The Sony X690E (KD-70X690E) is large – over 5 feet wide – and offers a huge amount of viewing real estate. As Ultra HD resolution makes viewing on larger displays possible thanks to its higher pixel density, the price of 4K panels has dropped rapidly, making ultra-large TVs more affordable than ever. And that size makes the viewing experience more immersive.

But there’s more to the size of the TV than the X690E, which left us wanting more performance, more smart TV features and a better overall experience.

The 70-inch Sony looks pretty good, with very thin black bezels around the display and a modest design. The TV’s chassis has a glossy, black finish around the bezel and a flat black finish on the back. It’s all black plastic which is serviceable but not high end.

At a whopping 70 inches (measured diagonally, corner to corner), the X690E is the largest TV we’ve brought into our labs, along with the 65-inch Vizio SmartCast M-Series M65-E0 and the 65-inch Samsung MU7000.

But this brings its challenges. At 61.7 x 35.5 x 3.7 inches, the 70-inch X690E isn’t going anywhere. Wall mounting is an option — the TV supports a 400 x 400 millimeter VESA mount — but if you want to place it on an entertainment unit or table, you’ll need to make sure you have the necessary space.

The included stand is made of sturdy black plastic with a matte finish and has a U-shaped footprint with a square design that measures 25 inches wide by 12 inches deep. It’s small enough to fit a regular entertainment unit, but you’ll need to make sure there’s enough room on either side to accommodate a 62-inch widescreen TV.

You’ll also want to make sure you have room for comfortable viewing, as such a large TV can take over a smaller apartment or living room and make you feel like you’re sitting in the front row of a movie theater. The more affordable of the two is mounted about 8-10 inches from the edge of the display and has two HDMI ports (one with ARC), an RF connector for the antenna, and three USB ports.

Another rear panel on the back has a third HDMI port, composite video and Ethernet connections for networking. The set also has built-in 802.11ac Wi-Fi, which allows you to connect your smart TV online without a cable connection.

The X690E’s decent enough picture quality doesn’t quite live up to what you’d expect for a cinema-like display. Colors are crisp and bright, but also oversaturated and a bit washed out. Overall, color reproduction is not as bright due to the slightly lower color gamut.

A closer look at the performance showed realistic skin tones in movies like Arrival, where most of the film is on human faces. Whether it was Amy Adams or Forest Whitaker on screen, the faces looked sharp and vibrant.

Interestingly, the X690E only has three main display settings: Standard, Vivid and Custom. Additional modes such as Cinema and Game modes are available, but they are located in a separate menu in the settings called “Scene Selection”.

Most TVs have poor color accuracy in Standard mode, but offer much better accuracy in Cinema mode. In the X690E’s case, however, performance was best in Standard mode, with a Delta-E score of 8.2 (closer to zero). It’s not really extreme for this mode; The Vizio M65-E0 had a Delta-E of 10.4 at similar settings, while the Sony XBR-X900E registered 8.7. However, these two sets had much better numbers in different display modes (1.4 and 2.1 respectively).

Color gamut, on the other hand, is good but not great, with the X690E producing 99.2 percent of the Rec 709 color space. While other sets are ahead with higher percentages—the 65-inch Samsung MU7000 scores 99.8, and the Vizio M65-E0 – 100 – this is still high enough to be acceptable.

Viewing angles are very wide, with a slight color shift occurring at about 45 degrees from the center, which isn’t bad. Smaller panels like the 55-inch Samsung MU6300 are large enough to cause color shift even if you don’t change the viewing angle, but the 70-inch Sony doesn’t.

The low-light environment was dark enough, but not so black that shadowy scenes were hard to see. For example, the shadow alley in Deadpool was dark, but details like the bricks on the wall and the small touches on the characters’ costumes were still clearly visible. In contrast, most OLED displays offer the deepest blacks available in a display, but often crush blacks in shadow images, leaving blurry details and near-black elements that are hard to distinguish. There are some shadows in the corners of the panel in the backlight. But they are so small, I expected them to be worse.

Sound quality on the X690E was excellent thanks to the 10-watt speakers. Whether we were watching The Price is Right or the Avengers: Infinity War trailer, the overall volume was strong and easily filled our test lab.

When listening to Deadmau5’s “Seeya,” clarity was excellent, with perfect performance between 20 and 70 percent. In this range, bass levels were as good as you can get without a subwoofer, and highs were crisp and clear, with Collin D’Agostino’s vocals coming through without any distortion.

Anything above 70 percent starts to sound distorted. Bass lost its punch, vocals sounded thin and distant, and when pushed to 85 percent, the TV’s chassis made a bit of noise.

The X690E’s menus are fairly opaque, and while basic picture mode and brightness settings are easy to find, other settings are not. We’ve already mentioned the difficulty of finding the various picture modes, where some modes are available directly in the display settings, while others – including Cinema, Game and Sports modes – require you to find a separate settings menu with the confusing name of Scene Select. . But this is far from the only cause of confusion or irritation in the menus.

For example, to turn HDR on and off, you first had to go into the settings for each HDMI port and then enable HDR input from an external device. If you don’t enable this feature first, you can only receive HDR content from streaming sources, even if you have an HDR-enabled PlayStation 4 Pro from Sony. It’s a very complex way of dealing with one of the main selling points of the kit.

Compared to the Android TV options offered on Sony’s other Bravia sets, this smart TV’s Opera operating system is a real disappointment.

Then there is the choice of smart TV platform. This model line uses the Sony Internet TV platform, which is a very simple name for a smart TV platform with a custom operating shell. Compared to the Android TV options offered in Sony’s other bundles, this is a real disappointment. You can use the tiled icon layout, but you have to go through Opera TV first to get additional apps.

The choice of applications is not large. While the TV comes pre-installed with popular apps like Amazon Video, Crackle, Hulu, Netflix and YouTube, you’ll be hard-pressed to find other apps you’d expect. The quality of the selection drops dramatically, and you quickly find yourself looking at apps more suited to YouTube, including public domain movies, foreign language content, and amateur comedy shows. You know the networks and studios have no basic viewing options at all.

Opera boasts some gaming content, but it also lacks options. Notable apps advertised in Opera’s app selector include games like Rock Swapper and Pentominoes — cheap knockoffs of Bejeweled and Tetris, respectively.
