On paper, there aren’t any major changes compared to its predecessor, but the S21 Ultra is said to be significantly better, with less teething problems than the S20 Ultra in day-to-day life. Especially regarding the built-in ExynosProcessor, battery life and camera. Along these lines we will now clarify the question whether Samsung can overcome the weaknesses of the predecessor and whether the S21 Ultra is the best smartphone in the market now.

Samsung’s ultra smartphones were characterized from the beginning by their huge dimensions and were very difficult to use with one hand. Same with the Galaxy S21 Ultra. The smartphone measures an impressive 165, 1 x 75, 6 x 8, 9 mm and weighs 227 grams, making it 5 grams heavier than its predecessor. Despite the slight weight difference, the S21 Ultra somehow feels a bit lighter and more balanced. With the S20 Ultra, I still feel like the device will fall out of my hands due to the top-heavy weight distribution. Samsung has finally put an end to this criticism of its predecessor, which is not to say that the S21 Ultra is a lightweight smartphone. I would advise everyone to hold the device in their hands before buying it. If you like big, heavy and thick smartphones, you will get your money’s worth here. Personally, it would be a little too much for me and I often found it difficult to use the device with one hand.

The front is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, the strongest glass currently used in a smartphone. Unfortunately, I haven’t yet confirmed if this is indeed the case, as I had the screen protector installed on the device beforehand. If you unlock the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, you’ll be greeted by a large display, interrupted by a small central hole where Samsung placed the front camera. The edges around the panel are slightly smaller than the predecessor. Currently, Galaxy Note 20 ultra and Huawei P40 Pro + can be kept up here. Many should be pleased that the manufacturer has greatly reduced the rounding on both sides of the panel in this year’s Ultra, which meant there was no real entry in my day-to-day use.
Next, let’s take a closer look at the frame. It has metal with a high-gloss finish and is therefore very susceptible to fingerprints and scratches. While the left side of the frame has been kept completely blank, the South Korean manufacturer has installed buttons for More and Toll on the right side. The on/off button is located directly below it. Despite the large form factor, all the keys are still easy to find. The USB-C port, a microphone and one of the two speakers are located at the bottom. The second was integrated into the headset. Of course, we will take a closer look at the quality of the speakers later. Then Samsung installed two more microphones at the top.
If we turn the smartphone over, the silver color we tested is immediately visible. It’s matte, which means it’s not susceptible to fingerprints and it always looks a little different depending on the light incident on it. If this color is too colorful for you, Samsung has four more subtle colors to offer: black, gray, blue and brown.

Apart from the color, you should immediately notice the new design of the camera in the upper left corner. Samsung has brought something new here which I have not seen in any other smartphone in this form. The camera mount extends from the frame of the device to the back. I’m a huge fan of it and I’m still speechless when I compare the design of the S20 Ultra to the S21 Ultra. Samsung has taken a big step here. Unfortunately, the camera ball protrudes quite a bit from the housing, which means the S21 Ultra wobbles quite a bit when used on a table.

There is no reason to criticize the workmanship. There is nothing, nothing wobbles and overall it creates a very stable effect. The keys sit tightly in the case and have a good pressure point.

One of the key features is the integrated OLED display on the front. It measures an impressive 6.8 inches and has a razor sharp resolution of 3,200 x 1,440 pixels. Individual pixels are unrecognizable in everyday life. In addition, the panel supports a smooth refresh rate of 120Hz and this year it can finally be used with WQHD + resolution at the same time. Additionally, it features a so-called LTPO display, which was introduced with the Note 20 Ultra. LTPO technology allows the smartphone to switch between different refresh rates.

I can only say positive things about the quality. Starting with excellent and realistic color reproduction, OLED-specific really good black values, white values, to excellent brightness. No other display is bright in automatic mode. As a result, there is no problem with readability even on sunny days. But unfortunately, I was a little disappointed with the stability of the viewing angle, which is not to say that it is bad, but given the competition and the high price, I would have expected a little more. Samsung may improve this slightly with future smartphones.
Version 3.1 uses the in-house user interface One UI, based on Android 11, as software. A UI is a highly customizable interface that has little to do with stock Android. But I like it relatively well, since the idea of a UI is to be able to operate smartphones well with one hand despite the large display. There are also some additional functions, such as an eye protection mode, a smart gesture control, a great always-on display and double tap to turn on and off. Additionally, Samsung promises to provide updates to the device for four years.

For the past two to three years, ExynosProcessors have been receiving a lot of criticism at home, especially in terms of efficiency. On paper, they were slightly worse than those from Qualcomm in terms of processor performance, but this is very little, because the daily performance is excellent. Applications launch and close very quickly, you won’t find any stuttering or lag, and generally the processing speed is at a very high level. The only thing that could be improved is the processing of photos. Sometimes it takes a long time.
Another criticism of last year’s ExynosProcessors was the development of heat, which our editor Kenneth also saw with the Note 20 Ultra. First, I’d like to give the all-clear for everyday use of the Galaxy S21 Ultra. I didn’t see anything negative here, but was bound to turn around when playing, taking pictures or running benchmarks. Just then the smartphone appears, but no need to worry, hot. This can happen only in summer when the temperature is high.
Samsung has equipped the S21 Ultra with a 5,000 mAh battery that can be charged up to 25 watts fast. However, you must purchase the required power supply separately if required. I think it’s just ridiculous for such a high price, especially since they publicly mocked Apple to begin with.

I always had a good day and often 1, 5 days screen-on-time wasn’t a problem and activating 120Hz was mostly between 8 and 9 hours for me. Around 10 hours was also possible with basic WLAN usage. If you disable the smooth 120Hz refresh rate and use the device at 60Hz, the battery lasts a good hour more. In themselves, these are really excellent values, but for 5.000 mAh you can expect a little more, especially since other smartphones
