.

While this is not exactly pocket money, it is the right price for a new Xbox. It’s the same price as the (now discontinued) Xbox One at launch, and also matches the MSRP of the Xbox One X, which has also been discontinued. Neither is anywhere near the Xbox Series X. Given that the Series X has specs similar to a gaming PC, the $500 price tag is pretty steep – you’d be hard-pressed to find a good PC at that price.
However, as mentioned, if you want to get the most out of your Xbox Series X, we recommend that you take out an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription, which costs $15 / £10.99 / AU$15.95 per month (an annual subscription is also available, which reduces the annual cost slightly). Although this is an additional cost, giving you access to hundreds of Xbox Game Pass games (including Bethesda and EA titles), Xbox Live Gold, Xbox Cloud Gaming and monthly free games, it should save you money in the long run compared to buying. A separate game.
If you’re not interested in Game Pass Ultimate, it may be worth opting for a regular Game Pass subscription, which costs ($9.99 / £7.99 / AU10.95). That gives access to the service only on the console (rather than both PC and console) and does not go with cloud gaming on mobile devices.

It’s worth noting that the Xbox Series X is also available through Microsoft’s Xbox All Access subscription service in select regions, including the US, UK and Australia. Xbox All Access bundles the console with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate on a 24-month plan (giving you access after a period) for $34.99 / £28.99 / AU $46 per month, with no upfront costs – that seems like a good deal.
But the Xbox Series X isn’t the only next-generation console, and the PS5 and PS5 Digital, which launched at similar prices, are also worth a look. However, recently we have seen the PS5 get a price increase, with Sony blaming it on rising inflation rates around the world. Fortunately, Xbox won’t be following PlayStation with a price hike, but as it stands, Xbox isn’t ruling out future price increases.
We won’t get into that too much here, but it makes the Xbox Series X a more affordable option right now.
The Xbox Series X’s design is a big departure from its predecessor – the vertical tower design is reminiscent of a gaming desktop, although you can place the console horizontally. Measuring 15.1 x 15 x 30.1 cm and weighing 4.45 kg, the cube-shaped console – all black, except for the green inside the cooling vent on top – is smart and enhances the console’s design.

The front design of the console is quite simple, with the familiar Xbox power button on the top left, the disc drive (and eject button) on the bottom left, and the pairing button and USB 3.2 port on the bottom right (the pairing button also works as an IC receiver). The back of the console has some cooling vents, as well as an HDMI 2.1 output port, two USB 3.2 ports, one network port, a storage expansion slot, and a power input port.
An interesting accessibility feature on the back of the console is that all ports have tactile indicators (small, raised dots) that indicate which port you are touching. For example, a USB 3.2 port has three raised ports, while the input port has only one. This is intended to help access cables and make the console more accessible for the visually impaired.
