Update Samsung Phones Images Review – The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra was one of our favorite smartphones of 2022, offering powerful performance and a great camera experience in any lighting conditions. Samsung has also added an S-Pen slot and stylus support, essentially merging the Note line with the S-series Ultra. Hardware and performance aside, it’s impressive how Samsung’s One UI has matured over the past few years.
Samsung will be unveiling the Galaxy S23 series soon, and we’re taking this opportunity to take a look at the Galaxy S22 Ultra, having been using it for a year now. Below is our quick long-term review, which highlights four key points:

Powered by Qualcomm’s flagship SoC, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra offers ultra-fast performance. Whether you’re a multitasker switching between apps or a gamer, the S22 Ultra gets the job done without lag. The thermometers could be a little better though, as the back tends to get a bit warm when the device is under heavy stress, such as continuous 4K 60fps video recording for over three minutes.

Even when playing graphics-intensive games over mobile data, the device heats up a bit, but it’s not the same on Wi-Fi. Those high-pressure scenarios aside, the combination of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC with 12GB of RAM ensures a creamy smooth experience.
Battery life is “pretty good” but could be better. Even with a juicy 5000 mAh battery, you can get a full day of use, but with moderate to heavy use, you can’t extend it. I’ve also used the Galaxy Z Fold4, which is powered by the improved Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, where the performance and efficiency gains are clearly visible, but we’ll talk about that in the Fold review in the next few weeks.
Now that the 5G network has been launched in India, I was also able to test it on Airtel where I get decent download speeds of around 500Mbps and upload speeds of around 41Mbps. Battery life hasn’t suffered hugely with 5G and can still last a full day of work.

Samsung July 2022 Update Rolling Out To Galaxy Phones
On paper, the camera setup is the same as we have on the Galaxy S21 Ultra, but the updated Image Signal Processor (ISP) in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC brings some important changes. From detailed RAW photos to a new night mode that Samsung calls Nightography to better HDR, the Snapdragon SoC, AI and Samsung’s One UI have plenty of tricks up their sleeves. All these efforts also ensured that the smartphone was ranked 135th in the DXOMARK camera ranking. With the launch of the Galaxy S23 series, we look forward to the collaboration between Qualcomm and Samsung announced at the Snapdragon Tech Summit in November 2022, which will lead to more camera-based innovations.
The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra takes great daylight shots with the 108MP main camera using the most basic settings. Focus is sharp, exposure is decent, and HDR works well even when shooting against the sun. The colors are a little saturated, but that’s okay because Samsung has always aimed for vivid colors. Below are some daylight shots.
Snapdragon SoC ISP provides good semantic segmentation. The SoC enables many other “Industry First” advanced features and we have covered them in detail in our blog. We especially liked the HDR and skin tone mapping features when clicking against the sun. Where the ISP and AI work together to deliver a balanced photo without making the subject look too fair or punching out the highlights in the background. Below are some photos, one taken with the iPhone 14 Pro and the other with the Galaxy S22 Ultra.
A large sensor with more pixels and a 9-to-1 pixel arrangement helps capture more light, resulting in well-lit images in low-light conditions. Low-light default photos look decent in auto mode, but the AI works better in low-light mode. Below are some samples.

If you like to be in control of your shots, the default camera app has a Pro mode where you can manually adjust ISO, white balance and shutter speed to suit the scene. But if that’s not enough, there’s also an Expert RAW mode where you get more control over exporting RAW images to edit and make any adjustments using apps like Adobe Lightroom or other platforms. The Galaxy S22 Ultra’s TV cameras stand out from the competition. With up to 10x optical zoom, you can get closer to your subject without losing quality. You also get 30X and 100X digital zoom. Photos taken at 30x zoom are still good for social media, while 100x photos are decent but not always usable.

Video is one area where Samsung could make significant improvements with the next Galaxy. It has all the bells and whistles like 8K 24fps, 4K 60fps video recording and more, but the smoothness and stabilization is nowhere near what you get on the iPhone.
Android 13: Which Samsung Phones Received The Update?
Starting with One UI 4.1, Samsung has also introduced some interesting features in the Gallery app, and it’s available when you’re editing photos. These include Object Eraser, which lets you delete unwanted objects from your photos. There is also a portrait effect mode where you can add background blur to your regular photos with a depth of field effect. Google made these features available to Pixel users, and it’s good to see Samsung offering similar features to its wider user base.

The camera app also has other modes, one of which is particularly interesting called Single Take. It records 5 to 15 seconds of video, and AI then analyzes the clip to select the best moments for photos. It then adds filters and portrait mode, and creates short videos from a short clip, such as boomerang, dynamic slow motion, and more. And the feature also works as expected. Samsung also has a color highlight feature in portrait mode that keeps the subject colorful while the rest of the background is defocused and monochrome. This is one of our favorite portrait mode camera effects features.
Samsung announced that the Galaxy S22 series will receive four major Android updates and five years of security updates, better than the competition. But even more impressive is the speed of the updates. We get timely security updates every month and the Android software update release was also much faster.

The smartphone shipped with Android 12 OS and One UI 4.1 on top. Soon after Google released the Android 13 source code, Samsung rushed to release the beta update and final Android 13 with One UI 5 within two months. This shows how serious Samsung is about providing the latest software and security updates ahead of the competition.
In addition to multitasking, one-touch mode, and quick app shortcuts, Samsung One UI 5 skin offers much more. First, its partnership with Microsoft allows for tighter integration, where you can save photos from your gallery directly to OneDrive. Notes saved in Samsung Notes can be synchronized with Microsoft OneNote. There’s also Link to Windows, powered by the YourPhone app, which lets you receive and even reply to calls and text messages on your Windows PC.
Samsung also offers DeX mode, both wired and wireless, where you have a desktop-like environment on your TV or monitor. Pair a wireless keyboard and mouse to use it as a computer, or you can use the Galaxy S22 Ultra screen as a touchpad. This feature also gives you access to all your phone’s apps, videos and photos to display on the big screen.
