As mentioned, the Samsung Galaxy M31 comes with a familiar design. It’s very similar to the Galaxy M30s in that it has a plastic unibody panel on the back with a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor and a square-shaped camera module in the top-left corner. While the plastic material helps keep the phone light (despite the massive battery), it doesn’t make it look as attractive compared to glass phones like the Redmi Note 8 Pro (Review).
The front of the Samsung Galaxy M31 is also familiar as a 6.4-inch Full HD+ (2,340 x 1,080) Super AMOLED Infinity-U display greets you like its predecessors. Above the display is a U-shaped notch that houses the selfie camera and a chunky chin.
The Samsung Galaxy M31 is a thick phone and feels a bit heavy in the hand, so it gets tiring to hold after a while. The phone is available in Blue, Black and Red color variants. The glossy back panel makes the Galaxy M31 a fingerprint and smudge magnet, which is quite noticeable on the black variant we received for review. Also, the back panel attracts scratches if you put it on a desk or in your pocket with some keys.
The volume and power buttons are on the right side of the frame, and are not always easy to reach with one hand. At the bottom of the bezel is a Type-C port, a 3.5mm headphone jack and a single set of speakers. On the left side of the bezel is a card slot that can hold two nano SIM cards and a microSD card.

Samsung makes attractive displays, so it’s understandable that the company didn’t feel the need to make any changes here. The 6.4-inch Super AMOLED display looks stunning with bright, saturated colors and excellent viewing angles. The screen offers good brightness levels, so you won’t have any trouble reading the screen under sunlight. The FHD+ display is sharp and delivers clear video content in 1080p resolution. With Widevine L1 support, the Galaxy M31 can stream content on Netflix and Amazon Prime in full HD resolution.
The biggest upgrade to the Galaxy M31 is the cameras. The phone sports a 64MP quad camera setup, unlike the Galaxy M30s’ 48MP triple camera setup. The new setup includes a high-resolution 64MP f/1.8 Samsung GW1 main sensor, an 8MP wide-angle lens, a 5MP depth camera and a 5MP macro lens. The updated setup is more versatile, giving users more ways to take pictures.
The Galaxy M31’s main camera takes good photos during the day. With Scene Optimizer enabled, the camera uses a lot of software processing to enhance the colors you prefer over more natural tones. So if you’re painting flowers, for example, the greens will be greener and the roses may turn red. Photos are warmer, meaning you won’t be able to capture natural white tones. Overall, I found daylight photos lacking in contrast and dynamic range compared to the Redmi Note 8 Pro in this segment.
The main camera is capable of focusing on a subject quickly in daylight, but it shakes a little when the sun goes down. By default, the main camera shoots at 16MP and uses pixel binning to deliver brighter, sharper photos. You can manually change the aspect ratio from 3:4 to 64MP for high resolution photos. However, 64MP photos will be darker, have no HDR support and should only be used in daylight if you want to capture a wide landscape to enlarge later.

From the main camera onwards, the Samsung Galaxy M31’s 8MP wide-angle lens manages to capture nice wide-angle shots in daylight. Colors look good and there’s enough detail, as long as you don’t zoom in and touch pixels. Portrait mode can capture some bokeh shots using Live Focus mode, if the blur effect isn’t extreme please. Skin tones look warm and soft, but there is good detail.
Finally, we have a 5MP macro camera that can get up to 3cm from the subject. Again, best used in daylight, the macro camera allows for creative close-ups. Macros can be simple and to the point, as long as the theme is not. Colors, however, tend to be muted and transparent compared to the natural bokeh that can be captured with the main camera.
The Galaxy M31 is pretty good at recording videos. Both front and rear cameras can record UHD videos. The main camera also supports Super Steady mode, which works quite well
