But having thoroughly used the limited device, I can confirm that it ticks all the important boxes for most people. This more wallet-friendly price makes it a great smartphone.

The S21 is the lowest entry point in Samsung’s flagship line and comes with some major changes from last year’s Galaxy S20. The expandable storage is gone, you have to make do with the plastic back, and the screen resolution only reaches FHD+. On top of that, you’ll have to shell out extra for your charger and headphones – kudos to the iPhone 12 for setting that precedent last year.
Still, there’s a lot to admire and the Galaxy S21 is sure to be one of the best Android devices of the year, with a slew of camera additions and a strong focus on offering buyers a unique new design and lower-than-expected price. tag

You can pre-order any version of the Samsung Galaxy S21 now, when the devices hit shelves on January 29. Samsung Galaxy S21 prices start at £769 €849/$799. This is a slight cut on the outgoing Galaxy S20 which started at £899 for the 5G model. The Samsung S21 Plus will be priced from £949/€1049/$999.

Both the Galaxy S21 and S21 Plus will be widely available through UK and US network carriers and major sites like Amazon. Of course, with all unnecessary stores now closed in the UK, you’ll only be able to get these phones. .
This is the first time we’ve seen Samsung unveil its flagship smartphone, which had a general release in March. But, as the pandemic continues to affect the world, it looks like this year could be a lot different overall.
Samsung has made some cuts to the Galaxy S21 that make it feel less “flagship” than previous Samsung flagship phones. Whether this is a blessing or a curse will depend on your personal expectations, but overall I think the move was the right one as it allowed Samsung to lower the phone’s RPP.
There were two major cuts with many other smaller pieces. The biggest one, especially for those who still want to make this a high-end flagship phone, is the drop in maximum screen resolution. Specifically, Samsung downgraded it from WQHD+ to FHD+, essentially 1440p to 1080p. While yes, you can – if you’re really looking for it – notice the difference, it’s not a big deal for me on a 6.2 inch panel.

That’s mainly because the rest of the display is excellent. It’s OLED, super bright, still very sharp, and has a friendly refresh rate of 48Hz and down to 120Hz. This is a big improvement over the 120Hz panel on the S20 because it doesn’t waste power when you wouldn’t benefit from faster, smoother motion.
The benefit of 120Hz monitors is hard to overstate because it’s something that needs to be appreciated. But when actually using it, you’ll notice it everywhere, from scrolling through Twitter to playing PUBG Mobile. Coming from the iPhone 12 to the S21, I hate that Apple decided not to implement this technology in its latest phone, as the S21 feels smoother and more responsive in everyday use.
For the first time in years for an S-series phone, the screen here is completely flat. Finally! I love flat screens, and that’s one of the reasons I’m drawn to the iPhone 12. This means the S21 is much easier to hold and generally feels a lot less fragile. Of all the features lost for the S21, the lack of a curved screen outweighs the cons for me.
The other big difference between the S21 and the outgoing Galaxy S20 is the switch to a plastic back instead of glass. At first I was torn about it because I’ve always felt that glass feels more premium than plastic, but after using the Galaxy S21 for a week, I think the change is fine and most people won’t be bothered by the material. Change plastic is fairly stiff, not flexible.
Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus Review: Very Good, But (still) A Bit Too Expensive
The only downside is that the phone doesn’t feel as expensive as previous S-series phones. Its finish is similar to the Galaxy S20 FE rather than the flagship S20. It’s light, but doesn’t have the satisfying heavy finish you get with glass. Even with the matte finish the back gets greasy stains, which is annoying for a neat person like me.
While the back is plastic, the S21 still has a Gorilla Glass Victus screen and metal rails. The S21 Plus opts for an all-glass design, so it’s the choice if you prefer a more luxurious finish.
The camera module is now a part of the design. It sits on the top left side of the phone, sitting on the edge of the device. I wasn’t sure about the change at first, but I grew to like the design. Many phones just stick a large camera module on the back and design around it, making it feel like a cohesive unit.
Samsung also strays a bit from the book with its two-tone color options. The headline-grabbing “Phantom Violet” model combines a light purple color with rose-gold accents, which works well. There’s also a gold option, along with more modest white and black options. If you are chubby for a plus, money will also be an option.

Another downside is microSD card expandability. This happened once with the S series and was quickly brought back the following year, so it seems like another strange move, especially when you’re shooting 8K video as the maximum 256GB storage option fills up pretty quickly. At least we still have an IP68 rating for a bit of water resistance and a stereo speaker.
Samsung hasn’t stuck the Galaxy S21 with its own chipset this year, but you’ll still get the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 (US) or Exynos 2100 (UK and other European regions).
You have the same larger and more reliable in-display fingerprint sensor as the S21 Ultra. This may seem like a small detail, but now that wearing a mask is so commonplace, I feel like phones that focus on Face Unlock (mainly the iPhone 12) feel disconnected and a pain to use outside right now.
Samsung Galaxy S21 is a fast phone. I used the Exynos 2100 version, which is a significant step up from the previous Exynos chipset – at least after a week of testing. The new chip shares the same Samsung design as the older model used in the S20. This time, however, it has a new GPU, with the Exynos using the Mali G78 and the Snapdragon 888 using the Adreno 660. We’ll have to get the Snapdragon version to compare performance in that regard, but I haven’t had any issues with gaming performance here.

It’s the current high-end chipset from both companies, and the Galaxy S21 is one of the first phones to use it. Like Apple’s A14, both are built on the highly efficient 5nm process, which is the main reason it offers improved battery life compared to the S20 for the non-techie.
Barring some minor bugs in Samsung’s OneUI software, the Galaxy S21 is very fast. You won’t notice it every day if you’re coming from a 2020 or 2019 phone, but prepare to be impressed if you’re upgrading from an S8 or S9.
That’s not to say that advancing the technology under the hood is a waste of time. Many of the advantages of these new chips are in areas like AI, for example, giving you faster photo enhancements.
It also does clever camera tricks, such as the ability to view live video from all cameras simultaneously and record 4K60 footage from different sensors simultaneously.

Samsung stuck with 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of non-expandable storage. 8GB of RAM is fine for me and I didn’t suffer from multitasking issues, however with 8K video taking up about 1GB per 120 seconds and game sizes increasing all the time, you’re probably better off paying a little more up front and getting it. High storage options.
