Editor’s note: We will continue to update the list of devices receiving Samsung’s three- and four-year refresh as more information becomes available.

Samsung increased its commitment to Android updates with the launch of the Galaxy S22 series. Fortunately, some older Galaxy flagships and other devices have also received updates from Samsung and become eligible for four years of Android software updates.

Both the Galaxy S23 and S22 series are eligible for four Android updates from Samsung. The latter was launched with Android 12, so they should get the update to Android 16. On the other hand, the S23 devices should be updated to Android 17. Below is the list of Galaxy S series that are eligible for Samsung’s update policy.

Samsung Galaxy A series phones are currently only eligible for three years of Android updates. However, the latest crop of launched Galaxy A series phones comes with the promise of four Android updates. Below are the phones that will benefit from the policy.

Samsung has promised three years of Android updates for all Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S20 models in the Galaxy S series. Unfortunately, the Galaxy S9 series is not included in this list. This means that Android 10 will be the last update for the S9 and S9 Plus, since they started with Android Oreo.

For the Galaxy S10 series, you can expect Android 12 to be the last update. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S20, S20 Plus, S20 Ultra, and S20 FE are in line to get Android 13 in the future. Below is a list of all Samsung Galaxy S series phones that are eligible for three years of Android updates.

In the Galaxy Note series, only the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 20 phones are eligible for three years of Android OS upgrades. So we don’t expect to see Android 11 on the Galaxy Note 9. Android 12 will be the last OS update for the Galaxy Note 10 series. The Galaxy Note 20 phones, like the Galaxy S20 flagship, will be eligible to receive Android 13. Below there is a list of all Samsung Galaxy Note phones that are eligible for three years of Android updates.

Apart from Samsung’s flagship phones, the company will also extend its three-year Android update policy for devices such as Galaxy Tabs, Galaxy A series phones and foldable phones. Below is a complete list.

For Galaxy devices not on this list, Samsung said it is “committed to providing the latest Android OS updates as long as the device’s hardware allows for an improved mobile experience.” Our expert, award-winning staff selects the products we cover and rigorously research them. Trying to decide whether to upgrade to Samsung’s Galaxy S23? It all depends on your budget as well as the age and current condition of your phone. You’ll also want to keep in mind that your device will support a new version of Android in the future. All of these factors are important in determining if it is the right time to switch to a new device.

This story is part of Samsung Events, a collection of news, tips and advice about Samsung’s most popular products.

The Galaxy S23, which starts at $800, has a 6.1-inch screen and a 50-megapixel camera, just like the Galaxy S22. But the S23 has a bigger battery, a new processor and slightly updated camera algorithms that improve the way it processes images. While these changes are appreciated, the Galaxy S23 is overall a slight improvement over the Galaxy S22. An upgrade is worth it if you’re looking to replace a phone you’ve had for a few years, ideally over two years. Even the Galaxy S21, launched in 2021, will likely have enough life to see out another year.

Buying decisions are always different depending on your needs and budget. But if you’re an existing Samsung user considering making the jump, here’s how the Galaxy S23 compares to previous devices.

With the Galaxy S23, Samsung has addressed one of my biggest concerns about the Galaxy S22: its short battery life. The new phone has a bigger battery (3,700 versus 3,900 mAh), which made a difference in my testing.

Otherwise, compared to the Galaxy S22, you get a new processor called ‘Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor’ which is specially optimized for the new Galaxy line, while the Galaxy S22 uses a ‘Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip’ last year. The performance is very fast, especially when exporting videos. But you probably won’t notice much speed in daily use, as most modern processors are well equipped to handle games, multitasking and other running tasks.

The Galaxy S23 cameras are mostly the same as the Galaxy S22, except the algorithms have been updated to improve processing in low light conditions. The selfie camera also has a slightly higher resolution (12 megapixels vs. 10), although I didn’t notice much of a difference. Nothing about the Galaxy S23’s camera feels very different from the previous generation, although I did get some low-light photos that looked good.

The phone launches with Android 13 and Samsung’s One UI 5.1 software, both available for the Galaxy S22 series.

Bottom line: If you have a Galaxy S22, don’t upgrade to the Galaxy S23. The changes are not noticeable enough to warrant an update. Battery life is the only meaningful difference you’ll notice between the two phones, but I’d only recommend upgrading if you can get the S23 for free on a trade-in deal.

The difference between the Galaxy S23 and the Galaxy S21 is more noticeable, but you can probably keep your S21 for another year before upgrading.

The Galaxy S23 has a much better camera as it will inherit the 50-megapixel sensor that appeared in the Galaxy S22. As I wrote in my review, the Galaxy S22’s cameras offer better color, contrast, and low-light performance than the Galaxy S21.

The Galaxy S21 also runs on a processor that is two years older than the new Galaxy S23 chip. That said, if you’re only using your phone for simple tasks like video calls, playing games and checking social media, the larger Snapdragon 888 chip is probably fine.

Bottom line: If the Galaxy S21 still feels sharp and the battery life is satisfactory, you can wait another year before upgrading. Samsung supports three generations of Android operating system updates for the Galaxy S21, meaning it will receive software updates for the new device until 2024.

The answer to whether you should upgrade from the Galaxy S20 isn’t straightforward. There’s enough available to justify the leap, but the Galaxy S20 still has a lot to offer.

With the upgrade, you’ll get a better camera with a faster sensor, better low-light performance and a new design. Since the Galaxy S20 was launched with Android 10 in 2020, it will not be eligible for the new Android OS update.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Review: More Phone Than You Need

Samsung is committed to delivering three generations of updates to the Galaxy S20 lineup, with Android 13 being the latest. This means you need to update to get future versions of Android and the new features that come with them.
