Update Samsung M31 Launch Price Review

Update Samsung M31 Launch Price Review – Samsung launched its new M series phones in Nepal a few weeks ago. Among them, the Samsung M31 comes as an upgrade to the Samsung M30 and M30s.

I have been using this device for over 3 weeks now and I have already given my early impressions of this device. Watch it first if you want. This is the follow-up to my early impression and includes a detailed review of the M31.

Samsung Galaxy M31 uses a plastic body and has a glossy finish on the back. On the front, it has an AMOLED display with a waterdrop notch.

The plastic construction is made to look like glass with the finish, but it sure doesn’t look that way.

This particular review unit received scratches on the back panel during my handling, but it is only visible upon inspection. So, I recommend you to use the case.

At the rear is a quad camera setup with a rectangular camera module along with the oval fingerprint sensor. The sides curve into the frame and the edges are also curved.

On the front, the side bezels are slim but the chin is still prominent. The buttons are on the right side, while there is a tray for two sims and a micro SD.

At the bottom we get a headphone jack, a USB Type C port, a microphone and a speaker. While there is another microphone on top. Also, the ear piece is well placed right on top of the notch.

Although the plastic construction does not look premium. It feels strong and solid. But it is prone to scratches. So, I would like a glass back that we see similar to Redmi Note 8 Pro.

Ergonomically, I like how it fits in the hand. It is not slippery and I can use it with my hand. But it is not very easy to use with one hand. You have to get used to it.

The Samsung Galaxy M31 has a 6.4 inch 1080×2340 (FHD+) AMOLED display. It’s a 60Hz panel with deep blacks and impressive color reproduction.

According to my first impression, everything remains the same. The color is vivid and the contrast ratio is high. It’s perfect for YouTube, Netflix and playing games.

The screen is impressive for media consumption. But it is not so bright under harsh sunlight. If you want to take photos or watch content under harsh sunlight, you will find it a bit difficult.

The Always On Screen is as usual. You can customize it on several levels. You can also choose different color modes for display. If you like a more natural sound, you can choose the natural mode, or else you can go with the live mode. You can also adjust the heat and make the color temperature darker or warmer.

To be honest, I’ve never been a big fan of high megapixel sensors. I think it’s great and all for capturing high detail but I don’t find it really useful. After all, photos from our smartphones only end up on social networks.

So, what we get with the Samsung Galaxy M31 is a main sensor of 64MP with a pixel size of 0.8μm. It is a relatively large sensor which helps the sensor capture more light. Overall, the Samsung Galaxy M31 takes pleasant photos. But, in typical Samsung fashion, it still retains similar camera processing from the other mid-range Samsung phones.

The 16MP images of the Samsung Galaxy M31 are very sharp, and the image processing favors high contrast and saturation. The white balance is not necessarily the most accurate, and it tends to choose one that can show the colors in the scene.

The images have the lowest ISO of 20, so it’s HDR is very admirable. It manages to preserve details in dark parts without blowing out the lighter areas. I like the brightness of the bound images, it’s a bit brighter than normal but it helps the image stand out.

Moving on to its 64MP images, they obviously have more details. Looking at the images side by side, it’s clear that the 48MP images have more detail. However, the images look flatter than the rendered 16MP images, the color is deeper and more natural. And it doesn’t sharpen the image as much as it does with 16MP images. Even 48MP images have the lowest ISO of 40 and I think it’s done to balance the unavailability of HDR.

To be fair, I prefer the included 16MP images as they stand out with bursting color and contrast. Also, the 16MP images have a higher dynamic range and better exposure.

But, it will come down to personal preference and you may want to use 48MP images if you want to adjust anything in post processing. However, most of us won’t bother with that, so it’s better to stick with 16MP images most of the time.

So, how is night mode? Well, it’s good. The first thing you should notice is that normal pictures taken in dark conditions do not have good details and it is noisy. If taken late at night, the pictures may even look like it is out of focus. But the night mode helps in this case. It reduces noise and makes the image more attractive.

Images taken with night mode are sharpened and have better exposure. But still, low light images of the M31 are not so good. However, I would recommend using night mode more often than not. Ultra Wide Angle Goodness Click to view the slideshow.

For the ultra-wide-angle camera, the M31’s 8MP sensor is the same as the M30’s 8MP sensor. Although I would have liked a 12MP sensor, the 8MP sensor is good enough during daylight. Ultra-wide images maintain the same color profile as that of the main high-contrast sensor.

The images look pretty sharp, but you’ll notice some noise around the edges. Also, it doesn’t work as well as the main sensor when it gets dark. But this happens in all phones.

Now, speaking of the portrait photos, I am impressed. Well, I don’t have many samples because I haven’t met many people because of the pandemic. But I’ve been impressed with what I’ve seen so far.

The depth effect doesn’t look artificial and I tend to pay attention to that the most in portrait photos. In advance the edge detection is pretty good but of course it’s not perfect. It cut off some parts of my hair, but it did quite well with the glasses. I am very happy with the results.

Last but not least, it also has a 5MP macro sensor and it’s a good one. You mostly get 2MP macro sensors with other phones like the M31 in this category, so that extra detail makes pictures more appealing. But the color profile is different from the main sensor, it is dark and does not look vibrant. Check out the swatches below!

Now to the front camera, I love it. The 32MP sensor takes some good photos with nice contrast. The details are also good and the HDR works really well. Your selfies will not be blown out even if there is a lot of light in the background.

Now, live focus selfies are not so good. Edge detection is not very good. It had a very hard time with my hair. And, the blur effect also looks artificial. But I like how the HDR was still able to keep the highlights under control.

Samsung M31 supports 4k video recording but there is no 60fps option even in 1080p. 4k videos are clear with good details, but you lose digital stabilization at 4k, resulting in shaky videos. The stabilization improves a lot when you drop to 1080p, but you lose small details at 1080p.

The digital stabilization isn’t that impressive, you’ll see a bit of distortion as it tries to stabilize the footage. Now it has a great stabilization feature at 1080p, but what it does is it actually captures video from the wide angle camera and crops it a bit to give you stabilized videos.

Samsung Galaxy M31 has the same chipset as the Samsung M30s; Exynos 9611. But it has an option for a larger 8GB RAM because it comes in two configurations: 6/128GB and 8/128GB.

Exynos 9611 is a good chipset but it is not the best performer in its price range as I mentioned in my initial impression. It is made in the 10nm process and has Octa-core (4 × 2.3 GHz Cortex-A73 & 4 × 1.7 GHz Cortex-A53) CPU along with Mali-G72 MP3 GPU.

After my initial impression, I ran some benchmarks and played more games to test its real performance. First, let’s look at the benchmarks.

Samsung Galaxy M53: A Lightweight Phone With One Big Flaw

Starting with GeekBench, a CPU benchmark. Exynos 9611 on the M31 performs very well with a single-core score of 347 and a multi-core score of 1288. We compared it with Snapdragon 720G (Redmi Note 9 Pro), Snapdragon 665 (Realme 5i) and Snapdragon 675 (Redmi) . Note 7 Pro).

According to this benchmark, the Exynos 9611 on the Samsung M31 is right between the Snapdragon 665 and 675 in terms of performance. However, Redmi Note 9 Pro is way ahead.
