The TCL 4K 6-Series with Google TV offers more features and better performance than the Roku-based 6-Series, and all you’ll be giving up is Apple AirPlay.

This review is based on testing on the 55R646, the 55-inch production model. Aside from the difference in screen size, the $1,799.99 75-inch 75R646 is identical in appearance, and we expect it to be the same.

TCL has always impressed us with its 6 Series TVs, which offer powerful performance at affordable prices. These channels only work on the Roku TV platform, which is a very simple and convenient feature, but not very rich. Now TCL offers another option in the form of the Google TV 4K Series 6 TVs. It’s priced the same as the Roku TV 4K 6 Series models (the 55-inch 55R646 we tested for $949.99) and offers powerful software and support for services, Google Cast screen mirroring and hands-free Google Assistant (although they leave Apple AirPlay support included in the Roku TV). And they seem to bring a number of engineering changes over the Roku models, with stronger performance and less lag. The Hisense U8G series is a nice touch, but otherwise, TCL’s Google TV 6 series has the same great features for the same price, earning it our Editors’ Choice award along with the Hisense model.

Since 1982, they’ve tested and evaluated thousands of products to help you make the best buying decisions. See how we try. (Opens in a new window)

Before we continue, it’s worth noting that TCL has temporarily pulled its Google TV models from retail stores following reports of software instability. We didn’t encounter this issue in testing, and now that TCL has released an update for the affected software, it’s also commercially available.

Physically, the Google-based 55R646 is almost identical to the Roku-based 55R635. The screen consists of the same thin strip of polished metal that runs along the sides and top, with the same line at the bottom edge that has the TCL logo in chrome in the middle. It also sits on very similar pistol legs to the V, although it is a bit lower and has nice rubber feet. The biggest clue that this is a Google TV model and not a Roku is the rectangular, dark, cloth-covered screen that sits on the bottom of the TV. This is a remote microphone unit that provides hands-free access to Google Assistant.

Connect the power cable to the left rear of the TV, and all other connections are on the right, facing right. It also includes four HDMI ports (two 4K120, one eARC), two USB ports, a 3.5mm video input, a 3.5mm headphone jack, an optical audio output, an Ethernet port, and an antenna/cable connection. Under the door is a power/input button and remote mic mute switch.

The far end is a long, thin, black rectangle with interesting edges. Near the top is a large round gray panel with the power, settings and Google Assistant buttons above it, along with a pinhole microphone. The menu buttons are below the tile, and below that are dedicated app buttons for Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, TCL Channel, and YouTube. On the right edge of the remote control are the toggle and mute buttons.

While most TCL smart TVs use the Roku TV platform, the 55R646 uses Google TV for its display. Google TV is a modified version of the Android TV platform on Hisense TV, which retains all its features, with a menu that is more focused than controlled by program selection. All the big streaming names are available, including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, Netflix, Twitch and YouTube. Google TV also supports Google Cast for streaming from your Android smartphone or tablet, or the Chrome web browser from your desktop, though it doesn’t support Apple AirPlay like Roku TVs (and Roku TVs don’t support Google Cast).

Google TV also offers access to Google’s voice assistant, which you can use by simply saying “Hey Google” thanks to the remote microphone built into the 55R646. This is a trend that some Hisense and Sony TVs have adopted in the last few years, where speaking from a distance requires the integration of voice support. And, if you don’t like the microphone constantly listening for the alarm, you can easily disable the microphone with the switch on the back.

Google Assistant remains a powerful voice assistant that can answer common questions like weather and sports, search for content to watch, and directly control the TV itself and any smart home device. It can be very useful, especially when using hands-free speech.

The TCL 55R646 is a 4K TV with a 120 Hz refresh rate. It supports High Definition (HDR) content in HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision and Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG).

Like most TVs, the 55R646 has an adaptive feature that tries to adjust the picture quality based on what’s being shown. This option is automatically activated and works on whatever screen you’re using. We recommend turning this off when watching videos to get a more accurate picture of the controller’s aim, and turning it off yourself when running our tests.

Circles represent standard color values. Dots represent measured color levels. The closer each dot is to its nearest square, the more accurate the TV’s color.

The table above shows the color levels of the 55R646 in Movie mode with an SDR signal compared to Rec.709 broadcasts and with an HDR signal compared to DCI-P3 digital cinema standards. The 55R646 does a great job here with accurate whites and consistent colors in SDR and HDR. The SDR image is almost perfect right out of production, with the only (very minor) complaint being that the greens are slightly off and the yellows and magentas are just warm. The HDR picture is very good, covering almost the entire DCI-P3 color space, including green and yellow tones. All colors are well balanced and not skewed in any direction except for cyans which are just slightly green, and blues, magentas, reds and yellows all look good.

Looks good on 55R646. The greens of the plants and the blues of the water look vibrant and natural, with many subtle colors in the colors. Textures like fur and bark look sharp in both sun and shade.

Big Tv Under $1000! Tcl 5 Series Review — Andrew Robinson

It’s equally impressive on the 55R646, with Deadpool’s red suit looking clean and accurate at first glance in the film. The fire in the burning laboratory looks bright and clear, while the same color tone is still visible without being washed out.

Show the big difference 55R646. The cutouts and outlines of the black dresses are clearly visible and still look black even with white balloons, lights and shirts of the same color. Skin tones look natural against black and white, as well as different colors
