The Ultra was unveiled alongside the more modest Samsung Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21 Plus, and is the tallest model available. So if you plan on picking up the device, you’re going to need a pretty bulging wallet.
With up to 16GB of RAM, 512GB of storage, a 120Hz WQHD+ display, and a 108-megapixel camera, this is Samsung’s no-compromise attempt to provide the best Android phone.
But should you be spending £1149/€1249/$1199 on a phone given that the regular S21 is so much cheaper and does the job? Here’s what we found after thoroughly testing the phone:

The price reflects that because the Galaxy S21 Ultra is designed to be a true flagship phone. The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra has a starting RRP of £1149/€1249/$1199, slightly less than the 256GB Note 20 Ultra model and more than the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
The Galaxy S21 Ultra is also available through UK and US carriers if you don’t want to buy the phone outright and prefer to pay in installments.
Of course, all non-essential stores are currently closed in the UK, so you can only buy this phone online for now.
Taking the phone out of the box, it’s immediately clear that the two notable areas where Samsung has improved compared to the previous S20 Ultra are the S21’s screen and design. Nothing was particularly weak, but the big and small changes came together to make it a device that should have been released last year when Samsung first introduced the “ultra” brand this year.

The screen, in my opinion, is the real star of the show. If you value a high-quality display above other features, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra will make a good first impression.
It’s large at 6.8 inches, has slightly curved edges, and can reach up to 1500 nits of brightness, according to Samsung. Unfortunately, due to lockdown limitations, I didn’t have a colorimeter to check these numbers, but in real-world use they performed exceptionally well. Run some HDR videos through Netflix. As a test, we used the neon-lit Altered Carbon. It’s likely small compared to other tech displays in your home, but the S21 Ultra’s screen is likely the best.
In more practical scenarios, this level of brightness eliminates the risk of outdoor visibility issues even in very sunny conditions. Even using it in direct sunlight, I had no trouble reading the screen.

It can be hard to show how much of a difference a faster refresh rate makes when you don’t have your phone in your hand, but you’ll definitely miss it when you can’t use your phone. Everything feels much faster, smoother, and far more responsive. As more and more games benefit from offering higher framerate options, the effect is all the more welcome.
The adaptive nature of the refresh rate provides an interesting benefit by increasing battery life. The idea is similar to how ProMotion works on Apple’s iPad Pro, speeding up and down the display so that energy isn’t wasted when there’s no discernible benefit.
For example, simply watching a 30fps YouTube video or a 24fps movie on Netflix has no point running at 120Hz. Adaptive refresh rates solve this problem, saving battery life in the process.
There’s a very welcome “Eye Comfort Shield” option that softens some of the bright colors and whites to make the screen appear more orange. Of course, you should turn this feature off when you want accurate colors. But in the evening and early morning, I found the screen to be much easier on the eyes.

It also appears that the S21 Ultra’s in-display fingerprint scanner is a step up from the S20 range. It’s much faster and more reliable than previous Samsung phones we’ve tested. Out of 50 unlock attempts, the S21 Ultra only ignored my thumb presses 5 times. This figure was around 15 on the Note 20 Ultra.
In situations where even the benefits of a good face unlock system are hampered by wearing a mask, having fast physical sensors is more welcome than in previous years.
My only issues with the screen are relatively minor. I still prefer completely flat to curved, as edges lead to annoying reflections and contribute to accidental presses. The default “Void” mode is too saturated for my taste, especially when displaying bright colors. The “Natural” option gives you more… um, natural, well-balanced, realistic colors. This is the setup I would recommend for most people.
It also completely ignores the video enhancement options. This is because the video is often too bright to see. Aside from these issues, this is the best screen on any phone right now.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra is arguably the best in terms of design, but you’ll have to appreciate the big phone to use this beast. It weighs 228 grams, the same as the iPhone 12 Pro Max, and with the case added it’s even heavier.
However, compared to Apple’s largest phones, the Galaxy S21 Ultra is their most portable phone. The slightly narrower, rounded sides are much more comfortable in the hand than the hard edges of the 12 Pro Max we tested last year.
The most notable change is the new camera module, which is now more of a part of the overall design of the phone rather than looking like it was slapped on the back at the last minute.
The large modules are integrated into the metal rails and stand out as a result. Combined with the new matte finish available in black or silver, you have a phone that looks futuristic without feeling shiny.

The buttons around the sides are clicky and responsive, and the little thin sides also have the requisite IP68 protection against accidental drips. Those hoping for the reintroduction of the 3.5mm headphone jack will be disappointed, there’s no microSD on the SIM tray either.
The Galaxy S21 Ultra’s camera system looks pretty intimidating at first, but it has the potential to be one of the best camera phones by the end of the year. There are tons of numbers floating around, four distinct lenses, and plenty of software features that Samsung boasts. Check out the table below for a breakdown of the specs.
Rather than following the lead of Apple and Google, where much of the camera’s work is done computationally in the background, Samsung is hoping to give it an edge in image quality by using state-of-the-art glass in its camera lenses.
For the most part, I’ve been impressed with the phone’s camera capabilities. We tested it in a variety of shooting conditions and found it to be one of the most versatile cell phone cameras out there. No other phone, including the iPhone 12 Pro Max, offers so many ways to shoot. The zoom feature is great, a noticeable improvement over the Galaxy S20, and being able to shoot video from multiple cameras at once is a nice trick I use a few times.

The primary camera is a new and improved 108MP f/1.8 sensor that combines multiple pixels to take 12MP snapshots. If you’re willing to lose some of the camera’s zooming capabilities and sacrifice more phone storage space (around 30MB per picture during testing), you can easily move to full 108MP images. It’s a pain, but if you do, I find the 108MP option is where the camera shines the brightest.
