This year, the Galaxy S21 series arrived earlier than expected and brought a few changes. The Galaxy S21 and S21+ now have lower-resolution OLEDs, no microSD expansion, and no chargers. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S21 Ultra is what the original Ultra was meant to be – full of premium features, no stars, no fine print. Still no charger though.

The original S20 Ultra was supposed to be the biggest Galaxy yet, but it failed. You can enjoy a 120Hz refresh rate, but only at a lower resolution of 1080p. The telephoto camera was advertised as 5x, but it was actually 4x, and let’s not even get started on Space Zoom. The ultra-wide camera had a good sensor, but couldn’t do macro shots due to the lack of autofocus. The battery was great, but the battery life was poor. You get the point.
Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra Review: A Note In All But Name
Well, the Galaxy S21 Ultra makes up for it all. It has a large 1440p display with native 120Hz support which is flexible. It also has two dedicated telephoto lens locks, one for 3x and one for 10x optical zoom. Its ultra-wide camera has autofocus that’s good for macros. The new Ultra also offers Super Wide Range support and Surf, surprise surprise, S-Pen support. It has to be the first non-Note Galaxy phone to offer this – into the history books.
There’s no S-Pen slot on the Galaxy S21 Ultra, and there’s also no in-pack stylus. However, you can use any S-Pen in circulation except the newly announced S-Pen for the S21 Ultra and the upcoming S-Pen Pro. Samsung has also opened up the S-Pen to third-party companies that make Wacom-based pens, so you can expect even more options in the coming months. Finally, you can keep the pen in your pocket or choose several S21 Ultra cases with special pen holders.
The Galaxy S21 Ultra is the only upcoming S21 model with a 1440p OLED display, unlike previous generations. And even better, it now supports 120Hz at this high resolution, so you don’t have to choose between high resolution and high refresh rate. This new Ultra display also supports an adaptive refresh rate that can range from 10Hz to 120Hz, just like the Note20 Ultra.
Of course, the latest Galaxy has the latest chipset. All international models use Samsung’s new Exynos 2100 SoC (like the one we’re reviewing), while US and China devices run on the Snapdragon 888. The RAM has been reduced to 12GB, and there is also a limited 16GB model.
Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra Review Revisited: This Year’s Galaxy Note
The camera has received a welcome update. The wide shooters are still pretty much the same, a 108MP shooter with f/1.8 26mm lens and a 12MP camera with f/2.2 13mm optics, but it now has autofocus. The zoom system has been completely revamped though, now featuring two 10MP images, one for 3x optical zoom and 10x optical zoom via the 240mm periscope lens.
Other flagship details worth mentioning include a 40MP selfie camera with AF, stereo speakers, Wi-Fi 6e, 5G connectivity, ultra-wideband support for short-range communication, fast wireless and wireless charging of a large 5,000mAh battery.
But this year is not off to a good start for fans of rich retail portfolios. Like Apple and Xiaomi, Samsung has removed chargers and earphones from retail boxes and is launching each Galaxy S21 with just a cable.
The Note10 ditched the 3.5mm jack, and now the Galaxy S21 ditches the microSD slot. Samsung makes up for this with a small price difference between the 128GB and 256GB models – just €50. Whether this compensation is enough is up to you.

In 2021 Back in January, we gave the Galaxy S21 Ultra 4.5/5 stars in our initial phone review and named it one of the best phones of the year. We were briefed on what the phone had to offer in the core processing, display and camera departments. Especially compared to the Galaxy S20 Ultra, which we weren’t so happy with, especially its design.
Six months after the phone came out, we were still happy. Even compared to Samsung’s new foldable phones, the Galaxy S21 Ultra was still a great buy. The $1,200 starting price didn’t stop us from recommending it.
With another six months to go, it’s time to give the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra a well-deserved long-term review.
Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus Vs. Galaxy S21 Ultra: What Should You Buy?
So far, the closest and latest Android 2022 competitor we’ve seen to the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is the OnePlus 10 Pro, a phone you can’t even buy outside of China. Interestingly, most of the specifications of that phone are the same or weaker than the Galaxy S21 Ultra.
For example, the battery sizes are the same (5000 mAh). The displays are also very similar: large WQHD AMOLED displays with 120 Hz adaptive refresh rates. At the same time, the Galaxy S21 Ultra has the largest amount of RAM (up to 16 GB) and the largest amount of internal memory (up to 512 GB). The Galaxy S21 Ultra’s camera specs are also significantly better than the OnePlus 10 Pro.
Except for two areas, the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s spec sheet is still better than the OnePlus 10 Pro.
In fact, the OnePlus 10 Pro beats the Galaxy S21 Ultra in only two areas: processor and charging speed.
