Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5g Review: Lab Tests
The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra leads the best Android phones in 2021. It has all the features you could want in a phone, especially if you prefer big screens. Although it lags behind some other high-end competitors, it is still a very good device for all Android fans.
For $1,199 – or $100 more than the iPhone 13 Pro Max – you get a dynamic 6.8-inch screen and dual telephoto lenses for insane zoom power. In addition, the S21 Ultra supports the S Pen, a first for the Galaxy S series.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra comes in a slimmer design and offers faster performance from the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chip. And, unlike the regular Galaxy S21, you don’t have to make nearly as many compromises. You get a better 108MP main camera, a glass back (instead of plastic), more RAM and a higher resolution screen.

Still, at the time of our review of the Galaxy S21 Ultra, it was one of the best phones you can buy for those willing to pay a premium, and one of the best Android phones overall.
The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is harder to find these days – Samsung no longer offers it. You can still find it at other retailers and carriers, but make sure you pay less than the original price of $1,199, because you’ll get the newest Galaxy S22 Ultra. As of this writing, Best Buy is selling the Galaxy S21 Ultra version for $849, while unlocked versions can be found on Amazon for $750. Buying a refurbished Galaxy S21 Ultra could lower the price even more.
The entry-level S21 Ultra includes 12GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. You can also upgrade to 256GB of storage and to a model with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. The 256GB model cost $1,249 – basically $50 more – and you’d pay $1,379 for the 512GB Galaxy S21 Ultra. In the UK, the Galaxy S21 Ultra was priced at £1,149 for the base model with 12GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. That price rises to £1,199 for the 256GB phone and reaches £1,329 for the 16GB and 512GB model.
The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is a monolith of a phone. Yes, the contour-cut camera design blends the camera bump into the glass back, but this is still a massive device that you’ll want to use with two hands. We recognized it as the best designed device in our Tom’s Guide 2021 Awards for phones.
With its 0.35-inch profile and 8.08-ounce weight, the S21 Ultra is thicker and heavier than the iPhone 12 Pro Max. The screen is slightly curved, unlike the Galaxy S21 which is completely flat and regular, but it’s not annoying. I’ve never accidentally touched something on the screen like I did with last year’s Ultra.
The Galaxy S21 Ultra only comes in two colors from the manufacturer: Phantom Black and Phantom Silver. I could go with black for its slimming effect. Samsung.com offers exclusive S21 Ultra colors, including Phantom Navy, Phantom Titanium, and Phantom Brown. A navy blue color is also exclusive to Best Buy.

One of my favorite design upgrades is the 1.7x larger fingerprint sensor. It makes unlocking the phone easy, and I found that the S21 Ultra didn’t ask me to press the sensor again like previous phones.
The 6.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED display on the Galaxy S21 Ultra is simply one of the best displays on a phone. It’s bright, vibrant, and doesn’t force you to choose between the highest resolution and the highest refresh rate like its predecessor.
Yes, you will be mesmerized when you watch videos on this phablet. Colors are as rich as ever and viewing angles are nice and wide when watching Netflix.
But the Ultra beats the iPhone with its dynamic refresh rate. Not only do you get super smooth scrolling and gaming, you now get 120Hz resolution and quad HD at the same time. So you don’t have to choose between the highest resolution and the highest refresh rate.
Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra Vs Galaxy S21 Ultra
The S21 Ultra is also smart enough to automatically select refresh rates of up to 10Hz to help save power.
In more good news, the S21 Ultra’s screen is easy to read outdoors, as it can reach a maximum brightness of 1500 nits. In our test, the S21 Ultra averaged 821 nits, better than the iPhone 12 Pro Max’s 654 nits.
The S21 Ultra’s display was quite colorful in our lab tests, with the panel producing 81.4% of the demanding DCI-P3 color gamut, compared to 84.8% for the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
Colors on the iPhone were slightly more accurate, and its display achieved a Delta-E score of 0.07, compared to 0.35 for the Galaxy S21 Ultra.

Samsung says the S21 Ultra has a contrast ratio of 3 million:1, which is 50% higher than the S20 Ultra. And there’s the Eye Comfort Shield feature, designed to reduce eye fatigue by limiting blue light.
Here are the cameras that stand out the most in the Galaxy S21 Ultra compared to the S21 and S21 Plus. There is a 108MP main sensor and a 12MP ultra-wide camera, which is complemented by a laser sensor for autofocus.
But now that the Galaxy S22 is the new kid on the block, Samsung has announced that it’s bringing some of that phone’s camera features to the Galaxy S21 Ultra, like night portraits with a telephoto lens.

Is Samsung Faking Moon Photos With Galaxy S21 Ultra’s 100x Space Zoom?
The Galaxy S21 Ultra will make you feel like a secret agent as you zoom in. While the iPhone 12 Pro Max is stuck at 2.5x optical zoom, the S21 Ultra has two telephoto lenses with 3x and 10x optical zoom.
I was surprised at how close I got to this sign across the highway. At 100x zoom it’s shaky, but the new Zoom Lock feature can help you get a more stable shot with just one tap.
The main 108 MP camera can capture 12-bit HDR photos with 64 times richer color detail and more than three times the dynamic range of the S20 Ultra. Additionally, there is an option for a 12-bit RAW file in Pro mode.
I tested the camera at a nearby grocery store to capture produce, and the green peppers in the foreground look amazing and delicious. And you can see incredible detail when you zoom in. However, in comparison, the iPhone 12 Pro Max shot looks even more vivid.
Galaxy S21 Drop Test: Samsung’s Newest Phones Didn’t Last Long
The Galaxy S21 Ultra is also a great companion when you’re out and about. Take this photo of tall trees I took in a nearby park. You can make out fine detail in the bark, and the phone does a great job of capturing the clouds in the blue sky even while dealing with all the shadows in the foreground. I prefer the S21 Ultra photo in this case to the iPhone 12 Pro Max, but it’s really close.
Samsung says it has also improved Portrait Mode on the S21 by using AI to better separate the subject from the background. The S21 Ultra delivers a stunning bokeh effect here. My skin tone is warmer on the iPhone 12 pro Max, but overall the S21 shot looks great.
The Galaxy S21 Ultra also performs well in low light, thanks to a faster Bright Night sensor and 12MP non-detachable technology to reduce noise reduction. In this comparison, you can see more rocks and bushes in the foreground on the S21 Ultra. photo compared to the iPhone 12 Pro Max, although the colors of the iPhone look more natural.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max thrives on this photo of a golden retriever. The S21 Ultra’s image is too bright and a bit washed out, while the fur on the iPhone looks more golden and natural.
