Samsung kept the high-quality 120Hz panel for the S20 FE, giving you super smooth scrolling. It also has a 240Hz sample rate for highly responsive gaming. To me, why Samsung didn’t add this feature to Note 20 is strange.
The FE retains the OLED panel with a small cutout at the top for the front camera, however, it has FHD+ resolution instead of WQHD+ like on the Galaxy S20. Since you can’t mix 120Hz and higher resolutions anyway, this change seems fine to me.
The screen isn’t as color accurate as the S20, and it lacks HDR 10 support in apps like Netflix, however, unless you put the two phones side by side it’s hard to spot. It’s still a really good background, with enough brightness to withstand a hot sunny day.
Instead of a physical button, like you see on the Pixel 5, there’s an in-display fingerprint scanner instead of a physical button. It’s a bit different from the sensors Samsung usually uses, as it’s optical rather than ultrasonic and requires light to work. You will see a bright light around your finger when pressed, and it can be a bit annoying if you open it in a dark room at night. Still, it’s fast, responsive, and has an inline interface if you want it.

At 6.5 inches, the FE sits between the smaller S20 and the larger S20 Plus. For me, it feels like the perfect size and I really appreciate the flat screen, the gaming capabilities are much better than the curved screen.

I don’t mind the plastic feel, especially on a very cheap phone like this, and I really like the matte finish which doesn’t pick up fingerprints like glass – always feels good. What’s more important to me is that the phone is still IP68 rated for water resistance and still has Qi wireless charging. Two features often remain at this price. What’s missing is a 3.5mm headphone jack, so you’ll have to use a USB-C connector or wireless Bluetooth to play audio.
It also comes in a variety of beautiful colors, including a very modern navy blue and a stunning red. These are pretty much the most exciting colors you’ll find on the S20, and Samsung says they’re all available from different networks with the usual exceptions.

One of the main highlights of the Galaxy S20 FE is that the UK 5G version comes with the Snapdragon 865 platform, instead of the usual Exynos chipset you’ll find in the higher-end Note 20 series and Galaxy S20.
Many people have complained about the performance and battery life of the Exynos version falling compared to Qualcomm, so it’s great to see Samsung decide to launch in a big way for a better model.
Now, if you opt for the cheaper 4G version, you’ll get Samsung’s Exynos 990. This type will not be available in the United States. Along with this chipset, you get 6GB of fast RAM and 128GB of expandable storage.
The Snapdragon 865 performed better in benchmark tests than the Exynos variant, but the real win comes with better battery life – which you can read more about below. As you would expect from a flagship chipset, performance is at its peak. Whether you’re playing games on the device, streaming Xbox titles via GamePass, or otherwise pushing the phone, it handles everything without overheating or slowing down.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE has a 4500mAh battery, matching the Galaxy S20 Plus and outperforming all other S20 models in my tests. This is almost certainly due to the Snapdragon 865 chip, which seems to be more efficient than its Exynos version.

The main 12MP sensor takes some really great photos, which isn’t surprising as it’s a camera we’ve seen many times before and is impressive in every task. Samsung is still king when it comes to images with rich colors, deep saturation, and a bit more sharpness, and those qualities are clearly visible here. These pictures were shared on social media and I totally understand why they are so popular.
Are the photos better than the Pixel 4a? For me it is not. But that’s subjective and you’ll definitely get sharper details and brighter colors here. The Pixel 4a still scores well for dynamic range, natural bokeh and, importantly, night mode.

Low-light performance is good, and you can get good photos without bright light in the default mode or the special night option. Switching between focal lengths is easy, and the S20 FE takes good pictures at both super wide and 3x zoom. None of these sensors have the same quality as the original sensor, and the results can be choppy, especially when zooming, but they do offer some flexibility. It’s also good to see Samsung isn’t ditching another sensor for it, some other brands offer cheaper Android phones so note that…
The 32MP front camera is great for selfies, and it has some software features that push it a bit and capture more faces. Video is also solid, even if it lacks the 8K capabilities of the regular S20.
In the UK, we only have the Galaxy S20 version with Samsung’s Exynos chipset inside. It’s good but has worse performance and less battery life than the Snapdragon model. It’s proven here, announced as the S20 FE 5G model with the super-fast Snapdragon 865.

Really, there’s very little to dislike about the S20 FE and it’s definitely one of the best phones at this price point. While being the best, the quality of the secondary cameras was not as good as expected and they felt that they were completed simply because the parts were cheap.
