There’s no substitute for size when it comes to home theater. After all, the whole point of ‘home cinema’ is to bring the cinema home. And what is the most important part of the cinema experience? Of course, the big screen. That’s why a 65-inch (or even bigger!) TV is your go-to if you want to add some serious cinema style to your living room.
But we can’t be great and go to the top. Your budget may reach a 65-inch TV, but it may not be the flagship 65-inch OLED or QLED. If so, the Sony XR-65X90J (or the nearly identical XR-65X94J) might be just what you’re looking for thanks to its mix of stylish features, picture-perfect performance and a reasonable price.
The Sony XR-65X90J was originally priced at £1799 / $1500 / AU$2495, but has now dropped to £1499 / $1400 / AU$2295.
In the UK, there is a variant of the X90J called X94J. This version has slightly different feet and a feature called Rich Color Enhancer. Although Sony says the latter can only be used when set in Vivid mode, we tested both models and found that there’s plenty of extra richness in the X94J’s color mode, but too. it’s so small that it’s not a compelling reason to choose one version over another. Both are the same, so this review applies to the X90J and X94J.

With non-stick feet, the X90J and X94J are identical, more or less what you’d expect from a big-screen LCD TV. The pure black bezels around the screen are 1cm thick on the top and sides and about 2cm on the bottom. At 7.2 cm deep, the chassis is chunky by modern standards, but not overly bulky.
Both versions of the TV have legs instead of stands. The X90J has what Sony calls a ‘Slim Blade Stand’, while the X94J has an ‘Aluminum Blade Stand’. In the real world, the X94J’s legs are slightly narrower than those of the X90J, and in the narrowest of the two-seat selection, the legs are just 89cm. The X90J’s legs can be positioned in different lines on the bottom edge, and the narrowest configuration provides footprint for a TV as wide as 48cm.
The X90J/X94J come with the same remote as the A80J OLED. It’s very useful, with a decent layout and popular shortcuts for four of the most popular streaming services, but there are springy buttons that you don’t get from the more premium version with the A90J.
The X90J/X94J have very robust physical connection options that include aerial, satellite (Freesat in the UK), ethernet and optical ports, plus three USB and four HDMI.

Of these HDMI ports, two are standard HDMI 2.0 specifications, while two are HDMI 2.1 48Gbps ports. Unfortunately, like Sony’s other 2021 HDMI 2.1 TVs, there’s no direct support for VRR (Variable Refresh Rate). Sony promises to add it before the end of 2021, and the latest VRR update of the 2020 XH90 (X900H in the US) gives us confidence that this will indeed be the case.
4K at 120Hz is supported out of the box and works as expected, which was not the case when we tested the OLED A80J and A90J. However, you can’t have 4K/120Hz with Dolby Vision, like if you’re using an LG OLED like the C1, but you might want to ditch Dolby Vision gaming, like the X90J. The /X94J doesn’t have a Dolby Vision Game mode, so games played in Dolby Vision suffer greatly from the input. In short, it’s not the ideal TV for hardcore Xbox Series X players, but it’s a great foil for PS5 users – even HGiG’s position goes beyond that.
It’s also worth noting that, as usual on 2021 TVs with two HDMI 2.1 sockets, one of the HDMI 2.1 inputs on the Sony X90J / X94J is also an eARC / ARC output, so if you need to use eARC / ARC, you can get sound. to an AV receiver or amplifier, you will get the maximum input. For now, this will only be an issue for the lucky few with next-gen consoles (and/or high-end gaming PCs), but it could become an even bigger problem if HDMI 2.1 sources become more common. spread out.
Physical connections aside, the X90J/X94J has a large selection of content for those who don’t have a separate source, thanks to the Google TV operating system. Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, and Apple TV come in all of their 4K, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos glory; Plex and VLC make it easy to play back archived content; and Spotify, Tidal, Amazon Music, and Deezer provide many options for streaming music.

A nice added benefit for those who buy a Sony XR series TV is the built-in Bravia Core app, which streams blockbuster movies at a higher bitrate than other apps and is similar to a 4K Blu-ray disc. You need a very fast connection (at least 115Mbps) to achieve the highest levels of quality, but the pictures were amazing on our 80Mbps connection and you’ll get more than adequate quality from a 10Mbps connection or more. Even if there are IMAX Enhanced movies in your library, you still have to manually select the IMAX Enhanced preset to watch them properly. As with the OLED A90J and A80J, when you buy the X90J/X94J you get a token that can be used to ‘buy’ movies via the app’s library, so there’s really no reason not to give it a try.
UK users will find native apps for Now, BT Sport and My5, but BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub and All 4 are all missing. It’s pretty ugly, of course, but you can at least use your Chromecast to cast content from these apps on your phone to your TV screen.
Coordinating the entire user experience, from navigating the OS and opening apps to all of the image processing and audio processing, is Sony’s new Cognitive Processor XR chip. In fact, the X90J/X94J are the cheapest models in Sony’s lineup to get new silicon. The company says that the Cognitive Processor XR combines the AI capabilities of its predecessor (the X1 chip) with a system called cognitive intelligence. While AI analyzes images and audio and uses data based on machine learning, intelligence aims to add more human insights to identify content and improve AV performance and deliver experiences according to human perception and hearing of the world.
This may sound like hot air, but the superior performance of the OLED A80J and A90J shows that Sony is really up to something here.

In Dolby Vision, of course this widescreen TV can’t match its OLED counterpart for black depth, but we weren’t expecting it at all. Dark scenes are vivid and may lack the depth of black OLED (or higher QLED), with composition only available in dark browns, but backgrounds are stable, without the clouds or smudges typical of large TVs at this price. region. You get a bit of light in the black bars at the top and bottom as you get close to very bright components, but it’s barely noticeable unless you’re looking for it.
General contradictions are also presented here. The bag may not be completely black, but it is very bright, and scenes with a mix of dark and light look great. The character’s helmet-mounted torch is bright and clear in the darkness of the disengaged ship, and the red and orange LEDs in the cockpit as the power slowly returns are bright and vibrant.
The color is great all over. It’s a warm, rich cinematic presentation that’s in line with the Dolby Vision ethos, but the whites are kept clean and detailed. The skin tones are also fantastic, with shades that are rare in these end markets.
Spend a little more and you’ll get a better three-dimensional display, but the X90J looks much better. The edges are sharper, there’s no hint of overkill, and the level of detail is exemplary for a TV this big.
