The Samsung Galaxy M31 is the natural successor to the Galaxy M30 and Galaxy M30s. It’s a smartphone that doesn’t change much, keeping the features that worked well last time and offering necessary updates in some areas. First of all, Samsung has focused on the cameras as the Galaxy M31 offers a 64 MP quad camera. Other key specs of the Samsung Galaxy M31 include a Super AMOLED display, 6,000mAh battery, and Android 10 software at a starting price of Rs 14,999 in India.

Without changing things too much, the Galaxy M31 looks and feels similar to the Galaxy M30s, which is good and bad. The good thing is that the smartphone offers all the right features to make it a solid smartphone under Rs 15,000. The bad thing is that the design and certain specifications of the Galaxy M31 might not hold up well against some of the other most beautiful and powerful smartphones soon to be introduced in this segment.

As mentioned above, the Samsung Galaxy M31 comes with a familiar design. It looks a lot like the Galaxy M30s in that it has a one-piece plastic panel on the back with a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor and a square-shaped camera module in the upper left corner. While the plastic material helps keep the smartphone lightweight (even though it packs a massive battery), it makes it less attractive compared to glass phones like the Redmi Note 8 Pro (review).
The front of the Samsung Galaxy M31 is also familiar, welcoming you with a 6.4-inch Full HD+ (2340 x 1080) Super AMOLED Infinity-U display, much like its predecessors. The screen has a U-shaped notch at the top that houses the selfie camera, and a rather chunky chin.
The Samsung Galaxy M31 is a chunky phone and it feels light in the hand, so it gets tiring to hold after a while. The smartphone is available in blue, black and red colors. Thanks to its glossy rear panel, the Galaxy M31 is a magnet for fingerprints and smudges, something that’s quite noticeable in the black color variant we received for the review. Also, the back panel attracts scratches if you put it on a table or in your pocket along with a few keys.
The volume and power buttons are located at the top right of the frame, which aren’t always easy to reach with one hand. The bottom of the frame houses the Type-C port, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a single speaker grill. On the left side of the bezel is a card slot that can hold two nano SIM cards and one microSD card.

The screen also offers good levels of brightness, so you won’t have a problem reading the screen in bright sunlight. The FHD+ display is sharp, delivering sharp video content in 1080p resolution. With support for Videvine L1, the Galaxy M31 can stream content on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video in Full HD.
The biggest update to the Galaxy M31 is the cameras. The smartphone sports a 64MP quad camera setup at the back, as opposed to the 48MP triple camera system on the Galaxy M30s. The new setup includes a high-resolution 64MP f/1.8 Samsung GV1 primary sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide lens, a 5MP depth camera, and a 5MP macro lens. The improved setup is more versatile, allowing users more ways to take photos.
The Galaxy M31’s main camera takes decent daytime photos. With Scene Optimizer enabled, the camera uses a lot of software processing to enhance colors, which you may prefer over more natural tones. So if you’re shooting flowers, for example, green will appear greener and pink may turn red. Photos are warmer, which means you won’t be able to capture natural white tones. In general, I found photos taken during the day to lack contrast and dynamic range compared to the Redmi Note 8 Pro in this segment.
The main camera can quickly focus on a subject in daylight, but it gets a bit awkward when the sun goes down. By default, the main camera shoots at a 16-megapixel resolution and uses pixel binning to deliver brighter, sharper photos. You can manually change the aspect ratio to 3:4 64MP to capture high-resolution photos. However, 64MP photos will appear darker, lack HDR support, and should only be used in broad daylight if you want to capture a wide landscape to zoom in on later.

Moving on from the main camera, the 8MP wide-angle Samsung Galaxy M31 manages to capture nice wide-angle shots in daylight. Colors look good, and there’s enough detail, as long as you don’t zoom in and look at the pixels. Portrait mode using Live Focus mode can capture some bokeh shots as long as the blur effect isn’t extreme. Skin tones look warm and soft, but there are good details.
Finally, we have a 5 MP macro camera that can get up to 3 cm closer to the subject. Again, best used in daylight, the macro camera allows you to capture some creative close-ups. Macros can appear clear and detailed as long as the subject is still. However, colors tend to look dull and washed out compared to the natural bokeh that can be captured with the main camera.
The Galaxy M31 is pretty decent at video recording. Both the front and rear cameras can record UHD video. The main camera also supports Super Steady mode, which does a good job of keeping your videos shake-free while shooting handheld.
Samsung has also upgraded the front-facing camera from 16MP to 32MP, meaning selfies will be sharper on the Galaxy M31. While this is true and the selfie camera captures good detail in clothing and hair, it still softens the face even though beauty mode is turned off. The front camera also supports Live Focus, which allows you to adjust the intensity of the bokeh in real time. The greater the bokeh effect, the less natural the subject separation will be.

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy M31 comes with a versatile camera setup that will allow you to capture photos in different perspectives. And while the 64-megapixel quad camera system sounds like a nice upgrade thanks to the added macro lens, it doesn’t feel like the best quad camera setup compared to the competition in this segment.
The Samsung Galaxy M31 is powered by a 2.3GHz Equinox 9611 octa-core chipset based on a 10nm process and equipped with a Mali G72 MP3 GPU. This is the same processor that powered the Galaxy M30s. Samsung has bumped up the base 4GB RAM variant to 6GB RAM, which should provide a smoother multitasking experience. The smartphone comes in 64GB and 128GB variants, which can be expanded up to 512GB via microSD card.
Right out of the box, the Samsung Galaxy M31 was as snappy as you’d expect from a new smartphone. Scrolling through One UI 2.0 was smooth, and apps opened quickly, too. During our week-long use, we encountered no slowdowns or lag when using multiple apps daily for messaging, browsing social media, etc.
The Ekinos 9611 is a decent mid-range processor that can handle everyday tasks with ease. You can also run graphic-intensive games like PUBG at high graphics settings and default frame rates. We played a 30-minute session of PUBG on default settings, which worked without a hitch. On high to extreme graphics settings, we noticed the phone getting warm to the touch while gaming. This didn’t affect the phone’s battery life, though, as a 30-minute session only drained the battery by about 5 percent, which is impressive.

Talking about One UI 2.0 software based on Android 10, it is quite a simple interface and easy to use. In fact, the Galaxy M31 comes with One UI Core instead of One UI, which means some features like Bixby and Bixby Home are missing. You will also not be able to download Samsung Pay from the Play Store. The simplified One UI Core will still feel like One UI, so if you don’t miss Bixby and Samsung Pay too much, you should be happy with what the software has to offer.
The Samsung Galaxy M31 packs a massive 6000 mAh battery, which is unchanged from the Galaxy M30s. It is good to see that Samsung has not reduced the battery level, as this really sets the smartphone apart from most of its rivals in this segment.
