This is a slimmed-down lineup from 2020’s S20 launch, offering a slightly cheaper 4G device. This year, Samsung only committed to 5G – and lowered its prices. Equivalent models are cheaper across the range – for example the base model S21 is £130 less than the equivalent S20 at launch.

All phones are compatible with wireless charging, and Samsung has retained last year’s IP68 rating, meaning they can survive a drop in water up to 1.5 meters deep for up to 30 minutes.
However, it’s not all good news on the features front. Like last year’s iPhone 12 range, Samsung didn’t provide a charger in the box, just a USB cable. Additionally, not all of them have the microSD card slot found in the S20 range, so you’ll need to choose your storage options carefully.

The new series has a developed design, especially noticeable with the camera setup at the back. In our opinion it’s tidier and flows better – as opposed to the more ‘exploded’ feel of the S20. The S21 also has a plastic back, although the other two phones in this range stick to glass.
The Galaxy S21, the cheapest and smallest of the bunch, costs less at launch than last year’s S20 5G.
The 6.2-inch screen size is the same as the S20, making it by far the most compact of the new models.
Most updates to the S21 range are cumulative. It was equipped with a slightly more powerful processor (Exynos 2100). This should improve its running performance and multitasking ability. You also get a larger fingerprint sensor under the screen.

Disappointingly, the display resolution has dropped from 1,440 x 3,200 to 1,080 x 2,400 pixels. However, it has an adjustable refresh rate, which varies from 48Hz to 120Hz in a step to save battery life.
There are modest improvements to the camera, although these are more functional – it uses the same triple camera setup as its predecessor.
Not much separates the S21+ from the S21, but mostly you get a glass back and 0.5 inches of extra screen.
However, it has the same updated processor as the S21, and the battery is bigger than last year’s 4,500mAh.

The S21 Ultra is a clear step up, and not just in price. It has the biggest screen, the biggest battery and the most cameras (four rear and one front) in the range.
It has the brightest display of any Galaxy phone to date, reaching 1,500 nits, and is the only phone in this year’s lineup to offer 12GB of RAM (or 16GB if you opt for the 512GB version).
It’s compatible with the S Pen, for those who like to use a stylus with a larger phone.

Its screen is a bit smaller (6.8-inches to 6.9-inches), but the S21 Ultra is the only phone in this year’s lineup to retain the 2020-range’s 1,440 x 3,200-pixel resolution.
Like the other two 2021 launches, it’s powered by an Exynos 2100 processor – a step up from last year’s phones.
Samsung saved its major camera upgrades for its most expensive model. Like the S20 Ultra, it has four rear cameras, but ups the ante with two telephoto lenses offering 3x and 10x zoom, a 108Mp ‘bright night’ wide lens, and each camera has the ability to record in 4K.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Fan Edition (FE) is the latest addition to the recently announced Galaxy FE series (the other FE device, aside from last year’s Galaxy S20 FE, is the Note 7 FE).
Presumably designed as Samsung’s answer to the growing range of mid-budget flagships, they retain the premium bits that make the Galaxy S series the successes they are, but are cheaper by leaving out only what average users don’t need to pay attention to.
This is a formula adopted by Google with its Pixel A devices. Such devices typically launch about six months after the flagships, catering to those looking for something big but not top dollar. Ultimately, they’re sales managers mid-cycle updates that target regular users, keeping things fresh until the next big launch.

The release of the Galaxy S21 FE was supposed to be a follow-up to the much-acclaimed Galaxy S20 FE. Unfortunately, a global chip shortage meant the Galaxy S21 FE arrived a full five months behind schedule, weeks after the launch of the Galaxy S22 series.
Retailing at S$978 for the 8GB RAM/128GB storage variant (the 12GB RAM/256GB storage variant goes for S$70 more), this is a phone that needs to up its game to attract users.
Holding the device in hand, I find the look and feel of the Galaxy S21 FE familiar. It uses the same “glass” material from its brother S21 which is actually plastic, but imitates frosted glass. The main difference here is that the camera bump uses the same material instead of the metal covers of its non-FE siblings.
There are those who find the material not high enough quality. Personally, I like the material as it is lighter and less fragile than glass. It’s also quite resistant to fingerprints, especially in the bright purple color of our review device. Samsung has made some really plasticky phones in the past like the Galaxy S5, but this is not one, in my book.

The device has rounded edges and a matte chrome finish, and seems to be quite resistant to micro-scratches during my days of use.
They are made of metal, and the gentle curves and design remind me of iPhone 6/7/8 devices (right down to the antenna bands). I guess there are only so many ways to make the sides of a smart device. At least they are comfortable to hold.
Beyond the material, the Galaxy S21 FE is curved, square, and its buttons are in similar places as siblings. The left and top sides of the device are empty, except for an ambient microphone on the top right.
The SIM card tray and one of the two speakers decorate the bottom (the other shoots from the speaker of the hand at the top center edge of the screen). The volume control and power buttons are on the right side.
Galaxy S21 Drop Test: Samsung’s Newest Phones Didn’t Last Long
Measuring 155.7 x 74.5 x 7.9 millimeters and weighing 177 grams, the Galaxy S21 FE is a pretty handy device by my standards. At no point did I find the device bulky nor can it fit in a pocket. After using a long line of phablets, I even started to appreciate how I didn’t feel any swelling in my jeans pocket when I sat down.
Its 6.4-inch screen sits between the 6.1-inch Galaxy S21 and the 6.7-inch Galaxy S21+. The display on offer here is the same full-fat Dynamic AMOLED 2X 1,080 x 2,400 pixel unit that features high 120Hz refresh rates and HDR10 support as its compatriots, and is similarly toughened with Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus. True to its mission, no corners are cut (figuratively or literally).
Nothing to complain about the display. Viewing angles and brightness are very good in direct sunlight, in keeping with Samsung’s tradition with portable OLED displays.
However, I had both the Galaxy S21 FE and the Galaxy S22 Ultra in my possession during the review, and the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s display is a bit brighter and looks better, but that’s likely a result of generational improvements rather than a difference in component class.
