The equation for calculating which device is best for each person is complicated at best. At its simplest, it involves finding the right features at a price a person is willing to pay.
In its Galaxy S 2019 collection, Samsung reflected the strategy announced by Apple at the end of last year. While Apple offers iPhones for $749, $999, and $1,099, Samsung also now offers high-end phones for $749, $899, and $999. By covering a wider price range, Samsung has given itself a better chance to solve the equation for more people.
At $649 (or more if you upgrade the storage), the Galaxy S10 has plenty of competition from its siblings, not to mention the entire market. Has Samsung tuned the S10 the right way to score with consumers? We are here to tell you.
We Asked, You Told Us: Unsurprisingly, The Best Galaxy S10 Model Is…
Samsung is the leader in its class when it comes to hardware. It improves its phones every year, at least incrementally, and this year there’s a nice evolution in design compared to last year’s Galaxy S9. The S10 is still metal and glass, but it still feels more affordable to me.
The curvature of the front and back glass surface is therefore and merges perfectly with the metal frame. Samsung has softened the feel of the side edges, which felt a bit sharp on the S8 and S9. The frame swells slightly in thickness at the top and bottom, which gives the phone strength. Since the S10 is one of the first phones with Gorilla Glass 6, we still have no real information on how it will break. Like all glass phones, I felt jittery using the S10 while walking on city streets or standing on tile or concrete floors. Gorilla Glass is still glass.
The main “feature” of the S10 is its size. It’s slightly larger than the S10e and slightly smaller than the S10 Plus. It’s also slightly smaller than competing devices like the HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro, LG G8 and OnePlus 6T. In other words, if you’re avoiding mega-huge phones but still want all the best specs, the S10 fits the bill. This is doubly good for people with smaller hands.
I used the phone without the case and was happy with the way it looked. It slipped nicely into my pocket and was easy to use with one hand. I usually prefer phones with bigger screens, but the punch-hole display has allowed Samsung to fit ever-larger screens into ever-smaller devices.

All buttons and ports do their job. I’m glad to see the 3.5mm headphone jack on the bottom of the phone, which is easier to access. For the first time, the controversial Bixby button on the left side can be redirected to other apps (except Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa). That’s a huge improvement and Samsung’s tacit admission that its original thinking wasn’t in line with the consumer. preferences The buttons themselves offer a smooth and crisp action.
The camera selection is gigantic. It extends 1.75 inches across the rear window in a raised rectangular module. The module is black regardless of the color of the rest of the device. In addition to three cameras and a flash, the module also contains a heart rate sensor.
I have checked that the phone is waterproof and the IP68 rating is maintained. The S10 shook out of the shower like a wet dog.
When Samsung first introduced the S10, it said three key pillars would drive it: display, camera and performance. Samsung’s focus paid off.
Samsung Galaxy S10 Review: Is This The Finest Samsung Phone?
Simply put, the S10 has one of the best screens I’ve ever seen. It’s amazing from top to bottom. Samsung’s Super AMOLED technology has always been impressive and its latest version is simply fantastic.
Samsung says the S10’s display uses Dynamic OLED technology. It combines blue light reduction and brightness control in a way that reduces eye strain by 42%. HDR10+ offers plenty of brightness and contrast. This means that everything looks amazing. Colors are more accurate and viewing high-definition content from Netflix and other providers is impressive.
S10 enables alternative viewing experiences. For example, it comes in a natural color, but users can choose a vivid color if they want. The Vibrant setting makes the colors pop a little more. If you choose vivid, you can also adjust the white balance and even the red, green and blue saturation levels. The S10 includes a night mode for those who like darker backgrounds. As always, you can adjust the resolution (high, medium, low), icon size, and text size to suit your needs.
There is a hole in the screen. Samsung calls this the Inifinty-O display. The cutout is a small circle located in the upper right corner of the vase. The ambient light and proximity sensors are buried under the display. This allowed Samsung to extend the screen towards the top edge of the phone and achieve a screen ratio of 93.1 percent. In other words, the S10 offers an “all-screen” experience as we’ve seen. I haven’t decided if I like the notch or the hole better. The only time I really notice the hole is when I’m watching a video in full screen and then it cracks.
Galaxy S10 Review: Still Worth It, Even With Galaxy S20 Looming
The fingerprint reader hidden under the display isn’t that great. On-screen readers are the latest trend among flagship phones. We’ve seen them on the HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro, the OnePlus 6T, and most recently the Nokia 9. None of these implementations have been up to par in my book, but the S10 is more useful than the Nokia 9 or Mate 20 Plus.
For starters, it’s an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. Instead of taking a photo of the impression, take a 3D scan of the outline of your finger. This protects against scams. Samsung says fingerprint data is stored in the device’s Knox Trust Zone, which protects it from hackers. I have no doubts about the safety. The problem is performance.
Like most others, the reader under glass is easy to train. No problem there. It’s mostly about speed. The reader is not fast enough. You should place your thumb well and hold it for a moment. It only takes a few seconds to find the right spot, tap/hold, etc., but it feels like an eternity when you need to quickly respond to an urgent message. In comparison, the traditional fingerprint sensor on the back of the Galaxy Note 9 is easy to find with ID and unlocks the phone in no time.
Just as frustrating, Samsung says the fingerprint sensor isn’t compatible with all third-party screen protectors. Work with accessory manufacturers to ensure compatible screen protectors are certified and clearly labeled as such. Fortunately, the phone comes with a pre-installed screen protector.
Review: Samsung’s Galaxy S10 Is The Best Smartphone You Can Buy Right Now
The S10 is among the first to ship with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855. All base Galaxy S10s come with at least 8GB of RAM, which is great.
It should come as no surprise that the S10 broke the usual benchmark trio. It scored 5,641/4,831 in 3DMark Sling Shot Extreme for OpenGL ES and Vulkan. That’s better than 90 percent of competing devices. Likewise, it scored an impressive 354718 on GeekBench. This score was also the best of 90 percent of other phones. Finally, in AnTuTu, the S10 scored 3,423 points out of 10,340 in the single-core and multi-core tests.
After an initial loss that required a factory reset, we saw the Galaxy S10 perform exceptionally well.
