I’m still shocked that you can buy a £245 phone with a fantastic AMOLED screen and two day battery life. For anyone who watches content on their phone, the Samsung Galaxy M31 is a perfect value, don’t expect to like it in other areas.

Samsung’s A-series of smartphones are a staple in many UK stores, and for good reason. It aims to attract a large crowd among those who are currently watching Xiaomi and OnePlus. And yet, the Galaxy M series is less well-known, despite being a key part of Samsung’s global heritage.

Hugely popular in India, the Galaxy M smartphone attempts to bring premium specifications in an accessible form – at least that’s what it looks like on paper. The series recently received a major update for 2020, and one of these phones – the Samsung Galaxy M31 – made its way to the UK market.
The Galaxy A series did a great job in the mid-range, but could Samsung use the same trick again, at a lower price point? It’s time to find out.
Measuring 159.2 x 75.1 x 8.9mm and weighing in at 191g, the Galaxy M31 is a solid phone by modern standards. It was recently used in the lightweight form of the Pixel 3a XL, the M31 looks like a mammoth in comparison. And with that extra weight comes a sense of heaviness that lets you know it’s still a solid product, even if it’s at the more expensive end of the spectrum.
Inside the slot, the phone sports a 6.4-inch screen, with a teardrop notch and a small chin bezel at the bottom. For just £245, I was surprised how intact the phone’s front-end features are. There’s even a 3.5mm headphone jack (albeit on the bottom).

However, once you turn the phone over, things start to look a little different. For starters, the M31’s plastic backing is a complete fingerprint magnet, and the soft cover itself doesn’t grip well. Unless you’re sure you can’t keep your phone, we recommend getting a case to be on the safe side.
Although there is a bit of a camera hit here, the camera’s four sensor system is barely visible whether the phone is in your pocket or placed with the screen facing the table.
As with the A series, Samsung’s marketing for the M series focused on three features: screen, camera, and battery life. Although we will get to the last two in a moment, I am happy to say that Samsung has nailed it on the screen in the M31, arguing that it is the best feature of the phone (besides the price).
The 6.4 inch screen of the previously mentioned monster uses a bright AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2340 x 1080, so that everything on the screen, whether it is the background of the homepage or the second review of The Last Dance on Netflix (respect), always appears.

Of course, even with such a high FHD +, there is nothing you can see and if you want to go into full screen mode, you have to make the level work. Of course, it is small compared to the old shelves of Apple, but it is still there.
The only other minor gripe is that, unlike the new Moto G 5G Plus, it has a basic 60Hz screen. But considering how few phones at this price point up to 90Hz now, it’s an excuse.
Already running the Pixel 3a XL with a flawless version of Android 10 in the near future. Samsung’s custom skin feels great, even if it’s not the worst.
For example, there is little bloatware other than the various Samsung apps that have their uses, although why I would use the Galaxy Store when the Google App Store is there is beyond me.

However, luckily for the M31, everything works well despite the low price. That’s down to the Samsung Exynos 9611 SoC and 6GB of RAM solid under the hood. Don’t expect it to run through the M31, but this configuration leads to excellent performance where it matters.
For example, the dedicated fingerprint sensor is faster and more reliable (probably better than some of the fingerprint sensors I’ve found on more expensive phones). The same goes for face unlock, with a little indicator that pops up under the front camera to let you know it’s doing its thing.
An annoying issue that keeps coming up, however, is the lack of compatibility with some wearables. Although this seems to have stopped after a few software updates, the phone initially stopped connecting regularly with the Whoop 3.0 Band smartwatch and the TicWatch C2 Plus. If you’re not a smartwatch fan, you probably won’t run into this issue, but for a fitness enthusiast like me who loves keeping track of health stats, it’s become a real pain in the ass.
If you like to play mobile games on your lunch break, the M31 should handle most titles – just don’t expect to be running Fortnite on it anytime soon. As the publisher continues to show, the Galaxy M31 is not the same phone designed for Fornite at the moment, and entering the game presents a terrible mess, which cannot be played. Surprisingly, the M31 had no problem running online on Call of Duty: Mobile, with smaller titles like Alto’s Odyssey doing well.

I blame it on the fact that my old laptop has a bit of a crappy Wi-Fi connection, but with this new work-from-home setup, I decided to use my phone as my primary device for making calls, listening to music, tracking my workout at home, and watching YouTube during lunch. Suffice it to say, I put the battery in the Galaxy M31 through its paces, but it struggled horribly.
Using a heavy 6,000mAh battery, the Galaxy M31 managed to hit about the end of two days on a single charge, although it was connected to Wi-Fi most of the time, working with Bluetooth and several wearables, and a pair of wireless headphones turned on just in case. This is in addition to the hard work I mentioned earlier. Simply put, you must be too much of a procrastinator to even think about draining your battery completely in one day.
The Galaxy M31 features multi-day battery life that’s not out of the world, but if you plan to use the M31 as your primary media device, the phone’s impressive battery life and AMOLED screen make for a match made in heaven. You can immerse yourself in the content on this topic for hours.
The only disappointment is the supposed 15W fast charging input, which I beg to differ. Plugged into a power outlet, it took more than two hours to fully charge by 8%. If charging your phone overnight is part of your routine, you won’t have a problem, but needing a quick charge before leaving home is out of the question.

On paper, the promise of a Samsung smartphone with four rear cameras for less than £250 sounds too good to be true, and unfortunately it is. On the back, you get a 64-megapixel f/1.8 main sensor, an 8-megapixel f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle sensor, a 5-megapixel f/2.2 depth sensor, and everyone’s favorite 5-megapixel f/2.4 macro camera.
Just kidding, of course, I don’t share the same disdain for making macro cameras on smartphones as other critics, and it’s fun to take artistic photos of bugs or flowers from time to time, but let’s face it, the real meat and potatoes are the big camera and the big camera.
Starting with the latter, I was surprised to see how clear photos can be with the M31’s main sensor. The image of my fiancée below, for example, has a natural-looking bokeh effect, and bright colors without looking saturated.
It’s only when you start zooming in on portraits that you realize the camera can’t capture the best detail, a problem that becomes more apparent when you switch to the M31’s ultra wide-angle lens.

Stepping into the corners of the wide-angle bells used with the M31 reveals a distinct lack of detail. I understand the appeal of wanting a wide-angle sensor, but if it’s just going to do a poor job, I’d rather see the money invested in upgrading the main sensor. In comparison, the Pixel 3a only has one rear-facing sensor, but it benefits from being one of the best phones for photography.
