Despite what Samsung would have you believe, the Galaxy series doesn’t begin and end with the S and Note lines. Samsung’s flagships may get all the attention, but you can’t become the biggest smartphone maker on the planet by ignoring those who don’t have the best chunk of cash for the latest phone.

That’s where the Samsung Galaxy A50 comes in, and it’s impressive. At first glance, it looks like the Galaxy S10, but inside it offers a significantly faster experience without exceeding the performance charts. It’s an absolute steal at £310 and worth serious consideration if the S and Note ranges are too expensive for you.

The Galaxy A series is very, very confusing. What you really need to know is that the Galaxy A50 is currently the second best in the line behind the A70. It will soon be the third when the A80 is unveiled later this month. This makes it better than the A10, A20e and A40, roughly speaking.
Basically, this means a 6.4-inch device that looks like the Samsung Galaxy S10, but with a slimmed down inside. The 2.3GHz octa-core Exynos 9610 processor that powers the phone is almost identical to the Snapdragon 675 processor that powers the Galaxy A70. The phone also supports 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.
Impressively, for this price, the Samsung Galaxy A50 packs three cameras on the back with a depth sensor and a 25-megapixel primary camera with an ultra-wide lens. The A50 also sports a regular Samsung Super AMOLED screen, which is impressive when competitors in this price range often have cheap IPS displays. Doubly so when it also includes an in-display fingerprint reader.
So what’s the harm? Well, a very reasonable £310. In fact, it’s significantly cheaper than many of Samsung’s other smartphone offerings, so its closest competition comes from other manufacturers.

First up is our favorite mid-range smartphone, the Google Pixel 3a. A pared-down version of Google’s flagship, this version is slightly slower, less impressive and has lost some features to £399, but already retails for around £350. Similarly, the P30 Lite is a stripped down version of the Huawei P30 series and retails for £329.
In addition, there is Xiaomi’s mid-range clothing flagship Pocophone F1. It’s a phone that manages to cost just £329 despite having Qualcomm’s fastest mobile processor of 2018. Finally, there’s the Nokia 8.1, which started at £380 but has recently become much cheaper.
It’s pretty strong competition, but the Samsung Galaxy A50 is off to a great start, which is a big challenge for the Galaxy S10. This means that there is practically no bezel, although this version brings back the notch for the front-facing camera. But here it is more of a notch – a small indentation at the top of the phone.
Like the S10, there’s a very small chin on the bottom of the phone, but it’s only noticeable because the other sides don’t have a bezel. The back is slightly curved, and it’s plastic rather than glass, which should make it a bit sturdier. It’s still the type of phone you want to protect in some way.

What is most interesting for a phone of this price, the fingerprint reader is built into the screen, that is, it is not visible on the phone. Just tap the screen down with your thumb and the phone unlocks – maybe a little slower than a regular phone, but still a nice feature for the price.
In terms of other features, as always, Samsung does a very good job. Expandable storage? Check: microSD cards up to 512GB are supported. A headphone jack? Current and accurate. Two SIM cards? yes sir The two downsides I can find are that it’s not waterproof and doesn’t support wireless charging, but you can’t have everything at this price.
What Samsung is known for in its phones is the quality of its displays. And that Super AMOLED screen doesn’t disappoint – this time it’s a 6.4-inch panel with a resolution of 2340 x 1080.
The screen displays 100% of the sRGB spectrum, and in the native color mode of the screen, the colors are really very accurate. The other modes – Photo, Movie and Adaptive – are a bit brighter, but you can’t say you don’t have a choice.

With that exception: the £329 Xiaomi Pocophone F1 is on par with everyone else in this price range. It’s no surprise that it uses the same chip as the Samsung Galaxy S9 in the US last year, but it’s pretty clear what you should do if you want to get the most bang for your buck.
It’s a similar story when it comes to graphical grunt, though the Galaxy A50 fares slightly worse here, trailing the Snapdragon-powered Pixel 3a and the Nokia 8.1. Of course, the Pocophone F1 is an even more obvious winner.
But the Samsung Galaxy A50 has one important feature up its sleeve, and that’s battery life. Our video wasn’t long enough to capture it all, so it took a second spin, lasting 21 hours and 21 minutes, before the 4,000mAh cell finally shut down. Only the Galaxy A70’s extra 500mAh beats it, where it lasted 25 hours and 22 minutes.
The Samsung Galaxy A50 gives us not one, not two, but three cameras on the back. The primary 25-megapixel camera with f/1.7 aperture is supported by an ultra-wide 8-megapixel shooter and a five-megapixel depth sensor with f/2.2 aperture. It would be nice to have a telephoto zoom for one of these, but I’m probably asking for the moon on a stick given the generous specs provided for the price.

That makes it a pretty good matchup with the £329 Huawei P30 Lite’s three cameras (48-megapixel, f/1.8, eight-megapixel wide-angle lens and two-megapixel depth sensor). And while the shots taken by the Samsung Galaxy A50 look great from a distance, when you zoom in, it’s clear that the Huawei P30 Lite has the upper hand.
Which is not to say that the Galaxy A50 is bad by any means. And given Android’s uncertain future, you can understand that a little loss of loyalty is a price worth paying.
When shooting indoors in low light, the cameras are more evenly matched, both delivering detailed images, accurate colors and very little noise. Good work, both, although Huawei once again got a slight edge.
For video, the Galaxy A50 is capable of shooting in Full HD format at 30 frames per second. If you want 4K or 60fps (not both at the same time, mind you), you’ll need to drop an extra £60 on the Galaxy A70. That said, video quality is excellent, and image stabilization seems solid enough for shaky hands.

The front-facing selfie camera also deserves some praise. It is 25-megapixel with f/2.0 aperture. It can be overkill for Skype calls and selfies, and even with Beauty Mode turned off, Samsung still insists on smoothing out all your wrinkles and giving you a weird, alien glow in the Samsung Camera app.
For some, this can be considered a plus, but those who abuse Instagram-modes of smartphone beauty can be warned: you will not fool anyone.
Still, if you can tell there’s something wrong with the Galaxy A50, Samsung is doing something right. Quite right, actually.
For £310 you get a very impressive smartphone that looks great, has a great screen, is fast enough for most people and takes great photos. This is a phone that will suffice for most people.
