There are many Redmi Note smartphones this year. Redmi Note 9 Pro gives you a great looking budget smartphone with a powerful camera and great battery life. The Redmi Note 9 Pro Max “maximizes” things by offering features that not every budget buyer would desire, such as a 64 MP rear camera, 32 MP selfie camera, and 33W fast charging. But if you are willing to spend a little more they are good to have. Then we have the phone that started it all and it should be a better deal than other budget smartphones, the base Note 9.

For years, the standard Note model was based on the tried and tested Xiaomi formula of giving you the best hardware around 10K. Starting with the Note 5, Xiaomi expanded the Note series to two smartphones: a standard model and a new “Pro” model that gives you the extra hardware to enable it all. With the Note 8 Pro, Xiaomi gained popularity, offering buyers a capable smartphone with the MediaTek G90T, a gaming beast that gives you a great camera, and looks great. With the Snapdragon 720G, the Note 9 Pro and Note 9 Pro Max continue that tradition. So how did the Base Note 9 fare?

This year, Xiaomi uses a gaming-grade MediaTek Helio G85 chipset, and the device I reviewed came with 6 GB of RAM. A step down (or two) from the G90T, I had high hopes, but it simply refuses to deliver. Thankfully, there are other uses for this basic note.
My favorite thing about this phone is the battery life. The Note 9’s built-in 5,020 mAh battery, with Xiaomi’s battery optimization, can easily last a day and a half on a single charge, including a few games, photos, tons of messages, emails and more. Add in an hour or two of gaming time (which you probably won’t), and you can get that number up to a decent day (24 hours) while still having some battery life left. That is pretty impressive.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro Review
Just because it’s a budget smartphone doesn’t mean it should come with a cheap charger. In theory, the phone comes with fairly fast 22W charging, which is actually a better deal than the more expensive Redmi Note 9 Pro, which includes an 18W charger in the box. While 22W charging sounds interesting, you have to remember that it must have a massive 5,020mAh battery. Long story short, charging the phone from 0% to 100% took about 2 hours and 20 minutes — not bad — but about the same speed as the Note 9 Pro’s 18W charge. As it turns out, the phone needs a software update to use the 22W charger. So, till the update comes, you will be charging this phone at 18W. The good thing is that once you charge it, you don’t have to worry about the battery.
It’s a cheap phone made entirely of plastic, but the design of this Redmi Note is really impressive. The unibody polycarbonate shell really holds the phone together, and handling around the ports, corners, and even the display is perfect.
When I unbox the phone, I spend a lot of time admiring the Aura Balance design, which feels great in the hand and feels even lighter than a glass phone. Of course, I still prefer the Redmi Note 8 with a glass back, but being made of plastic also means it won’t break like glass. But it still scratches.
I also like how seamless the transition feels from the circular rear panel to the side frames, because instead of two pieces, it’s one piece that looks like two.
Redmi Note 9 Pro Review: Living Up To The Legend
I honestly felt that more phones should be made like this until the day went by and I realized how difficult it was to keep this shiny plastic body clean. It picks up a lot of dust, lint, smudges, and needs cleaning every time you pick it up, unless you cover the glossy enamel-like texture with a matte case.
While clicking photos, they may appear oversaturated due to the display. So you might look twice through your camera’s viewfinder to see the flowers in your garden, the sunset on the beach, or the color of a friend’s t-shirt that looks a little different than the real thing. Don’t worry, this is what they look like on your phone.

Image detail quality is about average. They look very sharp and can handle a good amount of detail in the right lighting. Unfortunately, even with clouds overhead, noise can get in. Despite the automatic HDR mode, there’s still a lot of clipping of highlights, whether shooting indoors or shooting outdoors at sunset. It also works in low-light scenes, where I prefer photos taken in auto mode over photos taken with night mode, which actually makes them brighter.
Redmi Note 9 Pro Max Review: The Note Pro, Maxed Out?
Whether I used the rear or front camera, portraits came out very well, with surprisingly good edge detection and sharp images. The background gets overexposed, but the camera always makes sure the subject is properly exposed.
The video is a bit disappointing. The camera maxes out at 1080p 30fps, with the only option being to shoot in 720p, also at 30fps. Software stability is solid, but details are lacking, even for a budget smartphone.
It’s a regular 60Hz LCD display covered in Gorilla Glass 5, but it’s much better than my strained experience with the Poco M2 Pro. Like the other brothers, it also has a punch hole display with FHD+ resolution, but I honestly don’t like the display even if you choose any color scheme in Settings > Display > Color scheme degree of oversaturation.
Given that this is in the budget smartphone category, this bright color display may appeal to some. But when you look at the photos on it there is a problem because the colors are not correct. Surprisingly, despite the usual amount of pre-installed bloatware on smartphones, I didn’t get any ads or promotional notifications. But the launch of the video app brought a lot of interesting content. The phone on the box advertises its Google apps. It comes with those apps, but it won’t replace your dialer and messaging apps like the Mi 10 did. This also means that most of the apps on your home screen will have duplicates.
When you first boot, you’ll get an “agree to continue” message almost every second to open a Xiaomi app (including clock, calculator). So be careful what you agree to, because the “Cleaner” app will send your data to Clean Master’s servers (which the app already does).
Despite having a Helio G85 chipset and 6GB of RAM, the phone crashes surprisingly occasionally when scrolling through the Google feed (swipe right from the home screen), opening the “recent” menu, and minimizing apps. and gets stuck. Which brings us to acting.

Apart from not being fully optimized for MIUI, the most disappointing part is the gaming part. Thanks to the MediaTek gaming-grade chipset inside, I expect the phone to run popular games at default settings. Sadly, this is not the case.
