The Samsung Galaxy S21 series promises a “daily story”. But Samsung’s three new phones — the $799 S21, $999 S21+, and $1,199 S21 Ultra — are simpler than the Epic, mostly tweaks and refinements of the S20 line’s concepts.

The three new phones are $200 to $400 cheaper than last year’s flagships, reflecting the pandemic. They’ve doubled down on last year’s 100x zoom promise, but insist they’ll make it right this year. They’re bringing the S Pen to non-Note Samsung phones. And they are the first Samsung phones to be certified for the upcoming C-band 5G network.

According to research firm M Science, Samsung’s S20 series, which launched just in time for the pandemic, sold less than the S10 during its launch. The S20’s high price drove people out in droves, expensive millimeter-wave 5G wasn’t a selling point outside of Verizon, and the S21 Ultra’s 100x, 108MP camera suffered from focus lock issues. The company redeemed itself at the end of the year with the gorgeous Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and the affordable Galaxy S20 FE.
Samsung’s Drew Blackard says the pandemic hasn’t taken us off our phones. It didn’t even take down 4G networks, as people at home stretched their bandwidth with various displays and parallel connections. I see this at home, my daughter uses a laptop for school, a drawing tablet and a phone for TikTok and social media.
“We’re always looking for new ways to connect with the people and things that matter most, and our smartphones are the best devices to help us stay connected,” Blackard said. “Short-form video shot directly from smartphones has become an expressive new medium, and we all rely on our devices more than ever.”
Blackard said the pandemic also saw a “bifurcation” in the smartphone market. “On the one hand, we’re seeing some customers increasingly appreciate the value … [but] on the other hand, there are people who want special rewards,” he said.

Like last year’s range, the S21 is available in three sizes. You can check out our iPhone 12 series vs S21 series comparison for more details. In short, they have 6.2-inch, 6.7-inch and 6.8-inch screens, all at 120Hz. Samsung says the Ultra’s display is 1,500 nits larger than last year’s display, up from 1,200 last year. The S21 and S21+ have overall similarities. The S21 Ultra speeds everything up with a higher-resolution screen, more cameras, zoom, a bigger battery, and more space.
All three phones have an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, which Samsung hasn’t detailed, but we’re guessing it’s the larger and faster second-generation sensor that Qualcomm announced this week. Samsung says the new sensor is “1.7x larger,” matching Qualcomm’s specifications.
In the US, all three phones use Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 888 chip. Outside of the US, that changes. Some models use a Samsung Exynos processor. There may be four or five different global models with different processors, numbers of SIM cards, and 5G bands. As always, you should buy a device designed for your country.
Samsung Galaxy S21 Vs S22: Are The Differences Worth An Upgrade?
The Galaxy S21 Ultra is available in black and silver, as well as titanium, navy and brown in some countries. The S21+ comes in Purple, Silver and Black. The S21 comes in purple, grey, pink and white. Samsung also promised gold and red versions of the smaller phones, but not in all countries, and it’s unclear if they’ll be available in the US.

The Galaxy S21 does not come with a charger or earphones. It’s a step backwards for Samsung to try to present this as a “regularity” issue.

Samsung is back in the 108MP business. The Galaxy S21 Ultra has a new main 108MP sensor that now has laser autofocus, so the sensor’s phase detection isn’t as lagging as it was on the S20 Ultra. Its 100x zoom uses two other lenses: a 10-megapixel 3x optical at f/2.4 and a 10-megapixel 10x optical at f/4.9, both with fast pixel autofocus. Last year’s Galaxy phones were the best at 5-10x zoom. These two lenses promise a quality zoom of 30x or more when working together.
It comes with new software to improve zoom and night mode. At very high magnification, it’s hard to hold the phone. You can now digitally lock a photo before pressing the shutter button. Night mode is also improved with better AI.
The S21 Ultra also has two cameras: a 12MP 120-degree ultra-wide-angle camera, now pretty standard, and a 40MP front-facing camera with phase-detection autofocus.
The lower-end Galaxy S21 and S21+ have camera setups closer to the previous S20+. There’s a 10MP camera on the front, a 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera on the back, a 12MP primary camera and a 64MP ‘combined motorized optical’ 3x telephoto. I’m a little worried about the use of “mixed motorized optics” here, meaning it might not be an optical zoom camera, but just a 64MP sensor with a 3x crop to get the zoom effect.
Samsung Galaxy S22 And S22+ Review: Excellent Isn’t Enough Anymore
All lenses stabilize video at 60 frames per second, as well as 4K video. All three of these phones have “Director’s View,” which uses the Snapdragon 888’s triple-image signal processor to capture the view of three rear cameras at once, and you can select one of them or combine them. You can take photos with the front and rear cameras at the same time. (Samsung phones used to have this feature, but it has been discontinued.)
There are also improvements to Samsung’s Single Shot mode, which takes 10 seconds of video and splits it into silent and short videos.
The S21 Ultra is Samsung’s first S-series phone to support the S Pen, the active Wacom stylus previously featured on the Note series. . You have to buy it separately with the case it comes in.
Now, Samsung says that the S21 Ultra will offer only the most basic writing and drawing features of the S Pen. In recent years, the company has played quite a bit with new S Pen features, such as triggering commands by drawing marks in the air. S21 does not support these actions. However, it works with the S Pen on existing Note phones, so if you have an older Note, you can use the S Pen here. I doubt it will work with any Wacom compatible stylus and look forward to trying it out.
Samsung Galaxy S21 Smartphone Review
A big advance is that the Galaxy S21 series is the first Samsung phone to support Group C. The cost of the new 5G frequency carriers is around $80 billion. C-band networks, likely from Verizon and AT&T, will go live later this year or early 2022, and will likely offer four or five times the speeds of 4G or “nationwide” 5G.
Samsung tells me that all three phones support 5G bands 2/5/12/25/30/41/48/66/71/77/78 and millimeter wave. This includes everything that US and Canadian carriers currently use or plan to use in the coming years. Apart from these phones, only the iPhone 12 series has received FCC certification for Group C.
The X60 phone model promises other network improvements, but we’ll have to check them out to find out more. Most importantly, the X60 will allow carriers to combine 5G spectrum in several ways, which could help AT&T and Verizon build “nationwide” 5G networks.
Both the S21+ and the S21 Ultra have messy UWB, which is a stark contrast to Verizon’s touted “UWB 5G.” This is a near-field positioning technology that indicates that UWB devices are connected to each other.
