I was unable to use it to capture Putrajaya’s distinctive architecture or even to impress relatives during Chinese New Year (which was effectively canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic). The smartphone largely sat on my desk like a caged bear, restrained and unaware.

It feels like a waste because the Galaxy S21 Ultra is a smartphone for creators. It features a highly versatile camera system packed into a powerful device that’s suitable for work, play, and anything else you need a smartphone for. It has the features you need and the features you find redundant.

It’s basically a Galaxy S device in all its pomp and excess. It feels familiar, too: more of an improvement on last year’s S20 series than a groundbreaking departure. However, I consider this to be a good thing.
By polishing the rough edges of the S20 Ultra and adding its own shine, the S21 Ultra shines in its own right. When it comes to overpriced, wallet-busting flagships, it hardly disappoints.
At the same time though, the improvements only serve to highlight the things that are missing from the S21 Ultra. There’s no microSD slot, no cable charger, and no headphones in the package.
Maybe they are minor issues in the grand scheme of things. But for a device that costs more than US$1,200 (RM5,000), what’s missing can seem magnified.

As a team RM5,000. The smartphone has an aluminum frame with a Gorilla Glass Victus back and it feels solid and durable enough. It’s also quite heavy, which combined with the relative bulk of the build makes the S21 Ultra a heavy smartphone.
It’s not the slimmest flagship, but it looks pretty good. I quite liked the industrial chic look and the black version I had looks pretty decent. The glass back, which is now frosted, is pleasant to the touch. However, the smartphone is quite slippery.
The camera island has gotten even bigger, with very prominent lenses. Some may find it embarrassing. I think it’s a very good attempt to highlight the camera system instead of hiding it. In any case, the S21 Ultra is already an eye-catching phone. A large camera island just sells it more IMHO.
Ancestor is much more magical. The Galaxy S21 Ultra has a 2X Dynamic AMOLED display that is as premium as it gets. It’s a 6.8-inch 1440p OLED with an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate, which means you can set the S21 Ultra to display at 120Hz the entire time you touch the phone and drop down to 60Hz a few seconds after your last interaction.

It has a beautiful screen that displays the expected sharp, colorful and bright image that is viewable even in direct sunlight. With a 120Hz refresh rate and HDR+ support, it’s great for video and gaming.
The original S20 Ultra had a limitation where the 120Hz refresh rate only works at 1080p resolution. Here, on the S21 Ultra, it runs at 1440p.
The S21 Ultra offers a stereo speaker setup. It works well: it’s loud, vocals are clear, and it has the right amount of bass.
The S21 Ultra is equipped with one of the most versatile camera systems to date. This is a quad camera setup, starting with a 108MP main camera paired with a 12MP ultra-wide camera. What’s really unique is that it packs two 10MP telephoto lenses for a proper 3x and 10x optical zoom.

Two telephoto zoom lenses add much more versatility to an already complete (by most smartphone standards) camera system, ensuring great-looking images at various zoom levels.
The main shot produces 12 MP photos by default, which look great with plenty of detail and rich colours. Of course, you can go for a 108MP image.
I found that at full resolution, images tended to lose quality of detail, but you can manually scale down the whopping 108MP photo for even sharper, more detailed images.
As far as ultra-wide photos go, they look good too: colors look accurate with solid contrast, though it doesn’t have a lot of fine detail. The ultra-wide also has autofocus, so you can use it for wide-angle shots, which is great.

Both zoom sensors also produce great photos and I can’t find any difference in quality between the two. Colors are accurate and contrast is good. The front selfie camera is a 40MP snapper that is similar to the one on the S20 Ultra. It is excellent, it provides a lot of detail and spot colors.
The cameras work well even in low light and night shots. The main camera produces excellent night shots with good sharpness and exposure. Shoot in night mode and you’ll get even sharper images.
The wide-angle camera is also pretty decent at night, though it doesn’t produce the best detail. Both telephoto shooters also produce decent night shots with accurate colors and surprisingly low noise. Night mode works on all cameras, so use it if you can – it vastly improves your footage.
The Galaxy S21 Ultra is also great for videos. It supports 4K video recording at 60 frames per second on all five cameras, including selfies. You can even opt for 8K video at 24fps with the main camera.

I haven’t shot much with the S21 Ultra, but [email protected] video feels great, while [email protected] feels a bit smoother.
What’s great is the Director’s View mode, which shows live feeds from all four cameras at once, so you can choose which one to use for recording. Good for finding the right camera for different situations without having to switch between them.
Those who care about specific parts inside their smartphones will be disappointed to learn that the Malaysian version of the S21 Ultra has an Exynos 2100 SoC instead of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 that powers the US version.
There are more detailed benchmarks that show their respective differences, but in daily use I find the Exynos 2100 offers the power and performance needed for both work and play.
Galaxy S21 Ultra 5g Review: Samsung’s Best S Series For $200 Less Than Last Year’s Model
The S21 Ultra uses a 5000 mAh battery, which is the same as its predecessor. Since the S21 Ultra offers a 1440p 120Hz display, I expected battery life to be only nominal at best.
Surprisingly, the device offers fairly consistent battery life: a full day of web browsing, a few games, some Netflix, and plenty of time on social media still gets me down to 30% juice at 11pm.
You can expect the S21 Ultra to be a productive device. For example, with Samsung DeX you can use your phone like a computer and add a monitor and keyboard to it, either wirelessly or via HDMI. More interestingly, the S21 Ultra is the first Galaxy S device to support the Samsung S Pen.
You have to buy the S Pen separately, and there’s no stylus slot on the device like you would on a Galaxy Note, but there are cases for it.

I tried using the S Pen Note10+ on the S21 Ultra and it instantly pairs just by tapping the device on the screen. The S21 Ultra supports basic S Pen functions, from Screen-off Memo to Screen Write and Screen Translate. What it lacks are aerial actions that are likely to be shallow.
The addition of S Pen functionality to the S21 Ultra is just the icing on a very tall cake. This tall pie also costs an attractive RM5899 for the 512 GB variant. As mentioned, the S21 Ultra does not support microSD storage expansion and does not include a charger.
The good news is that there are several charging options: there is wireless charging of more than 10W and the phone also has Wireless PowerShare, which allows you to charge other devices wirelessly. But for the small fortune you’ll be paying for the device, these small omissions stand out enormously.
But I guess these are minor losses in the ultra scheme of things. The Galaxy S21 Ultra is a proper flagship device: powerful, versatile, and likely to last you years into the near future of 5G. It’s hard to see smartphones as an “investment” when we see how quickly each iteration is outgrown.
