The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra has led the race for the best Android phones in 2021. It has all the features you could want in a phone, especially if you want big screens. Although it lags behind some of the best competitors, it’s still a great device for Android fans.

For $1,199 — or $100 more than the iPhone 13 Pro Max — you get a dynamic 6.8-inch display with dual-lens lenses for insane zoom power. Also, the S21 Ultra supports the S Pen, a first for the Galaxy S series.

You can still find it at other stores and wireless carriers, but pay less than the original price of $1,199 because you’re getting the newer Galaxy S22 Ultra. At the time of writing, Best Buy is selling the carrier-bound version of the Galaxy S21 Ultra for $849, and unlocked versions can be found on Amazon for $750. Buying a refurbished Galaxy S21 Ultra will lower the price.

The entry-level S21 Ultra includes 12GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. You can also upgrade to 256 GB of storage and a model with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage. The 256GB used model costs $1,249 – an additional $50 – and the Galaxy S21 Ultra with 512GB of storage will set you back $1,379. In the UK, the Galaxy S21 Ultra starts at £1,149 for the base model with 12GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. That price has risen to £1,199 for the 256GB handset and £1,329 for the 16GB and 512GB model.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is a monolith of phones. Yes, the circular cut-out camera design merges the camera stand with the glass back, but it’s still a large device that you’ll want to use with both hands. We already know it’s the best device in our Tom’s Mobile Phones 2021 awards.

With its 0.35-inch display and 8.08-ounce weight, the S21 Ultra is thicker and heavier than the iPhone 12 Pro Max. The screen is slightly curved, not flat like the Galaxy S21, but not boring. I didn’t accidentally tap anything on the screen like last year’s Ultra.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra only comes in two carrier colors: Phantom Black and Phantom Silver. I would probably choose the black one because of the slimming power. Samsung.com offers special S21 Ultra colors, including Phantom Navy, Phantom Titanium, and Phantom Brown. Best Buy also has a special Navy Blue color.

One of my favorite design upgrades is the 1.7x larger fingerprint sensor. Unlocking the phone is easier and I found that the S21 Ultra doesn’t ask me to press the button again like previous phones.

The 6.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED display on the Galaxy S21 Ultra is one of the best displays on a phone. It’s bright and vibrant and you don’t have to choose between high resolution and high cooling rates like before.

Yes, you will be amazed while watching videos on this phablet. Colors are consistent and viewing angles are nice and wide when watching Netflix.

But the Ultra beats the iPhone with its dynamic refresh rate. Not only do you get super smooth scrolling and gaming, you get 120Hz and square HD resolution at the same time. So you don’t have to choose between high resolution and high refresh rate.

The S21 Ultra is also smart enough to automatically adjust the refresh rate up to 10Hz to save power.

Better yet, the S21 Ultra’s display is easy to read outdoors, reaching 1,500 nits of brightness. In our test, the S21 Ultra averaged 821 nits, beating the iPhone 12 Pro Max’s 654 nits.

The S21 Ultra’s display proved very vivid in our lab tests, with the panel producing 81.4% of the DCI-P3 color application, compared to 84.8% for the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Colors on the iPhone are more accurate, with its display achieving a Delta-E rating of 0.07, compared to 0.35 for the Galaxy S21 Ultra.

Samsung says the S21 Ultra has a contrast ratio of 3 million:1, which is 50% higher than the S20 Ultra. There’s also an Eye Comfort feature designed to reduce eye fatigue by reducing blue light.

In terms of cameras, the Galaxy S21 Ultra stands out from the S21 and S21 Plus. It has a 108MP wide-angle main camera and a 12MP ultra-wide camera, complemented by a laser autofocus sensor.

But now that the Galaxy S22 is the new kid on the block, Samsung has announced that it’s bringing some of that phone’s camera features to the Galaxy S21 Ultra, such as night shots and a telephoto lens.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Fe Review: Questionable Value

With the Galaxy S21 Ultra, you’ll feel like a secret shopper as you zoom. While the iPhone 12 Pro Max has a 2.5x optical zoom, the S21 Ultra has a 3x telephoto lens with 10x optical zoom.

I was surprised how close this sign was on the side of the highway. At 100x the zoom is shaky, but the new Zoom Lock feature can help you get a better photo with just one click.

The 108 MP main camera can capture 12-bit HDR images with 64 times more color data and more than three times the dynamic range of the S20 Ultra. Additionally, there is a 12-bit RAW file option in Pro mode.

I tried out the camera at a nearby grocery store to capture some fruit, and the green peppers out front looked bright and delicious. And you can come up with the most amazing stories when you stretch. However, in comparison, the iPhone 12 Pro Max looks more powerful.

Galaxy S21 Ultra is your best friend on the go. Take this photo of the tall trees I took in a nearby park. You can make out nice details on the skin, and the phone captures the clouds in the blue sky well despite all the shadows in the foreground. I prefer the photo from the S21 Ultra in this case to the iPhone 12 Pro Max, but it’s very close.

Samsung says it has improved portrait mode on the S21 by using AI to better separate the subject from the background. The S21 Ultra offers a nice bokeh effect here. My skin tone is warmer on the iPhone 12 pro Max, but overall the S21 camera looks good.
