The Samsung QN85A brings Mini-LED technology to a real price with very few compromises. There are minor issues with it, but the sheer image quality you get for the price completely wins me over. The super-slim design and class-leading smart TV software don’t hurt either.

In this Samsung QN85A review, we take a look at the most affordable TV in Samsung’s 2021 range which includes a next-generation Mini-LED panel (or, as Samsung’s marketing department would prefer, a ‘Neo QLED’ panel). And that’s exciting, because the high-end Neo QLED TVs we tested – the Samsung QN95A and Samsung QN900A – are truly exceptional, at the top of our list of the best TVs… but their prices are high.
Can the Samsung QN85A deliver the same Mini-LED magic at a more affordable price? Yes, it can – in fact, it’s the TV in this price range that I’d choose, even over some of the best OLED TVs. It delivers incredibly bright images that also manage to be nuanced and subtle, while Mini-LED technology offers more precise backlight dimming for better contrast than other LED TVs at this price.
The price is still not what you’d describe as “entry-level”, but the Samsung QN85A is well-specified (HDR10+, HDMI 2.1 compatibility and the exemplary Tizen smart TV interface are among the highlights) and good-looking (especially where the only 27mm chassis depth is concerned) . We have a few minor gripes, but overall they pale in comparison to the visual value for money you get here.

We tested the 55-inch version for this Samsung QN85A review, so let’s get into why it impressed us so much and what you need to know.
The Samsung QN85A was released in early summer 2021 and is available in the 55-inch version we reviewed here, as well as 65-inch, 75-inch, and 85-inch sizes.
The 55-inch 55QN85A is officially priced at £1,499 / $1,599 / AU$2,499, which is quite affordable by the standards of the young Mini-LED technology, but still puts it in direct competition with some of the best OLED TVs from t .ex. LG and Sony.
The big thing that’s new here compared to last year’s Samsung Q80T is the technology driving the panel here, so shall we start there?
Samsung Reveals Prices Of Its 2023 4k And 8k Qled Smart Tvs
Mini LED used – hello! – very small LEDs to illuminate the LCD panel. Reducing the size and increasing the number of LEDs means many more dimming zones than were previously possible from an LED/LCD screen – in a 55-inch screen like this there are more than 500 individual zones.
So, at least in theory, there’s much better backlight control and targeting, which should mean better blacks and greater backlight precision. There’s sure to be impressive brightness levels from this arrangement too – the 55-inch QN85A’s top figure of 1,500 nits will be the envy of any comparable OLED alternative, as they’ll only reach about half as much.
The QN85A uses an IPS panel, which is your classic double-edged sword. On the plus side, it should provide good wide viewing angles, but IPS panels are also quite reflective.
In terms of connectivity, Samsung has dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.2 reception on board. Physical inputs extend to four HDMI sockets, one of which includes all the HDMI 2.1 features necessary for a full next-gen gaming console experience, and another that has eARC compatibility), a pair of USB inputs, an Ethernet socket and antennas for a pair of built-in TV tuners. There is also a digital optical output for use with older soundbars.

The overall show is powered by Samsung’s 4K Neo Quantum Processor, and it can handle HLG, HDR10 and HDR10+ dynamic metadata HDR standards. This being Samsung, of course, there is no capacity to handle Dolby Vision HDR – and the fact that Samsung keeps abandoning it means we have to keep the company doing this.
We’re getting used to what Mini-LED technology can bring to the LCD experience, but we’re still not blasé about it. Give the QN85A the best stuff to work with and it can deliver deeply impressive results.
Some 4K HDR10+ content is what’s “top game” when it comes to this Samsung, and its backlight control, black levels and overall contrast (all of which are parts of picture performance that’s mostly thanks to the Mini-LED) are immediately noticeable. By current LCD panel standards, blacks are impressively deep and richly detailed – there’s plenty of variety here, and while absolute black on an OLED screen eludes the QN85A, it certainly comes a lot closer than you’d expect.

The precision of the backlight means that even fine white text on a black background is stable and controlled, with negligible blooming or haloing, and thanks to white tones that are as varied and detailed as their black counterparts (plus spotty brights when needed). the contrasts are also very wide.
Elsewhere, the news is almost as good. The color palette it draws from is extraordinarily extensive – there really seems to be no limit to the shade of hue the QN85A can deliver. And it’s also completely convincing when it comes to skin tones and textures – the subtlety of complexions of all kinds is on full display here.
Of course, none of this is achieved by simply taking the Samsung out of the box and turning it on. But it doesn’t take too much digging into the QN85A’s settings menus to get vibrant, detailed and vibrant images – in fact, just switch to ‘adaptive picture’ mode and you’re almost all the way there.
About the only area where Samsung is anything less than rock-solid is in its motion-handling performance – and even then, when you’re looking at native 4K content, its efforts are few and far between. The most tested, complex movement on the screen can sometimes provoke the QN85A to reveal how much processing work it is going through, but these events are rare.

As an upscaler of Full HD content, Samsung handles both movies and games with confidence. You’ll never be fooled into thinking you’re seeing native 4K stuff, but you’ll also never find much to complain about when Samsung fills out its massive pixel count. There is of course a slight drop in detail levels, and a slight reduction in the width of the available color palette. But edges remain decently tight, contrasts remain pleasantly wide, and smooth motion handling remains well-gripped.
Ask more about the QN85A when it comes to upscaling, but things take a turn for the worse. Samsung just doesn’t seem to have what it takes to make really low specs (like a 720×480 DVD, for example) look anything but rough and noisy.
It’s obviously a big ask to scale up less than half a million pixels’ worth of information to a screen comfortably over 8m pixels, yet there are quite a few comparably priced screens that don’t quite hold their noses. basically – you might want to take a look at the LG C1 or the Sony X90J.
The performance comes down to earth with a bit of a thump as chatter turns to noise. Samsung equipped the 55-inch QN85A with four full-rage drivers (two at the bottom of the screen, two at the top), fed them a total of 60 watts, and used its object-tracking sound algorithms to try to track sound movement on the screen. In practice, however, the QN85A is an overwhelming listen.

To its credit, it’s never harsh or rude – even at volume, and it’ll get pretty loud by current standards – but the sound it makes is inconsequential and therefore quite at odds with the photos it produces.
