Samsung launched its Galaxy A12 as a direct successor to the Galaxy A11 in November 2020 before bringing it to the US in April 2021. It has been replaced by the Galaxy A13 series.
The Galaxy A12 offers a total of six different configurations to match the best budget Samsung phones, starting with as little as 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. However, only three are currently available in the United States (listed above). Whichever way you go, you’ll also have access to four color options – red, blue, black and white
Our Samsung Galaxy A12 arrived with Android 10 on board, although the Android 11 update to Samsung’s One UI 3.1 is available via OTA. It was also running the July 1, 2021 Android security patch at the time of testing. It should receive two years of software updates as well as four years of all security updates, which will hold the Galaxy A12 until late 2024 or early 2025. Our unit hasn’t received Android 12 yet, but it should soon.
As you move through the software, you’ll find the MediaTek Helio P35 SoC powering Samsung’s entry-level device. RAM and storage options up to 6GB and 128GB respectively, and you can go even further with a microSD slot. A standard 5,000mAh battery and a 6.5-inch HD+ panel tie everything together, and the display comes with an Infinity-V display. In India, there is a variant that swaps the Helio P35 for Samsung’s own Exynos 850 chipset.

Samsung has dropped the wired earbuds from the packaging this time around, though it still provides a charging pad and USB-C cable. You also get a SIM removal tool and a basic start-up guide, in case you need help from the ground. Samsung’s Galaxy A12 is also available on Verizon, UScellular and AT&T.
The budget-friendly phone seems almost determined to add a glass back and a fingerprint magnet finish to give it air quality. Fortunately, Samsung’s Galaxy A12 keeps the trend going, but instead opts for a matte finish that feels soft in the hand. I also appreciate the raised diagonal lines as they add a little extra grip to the overall design.
The large 6.5 inch screen means a good grip is essential if you hope to cross the case. While the screen sticks to HD+ resolution, it’s still large enough and clear enough to keep up with your latest shows. We’ll always appreciate a headphone jack, and wired headphones are the best way to enjoy audio on the Galaxy A12, as opposed to the mono speaker that slides down.
Samsung also decided to leave the fingerprint reader attached to the back of the Galaxy A11 in the past. Instead, the Galaxy A12 uses a side-mounted option, which is very fast, easy to use and overall cleaning of the device.

The back panel adorns Samsung’s camera array, capped off by a 48MP primary shooter, which works well enough outdoors for a budget camera phone (see the review later for an example). You can also use the macro and ultra-wide cameras for extra flexibility. The camera app is easy to navigate, although it may take a minute or two to find the macro button since it’s embedded in an additional tab.
Samsung’s One UI is one of the better Android skins on the market right now, and it’s as good as ever on the Galaxy A12. Specifically, the Samsung Free app is kind of like Google’s Discover feed, but with a kick. Instead of just offering news, Samsung Free brings Samsung TV Plus, Samsung Podcasts, Taboola News and Instant Plays in one place. Best of all, you don’t have to spend a fortune for it.
The Galaxy A12 is also a battery wizard, at least as far as charging is concerned. I had no problem getting a good two days between playing light games, answering emails and browsing social media.

The Samsung Free app might be a nice addition to the bundle, but Samsung doesn’t stop there when deciding how much to add to its version on Android. Unfortunately, there are a lot of special apps on the Galaxy A12 that take up a lot of space. It comes with a full suite of Google apps as well as Samsung apps which leads to a lot of redundancy. There are also Microsoft alternatives such as Office, OneDrive and Outlook. You’ll also see the Samsung Store, Galaxy Shop and Galaxy Store – how many people want two Samsung stores and a Play Store option?
The good news is that you can at least uninstall Microsoft’s bloat, but that doesn’t do much to slow down the Galaxy A12’s trend. MediaTek’s Helio P35 doesn’t always seem up to the task of turning on the 6.5-inch display, and jumping back and forth between apps only slows things down further. The limited RAM and storage doesn’t help, so you might want to look at the 4GB / 64GB RAM version if you can find it.

Although Samsung packed a solid main lens on the Galaxy A12, the funky bezel option isn’t always a pretty shape. The macro lens only offers 2MP, and it took quite a bit of effort to achieve the reasonably clear sample image below. Additionally, you won’t find a dedicated night mode on the Galaxy A12, so you’ll have to endure some trial and error outside of daylight hours.

While all phones add a little magic after pressing the shutter button, the final result for photos taken on the Galaxy A12 is often better than what the camera app shows. For example, the low-light image below looks very dark when I press the shutter button, and none of the images in comparison look as clean as what you see. Most of the time it ends up being a nice surprise, but it makes judging your shots a little difficult. Portrait mode is also not good with edge detection, as you can see in the example around my hair.
Samsung may have packed a solid battery into its Galaxy A12, but the 15W charging speed is woefully underpowered, even for a budget phone like this. I can charge from 3% to 23% after 30 minutes, full charge takes more than 2 hours.
The Samsung Galaxy A12 is a strong upgrade over the Galaxy A11 in almost every way. What this budget-friendly phone brings to the table is a good 48MP main camera, excellent battery life and Samsung’s crisp One UI software. Unfortunately, the side camera lacks a lot of punch, and the slow performance can be frustrating, but these are to be expected at this price level.
The Samsung Galaxy A12 is an upgrade over the Galaxy A11 in almost every way and is perfect for people buying their first smartphone.

It’s been a while since the Galaxy A12 was launched, and Samsung’s budget phone has been replaced a few times. Samsung’s Galaxy A14 5G ($199.99 at Samsung), which trades up to a Galaxy S23-inspired design that feels more premium in the hand. The newer model is also set to receive a few more software updates due to its 2023 launch date. You can also check out the Motorola Moto G 5G ($199 at Amazon), which is at a similar point in Motorola’s line. It has a similar plastic design and 15W wired charging, though it can’t keep up with Samsung’s updated promises. Another option to consider is the OnePlus Nord N300 ($228 at OnePlus). The cheapest Nord is all about simplicity, with only two rear cameras and a clean black design. It’s also top of the line for wired charging speeds.
