Update Samsung M51 Full Specification Review – Another day and another Galaxy M series phone launched by Samsung. By my reckoning, we’re now looking at the sixth phone in the series this year, and with each model, the line between budget and mid-range seems to be blurring a bit. The Galaxy M series started out as a budget solution to compete with Chinese rivals, but it now overlaps with the more premium Galaxy A series in terms of price, making Samsung’s lineup a bit confusing. However, the company has aimed to retain the core values of the M series, such as solid build quality and a huge battery. In fact, the Galaxy M51 is the first smartphone in India to have a battery rated at no less than 7,000 mAh.
Samsung announced the Galaxy M51 last week at a starting price of Rs 24,999, which puts it in the territory of OnePlus Nord ( review ), Redmi K20 Pro ( review ) and Realme X3. The device also competes with the Galaxy A51 (review) and Galaxy M31s (review). With plenty of options to choose from, the Galaxy M51 has a point to prove it can punch above its weight class. Let’s find out in this full review if the M51 managed to do that.

What you get with the Galaxy M51 is exceptionally good battery life, unlike any phone it can offer at its price point. On the flip side, you get decent performance, cameras and a wide display as well. A casual user will be quite satisfied with the M51 as a daily driver, but for a more performance-minded audience, the Realme X3 or the OnePlus Nord might be more suitable.
Samsung Galaxy M51 Review: The Battery That Doesn’t Wanna Die
The Galaxy M51 is probably the biggest M series phone we’ve seen so far, and understandably the heaviest. It’s not every day you get to experience a phone with a 7,000mAh battery, but I’m really impressed with how Samsung has kept the thickness of the M51 to around 9mm. Also at 213g, the M51 can be a little heavy in the hand, but it still has a comfortable grip thanks to the curved back panel, which is a smartphone staple these days. The body is made of polycarbonate “glass” material, which makes the device prone to scratches. However, the M51 does not come with a transparent silicone case, which is a disappointment.
There’s a fingerprint sensor on the right side of the phone that doubles as a home button, and that’s a feature that’s made it to many smartphones lately. I really like this position because it is in a perfect place for the thumb. For left-handed users, the index finger should reach the sensor easily. The volume rocker buttons are present alongside the sensor, and at the bottom you’ll find a Type-C port, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a single speaker grill. The dual-SIM plus microSD card slot is present on the right side of the device. Samsung gave me the Charcoal Black color variant to review, but I have to say it looks closer to a silver-grey color that can very conveniently function as a part-time mirror due to its highly polished finish . I like a glossy look, but I prefer the kind of matte-like finish used on the OnePlus Nord, which makes it easier to take product photos and also avoids a lot of smudges.
The 6.7-inch Super AMOLED panel provides an immersive viewing experience on the Galaxy M51, and between the huge screen size and the heavy-duty design, you won’t be holding the phone with one hand for very long. This is an Infinity-O panel, which is Samsung’s terminology for a punch-hole display. Other highlights include an FHD+ resolution, a maximum brightness of 420 nits and a 20:9 aspect ratio. Samsung has long perfected the art of a capable display, be it in any category of smartphone and it seeps into the M51 as well.
There will be hardly any difference between the display quality of the M31s and the M51 except for the screen size. The M51 panel has all the benefits of being an AMOLED, such as perfect viewing angles, near-zero color shift, deep blacks, and generally better color reproduction than an LCD panel. Customization options include changing color temperatures from vibrant vivid mode to a more realistic but slightly dull normal mode. You also have the option to change the theme to dark mode and also use a blue light filter. All in all, a complete display, grade A with no complaints other than missing out on a high refresh rate. In terms of protection, the M51 has the older Corning Gorilla 3 to prevent screen damage.

The Galaxy M51 packs the same quad-camera hardware present on the M31 models announced a few months ago. There is a 64MP Sony IMX682 sensor with a 12MP ultra-wide lens along with dual 5MP cameras for depth sensing and macro photography. While the hardware remains the same, what has changed is the new ISP found on the M51’s Snapdragon 730G SoC rather than the Exynos 9611 SoC. There is a slight but noticeable change in picture quality.
The main sensor on the M31s delivers sharp, contrasty pictures. On the M51, pictures are slightly more detailed and the saturation level is lowered for a more natural landscape colour. Apart from that, autofocus on the M51 is almost instantaneous, which is quite nice to see, especially when shooting video. Overall, the sensor lets in a lot of light and also has excellent HDR capabilities, which can be enhanced by automatic AI scene detection. To get extra details in a photo, you can use the UHD 64MP mode.
Other than that, the ultra-wide, depth and macro sensors produced photos similar to the M31s. The 123-degree field of view gets most of the subject in the frame, but has the usual distortion at the edges. Portrait mode, or as Samsung calls it, Live Focus, works well with the dedicated depth camera, but the familiar issues of correctly detecting edges around the subject have not yet been resolved. The macro sensor isn’t much use and when called upon it doesn’t live up to its full potential. We would hardly call the photos from the macro sensor “social media worthy”. At night, the camera will use AI scene detection to automatically get more light in your photos. The dedicated Night Mode brings more clarity to your photos, fills in colors more accurately and generally sharpens focus on your subject. I stand by my statement of getting your money’s worth in night photography with the M51 as I said for the M31.
There’s a 32MP selfie shooter up front, and it works as well as you’d expect. As with the M31s, you’ll find pixel binning to get detailed 8MP photos, or you can shoot directly in 32MP, although there seems to be very little difference between the two modes. Samsung again uses a lot of over-sharpening of facial details, but I’m happy with the color selection it uses in the skin tones. It also has 4K video recording on the front of the phone, something very few phones at this price can do.

Samsung ditched the Exynos 9611 (used in the Galaxy M31s, M31, M21, A51, M30s, A50s) and went with the reliable Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G. Now it’s pretty clear that for its price range and seeing what the competition is offering, the Galaxy M51 isn’t winning any awards in terms of processing power. The OnePlus Nord offers the newer Snapdragon 765G SoC, which, among other things, is also ready for 5G, while the Realme X3 has last year’s flagship Snapdragon 855+ SoC. Benchmark results indicate the same, with the M51 scoring lower in all traditional tests such as Geekbench, AnTuTu and PCMark compared to the Nord or X3 Superzoom. However, this is a comparison made for power users who want to do intensive tasks like heavy gaming or video editing on their smartphone.
The Galaxy M51 happens to be great at multitasking, browsing, browsing, and overall usage is smooth and fast. This is evident when heavy apps like YouTube or Instagram are open in the background, and switching between them is almost seamless. There is no delay in camera shutter speed or image processing in the Gallery app. I have the 8GB RAM + 128GB version with me, although I would recommend the 6GB version of the device which retails at Rs 24,999.
