Between the success of the Galaxy S20 FE and the plethora of leaks we’ve seen ahead of time, the Galaxy S21 FE might be one of Samsung’s worst-kept secrets. The new S21 FE, a follow-up to Samsung’s previous mid-range Galaxy S smartphone, starts at $700 and goes on sale on January 11. It has the same processor even though it’s $100 cheaper than the regular Galaxy S21. And support for both versions with a larger screen, three-lens camera and 5G. The Galaxy S21 FE feels exactly like its predecessor, and that’s not a bad thing. After all, buying an old cell phone is a great way to save money. But that also means you shouldn’t expect anything amazing or new from the S21 FE.
The Galaxy S21 FE looks almost identical to the Galaxy S21 from the front: it’s a bit bigger and heavier than the S21 (177 grams compared to 169 grams), but it’s just as slim at 7.9mm thick. For me, the S21 FE’s 6.4-inch screen and lightweight build strike the right balance between screen space and usability. It’s bigger than the 6.2-inch Galaxy S21, but only slightly smaller than the 6.5-inch Galaxy S20 FE. A mid-range phone of the generation.

It’s a good enough phone for $700, but in my opinion the real problem is that Google has raised the bar for what you expect from a mid-range phone. Google’s $600 Pixel 6 has a striking two-tone glass design with sharper corners and feels a lot like the Galaxy Note. Design can be subjective, but the Pixel 6 feels bigger than it actually is. Some people may find the Galaxy S21 FE to be slimmer, lighter and easier to use with one hand than the Pixel 6, but it doesn’t give the same impression.
There’s also an in-display fingerprint reader and face unlock to unlock the device, which we found to be pretty reliable overall. Samsung Galaxy S21 Fe Review: Fan Edition Again, But In A Different Sense
The Galaxy S21 FE still had 32% battery after a day and a half of use. Especially since I set the motion smoothness to high, which allowed me to increase the screen refresh rate to 120Hz, which resulted in faster scrolling, but also usually less battery life.
Samsung’s new phone has the same processor as the Galaxy S21. This means that the US version works with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888. That chip is found in other high-end phones like Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3 and OnePlus 9 Pro, so the S21 FE should easily accommodate those devices.
The Galaxy S21 FE feels nimble and fluid, especially with motion smoothness turned on. The interface is smooth, games run flawlessly and the camera starts up in seconds. Samsung also says that the S21 FE will support 240Hz response speeds, which, like other members of the Galaxy S21 series, will allow for even faster response times in gaming mode. But personally, I didn’t notice any difference playing games like Asphalt 9 or Shadowgun: Legends on the S21 FE compared to the Pixel 6.
The Galaxy S21 FE scored about the same as the Galaxy S21, but scored higher than the Pixel 6 on Geekbench 5. This is a benchmark test that aims to evaluate the phone’s performance in common tasks. However, in another benchmark called 3DMark Slingshot Unlimited to test graphics performance, it scored slightly lower than both the regular S21 and Pixel 6. See the results below.
Samsung Galaxy S21 Fe Review: Don’t Pay Full Price
Samsung’s new smartphone has a triple-lens camera similar to the camera setup of the Galaxy S20 FE. There is a 12 megapixel ultrawide camera, a 12 megapixel wide angle camera and an 8 megapixel telephoto camera with 30x digital zoom.
Based on my experience, the Galaxy S21 FE seems to hold its own against the Pixel 6’s 50-megapixel camera and the standard Galaxy S21, but there are some key differences. The S21 FE’s images are rich in detail and color, and the camera performs well in a variety of lighting conditions.
Whether the Galaxy S21 FE or Pixel 6 has better image quality depends on your preference. Samsung phone cameras tend to exaggerate colors, and the S21 FE is no different. Some might prefer Samsung’s more colorful photos, but for the most part Google’s images looked more true to their surroundings. (Note: aside from adjusting the crop ratio on the Pixel 6, I didn’t change any camera settings on either phone before testing.)
Overall, I think the Pixel 6’s photos have the best balance between consistency and accuracy, but it’s safe to say that both phones can take really great photos. Photos taken with both phones sometimes looked the same, but the green forest image below highlights the differences between Samsung’s and Google’s cameras. The Galaxy S21 FE image looks richer and bolder, while Google’s image looks more lifelike. For example, the Pixel 6 photo below shows a red note near the tip of the leaf. You can’t even see it in the Galaxy S21 FE image.
