Samsung’s best phone, the Galaxy S23 Ultra, offers massive performance and incredible photography capabilities. But it also comes with a price tag of $1,200 (£1,249, AU$1,949), which is just out of the question for many of us. Looking below the Samsung line doesn’t mean suffering through slow and frustrating hardware. As Samsung’s new $450 (£499, AU$699) Galaxy A54 5G proves, you can get a solid performance phone for a very reasonable price.

Samsung Galaxy M20: Samsung Galaxy M20 Review: No Competitor With Similar Specifications At This Price Range

The Galaxy A54 is equipped with a 6.4-inch display, an octa-core processor that offers enough power for everyday essentials (including light gaming) and a camera that handles your extraordinary shots well. I also like the design, especially the lime green version I reviewed. Its 128GB storage will be enough for most people, and those who need more space can expand it with microSD cards up to 1TB.

There is a lot going for it considering its reasonable price of $450. And it often sells for even less: I saw a price of $375 on Best Buy and Amazon while I was writing this review (unfortunately, I didn’t see it when the time of publication has arrived). Even with this potential discount, however, the Galaxy A54 shines with Google’s budget phones in key areas, especially the camera.

Even with the Galaxy A54’s competitive price, the competition is fierce, with Google’s excellent $349 Pixel 6A and the latest Pixel 7A at $499 — just $50 more than the A54’s regular retail price. We awarded the Pixel 6A our Editors’ Choice award for its combination of solid performance and an affordable price, while still being one of the best budget phones you can buy. The new Pixel 7A also impressed us with its great camera and smooth performance, which is why we recommend it over the Pixel 7 because it’s $100 cheaper.

Compared to the A54 5G, the Pixel 6A is still the right phone. Its performance is slightly better, its camera takes better shots, and Google’s stock version of Android is generally better to use than Samsung’s One UI skin. If you’re willing to pay $50 more, the Pixel 7A also offers better camera performance and wireless charging, which the Galaxy A54 5G lacks. However, the A54 is slightly larger and offers microSD card storage expansion, so it’s not a total win for the Pixel. Here’s what you need to know about the phone.

Best Samsung Phone 2023: Which Galaxy Smartphone Is Right For You?

The lime green version of my A54 5G is really nice with a glossy glass back and a metal bezel (it’s actually plastic). It’s nice enough to hold, though it lacks the more solid feel of the Pixel 6A or 7A. It has an IP67 water resistance rating (same as the Pixel 6A and 7A), keeping you safe while on the phone in the rain or around clumsy beer-bringing friends.

The 6.4-inch display is larger than the Pixel 6A’s 6.1-inch screen, which is worth keeping in mind if you spend a lot of time playing mobile games or watching videos and benefit from a larger screen. The Galaxy A54’s Live Display is slightly brighter than the Pixel 6A and 7A, making it better readable outside in direct sunlight.

The Galaxy A54 runs on an Exynos 1380 processor backed by 6GB of RAM. It scored fairly well in the benchmark tests considering its low price, which was slightly lower than the Pixel 6A. However, there is enough power to keep daily web browsing, WhatsApp texting and emailing fast. I can play both Genshin Impact and Asphalt 9: Legends on default settings with pretty smooth gameplay.

At its core, it runs on Android 13, on top of which Samsung launched its One UI software. While I like the overall look of this skin, I don’t like how much clutter Samsung has preinstalled on the phone. Apps like Disney Plus, Bolt, TikTok and Booking.com are already installed, along with several Samsung apps (including its own app store, Galaxy Shop, SmartThings, Messages and various TV and media apps). There are also a number of pre-installed Microsoft apps such as Linkedin and OneNote. I bought the phone unlocked direct from Samsung in the UK, so you can find a variety of apps on your phone – or even more carrier specific apps if you bought it off the network.

Even if you can uninstall many of them, external apps will make your phone feel cluttered as soon as you turn it on. In contrast, the Pixel 6A’s default interface is clean, uncluttered, and has only Google essentials like Chrome, Gmail, and Drive installed by default, with no third-party services forced on you from day one.

Both Samsung and Google promise security updates five years after launch to make them safer to use. However, this means that the Pixel 6A, which was launched last year, is guaranteed support until 2027, while the A54 should continue to receive updates until 2028. Samsung also offers the next generation of Android OS updates compared to Google. It’s not a big difference, but it’s worth keeping in mind if you want to squeeze every ounce of life out of your device.

The A54 is powered by a 5,000mAh battery, which is bigger than the 4,410mAh battery in the Pixel 6A. However, perhaps due to the larger screen, battery life on both phones was about the same during my YouTube streaming exhaustion test and with general use throughout the day. With careful use, you should get a full day out of both phones, but each still needs a full charge overnight.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 Review: The Fun Foldable Gets Refined

The base Galaxy A54 has 128GB of storage, but it’s one of the last remaining phones to support microSD card expandable storage up to 1TB. It’s a big plus because it means you can safely opt for the lowest storage model and just buy a cheap 128 GB card to double the storage, giving you plenty of space for photos, music or apps.

There are three cameras on the back of the phone; 50 megapixel main camera, 12 megapixel ultra-wide and 5 megapixel macro camera. I found the shots from the main camera to be generally decent, although the software optimizations often resulted in rather saturated images that looked quite unnatural to my eye. However, images look sharp and the default 2x digital zoom (no optical zoom here) produced sharp images.

When shooting with the main lens, the camera did a good job of balancing bright skies and shadowy buildings. Andrew Lanxon/

The super-wide-angle lens also performed well, with decent exposures and plenty of detail. I often found a fairly noticeable color shift between prime and wide angle lenses. The wide-angle lens generally produces slightly warmer colors, which I usually prefer to the often cold images captured by the main camera.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus Review: A Fantastic Phone (with A Catch)

This outdoor shot taken from the A54’s main camera is well exposed, but the colors are so saturated that they look rather unnatural. Andrew Lanxon/

Low-light imaging is decent, with the main lens capturing bright, sharp images that are roughly on par with the Pixel 6A.

The macro lens with a resolution of 5 megapixels allows you to focus on your subject. But like most of the macro lenses in phones we’ve seen from OnePlus and Samsung before, it’s pretty disappointing. Focus is sometimes off and colors look dull compared to photos taken with the main camera. Personally, I would have preferred that Samsung didn’t try to squeeze in an extra camera here and just knock a little extra off the asking price.

A macro lens allows you to get closer to your subject, but the results are usually not great and I found the lens a bit of a useless accessory. Andrew Lanxon/

Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus Review

While the A54’s camera setup won’t appeal to the photographers among you who want faithful shots, it will do the job just fine if you just want vivid shots of your kids on your next beach vacation. However, we prefer the shots from the Pixel 6A and 7A, which produce less oversaturated direct exposure images.

The combination of decent performance, fun design, lively cameras and low price makes the A54 a potentially great budget option. Its bright screen, expandable storage and longer software support work in its favor over Google’s Pixel 6A, but the Pixel 6A wins in almost every other way. The software is better to use, the cameras are better and it is also cheaper. Between the two, my money would go further
