I’m still embarrassed that you can buy a £245 smartphone with a vibrant AMOLED display and two days of battery life. For anyone who brings content to their phone, the Samsung Galaxy M31 is an absolute bargain, just don’t expect it to impress in other areas.
Samsung A range of smartphones are a staple sight in most UK stores, and for good reason. It is intended to attract the same large media audience that is currently highlighted by Xiaomi and OnePlus. However, the Galaxy M series is far less recognizable, even though it is half of Samsung’s global production line.

Hugely popular in India, the Galaxy M smartphones are trying to pack an affordable model — at least on paper. The range recently got a major overhaul for 2020, and one of those phones – the Samsung Galaxy M31 – has made its way to the UK market.
The Galaxy Series has done a pretty decent job with the mid-range, but can Samsung pull the same trick again just down the price scale? It’s like a time out.
At 159.2 x 75.1 x 8.9 mm and 191 g, the Galaxy M31 is a hefty phone by modern standards. Recently used to the lightweight nature of the Pixel 3a XL, the M31 felt like a mammoth by comparison. But with the added weight comes a sense of gravity that tells you this is a solid product, even if it’s at the affordable end of the spectrum.
Within this space, the phone has a 6.4-inch display, with a notch with a minimal chin bezel at the bottom. At just £245, I wonder how sharp the phone’s front elements are. There is also a 3.5 mm headphone jack (albeit on the bottom).

When you first turn on the phone, things start to feel a little different. First, the plastic back of the M31 is an absolute fingerprint magnet, and the smooth armor itself doesn’t hold your hands very well. Unless you’re completely confident in your infallible ability to never drop your phone, we recommend reading the case just to be safe.
While the camera is a small bump here, the four camera sensors are barely noticeable whether the phone is in your pocket or not, the screen is on the desk.
Like the series, Samsung’s marketing for the M series has highlighted three core features: display, camera and battery life. While we’ll get to the latter two in a moment, I’m happy to report that Samsung nailed it with the display on the M31, arguably the phone’s best feature (at the price point).
The aforementioned 6.4-inch screen uses an elegant AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2340 x 1080, ensuring that whatever is on the screen, be it a page or a second view of The Last Dance on Netflix (respectively), always pops up.

Of course, even with FHD+ top resolution, there is nothing getting around this, because if you want to immerse yourself in the full experience, you will have to deal with a notch that cuts into the action. Granted, it’s small compared to the likes of Apple’s now seriously outdated shelves, but it’s still there.
The only other minor problem is that, unlike the new Moto G 5G Plus, it has a basic 60Hz display. But since few phones at this price have made the leap to 90Hz at the moment, the omission is forgivable.
After using it with the Pixel 3a XL, it’s a clean and almost flawless version of Android 10. The custom Samsung skin feels very clunky, although it’s not the worst out there.
For example, there’s very little bloat aside from Samsung’s own selection of apps that tend to be of their own use, though why I’d ever need to use a Galaxy with Google’s App Store is beyond me.

Fortunately for the M31, it does almost everything well despite its reasonable price. This is down to the Samsung Exynos 9611 SoC processor and 6GB of solid RAM under the hood. Don’t expect mind-blowing excitement with the M31, but this setup delivers decent performance where it delivers.
For example, the dedicated fingerprint sensor is fast and reliable (arguably more so than some of the in-display fingerprint sensors I’ve found on more expensive phones). The same goes for face unlock, with a great little animation that happens under the front camera to let you know it’s doing its thing.
However, the most persistently annoying problem that kept coming up was the inexplicable incompatibility with some portable devices. Although this seems to have happened, after a few software updates, initially the phone would periodically drop the connection with the Whoop 3.0 Band and the TicWatch C2 Plus. If you’re not a scouting fan, you’ll probably never see this event, but for a fitness fanatic like me who loves to follow health stats, it’s become a real pain.
If you enjoy mobile games on your lunch break, the M31 has you covered with most titles – just don’t expect to be running Fortnite on it anytime soon. As the launch clearly shows, the Galaxy M31 is not one of the phones currently optimized to play Fortnite, and the game reveals a choppy, barely playable mess. Surprisingly, though, the M31 had no problem running online matches in Call of Duty: Mobile, and performed well in smaller titles like Alto’s Odyssey.
