The Samsung Ultra brand is usually reserved for devices that combine as many high-end devices as you can fit into one gadget. The Galaxy S23 Ultra starts at $1,200 and has a big, beautiful OLED screen, a new chip with better performance, an improved camera, and some upgrades. And of course, there’s a built-in S Pen for all your drawing and writing needs. So, while that sentiment still largely holds true for the new S23 Ultra, the company’s latest phone doesn’t look or perform like it did last year.

While the S23 and S23+ models got a facelift this year, the Ultra looks like a carbon copy of its predecessor – unless you look closely. You get a large 6.8-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a resolution of 3088 x 1440. And it looks stunning, even if the specs haven’t changed much from the previous model. Color is dazzling and brightness tops out at a staggering 1,750 nits, with a correct peak brightness of around 1,000 nits in my test.
The rest of the phone is a good mix of Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and Samsung’s tough Aluminum Armor. There are some minor changes to the chassis, including a slightly curved screen edge to prevent collisions. However, I never had a problem with this on last year’s phone. The frame of the S23 Ultra is also slightly flatter, making the whole thing boxier. And thanks to Samsung’s focus on the environment, small parts on the phone, such as the lock button, are made from ocean plastic. But that’s about it. So, if you’re not already familiar with the new S23 Ultra color options (which include cream, lavender, green and black), even if you look at the S22 Ultra and the S23 Ultra side by side, they’re almost impossible to spot. from each other.
The S23 Ultra is one of the first phones on the market to feature a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip. However, Samsung isn’t stopping there. It has partnered with Qualcomm to create a custom version of the processor for Galaxy phones. So how does that get you? Simple, effective and fast. During testing, the S23 Ultra posted a Geekbench 5 score that was 40% higher than last year’s phone. That’s a big jump, so it’s no surprise when I tell you that everything looks smooth – apps, games, whatever.
Now I have to say that the custom Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for the Galaxy platform that Samsung uses is only about 150 MHz higher than the stock chip, which is honestly no different than most (including me) in a normal way . is used. However, one of the biggest changes for 2023 is that all of this year’s Ultra variants will have a Snapdragon chip, so people outside of North America won’t suffer from the less powerful Exynos processor like last year. Along with the debut of the Galaxy S23 lineup, Samsung is also introducing One UI 5.1, which has some tweaks and updates. Samsung’s top phones are still unmatched when it comes to stylus support on phones, so I think there’s something new to contend with. But I have to admit that I’m having a hard time thinking about the important things I want to see next.

In normal use, the S23 Ultra uses 16-to-1 pixel binning to collect more light and produce sharp, colorful images without the need for very large files. And in many cases it produces better images too. When I used the S23 Ultra to shoot a pizza (which was delicious, I might add), photos taken in the standard 12MP mode had more color and detail than those taken with the 200MP common sensor. In the right situation, for the sensor to get full resolution, you will be able to capture the finer textures of some objects, but you need to zoom in to see them.
This is partly due to Samsung’s detection and optimization not working in 200MP mode, but there is a difference between white balance and sharpness. On the one hand, this makes sense because professional photographers often prefer images with nice colors that make post-processing easier. But it also means that unless you’re editing everything you shoot in programs like Lightroom or Photoshop, you’re better off sticking with the 12MP setting. That’s what I mean when I say you have to put in the work to get the most out of the new S23 camera, and that also applies to other products like Samsung’s Expert Raw program.

It’s a similar story when it comes to video, where the S23 Ultra’s improved OIS is a welcome addition to reduce shake and vibration while recording. But there’s a new 8K/30fps mode (up from last year’s 8K/24fps), which is nice because there’s no 2X framing like the S22 Ultra. But at the same time, who records home movies in 8K, let alone the equipment needed to watch clips in that resolution? Of course, it’s nice to be able to grow crops when you need extra parts. But that seems like overkill, especially when you consider that the file size for a two-minute 8K / 30fps video is over one gigabyte, which means you’ll run out of storage space.

At least for selfies, the phone has a new 12-megapixel camera with dual-pixel autofocus, and the photos on it look good, even if the sensor has a better resolution than the standard one.
