The result is a clean, smooth black finish that not only provides a good grip when holding the phone, but also prevents smudges and fingerprints. Even after six months of use without a case or screen protector, the Gorilla Glass Victus is holding up well and there’s been no scratch so far.
The camera module bump on the back is still present, and the phone wobbles when placed face-up on a table, but that’s not a problem. This module fits into the phone body.

Samsung has opted for a slightly brighter display (1500 nits) than the S20 Ultra (1400). Wide viewing angles and vibrant colors let you enjoy HD content in stunning clarity. Whether you’re playing games or watching Netflix or YouTube, the viewing experience is great. There’s a hole punch cutout in the center above the screen for the front camera, but it doesn’t cause much of a drag when watching videos or playing games.
Unlike the Galaxy S20 Ultra, you no longer have to choose between maximum resolution and maximum refresh rate. Instead, you now get an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate with WQHD resolution. An interesting highlight of this display is the use of LTPO (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) technology to ensure optimal battery usage. This allows the display to intelligently switch between 10Hz and 120Hz depending on screen content.
For example, in the case of a static wallpaper or while reading an e-book, the refresh rate may drop to 10Hz. When playing graphic-intensive games or watching videos and movies, the screen refresh rate automatically increases to a maximum of 120Hz. There’s an option to drop the refresh rate to a constant 60Hz, but you won’t be able to force it to run at 120Hz all the time, and that’s not a problem at all.
For security purposes, Samsung uses Qualcomm’s second-generation ultrasonic under-display fingerprint scanner. It comes with 1.7x more surface area and over 50% faster recognition. In my six months of use, I found the scanner to be quicker and more accurate at recognizing fingerprints and unlocking them in a flash.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G is the first smartphone to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC in the United States. The global variant (like my India review unit), on the other hand, is powered by the Exynos 2100 SoC. Both chipsets are manufactured on Samsung’s 5nm node. (We’re reviewing a SKU with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.)
Performance-wise, the smartphone is a powerhouse. During my long-term use, I didn’t notice any stuttering or slowdowns. Be it using everyday communication apps or browsing the web or playing games, the apps don’t feel laggy at all. Samsung seems to have worked on improving memory management.
With few apps minimized in the background, the system doesn’t aggressively kill background apps, even when running heavy games. Allocate enough resources for the game to run smoothly. Samsung has clearly done a good job of optimizing both software and hardware.
However, thermal management could be better. After playing graphic-intensive games like PUBG Mobile, the back of the phone got warm in just under 10 minutes. Even though it was at 120Hz, dropping the refresh rate to 60Hz warmed up the phone, although it took about 25 minutes longer. Likewise, thermal management is good when shooting 1080p video, but when you upgrade to 4K 60fps, the phone overheats in about two minutes of recording.

The gaming experience is smooth, but the back of the smartphone gets warm when the refresh rate is set to 120Hz.
Another area for improvement is the headset. Call volume too low. I have to hold the headset too close to my ear to hear what the receiver is saying. But when playing media through the stereo speakers (with the headset acting as the secondary speaker), the audio output is quite loud.
Finally, the battery life of the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G is pretty good. With a refresh rate set to an adaptive 120Hz and general day-to-day use, including social media apps, listening to music via Bluetooth TWS, and an always-connected smartwatch, it lasts through the work day. In terms of screen time, I only have just over five hours. By switching to the standard 60Hz refresh rate, the battery life with the same use is closer to six hours.

Samsung has made major improvements to the camera system of the Galaxy S21 Ultra compared to last year’s Galaxy S20 Ultra. The main camera now has a 108MP (1/1.33″, 0.8µm) ISOCELL HM3 internal image sensor that offers improved autofocus, low light, and HDR performance. It uses Nonapixel technology with 9×1 pixel binning to produce 12MP photos by default. You can also click full 108MP resolution photos by enabling that feature in settings. A photo taken at full resolution is about 30MB in size, while a pixelated image is about 7MB in size.
Pro mode also lets you click RAW photos which you can edit later. These files are about 24MB in size. There are other interesting modes, such as Single Take which records 5-15 second video clips. AI then analyzes the video clips and chooses the best moments in the form of photos with filters, portrait mode, short boomerang-like video clips, dynamic slow motion and more. I’ve tried it several times and the results are impressive.
Talking about quality, the camera captures some stunning photos with great detail and wide dynamic range. The photo below was taken on a rainy day. It captures clouds, greenery, lake water, barbed wire, and rocks very well.
Close-up looks detailed. The photos below successfully capture dust particles on leaves, water droplets on flower petals, or a cupid in sharp focus and the background is defocused.

If you want more clarity in your close-up shots, there’s a “Focus Enhancer” mode that switches to an ultra-wide-angle lens. Now the entire frame is in focus, not just the subject with a blurred background.
The night mode gets a major upgrade by taking advantage of a large 108MP sensor where nine adjacent pixels are combined into a single pixel to absorb more light. AI can intelligently select the appropriate ISO setting between high and low. The result is a brighter image with less noise. The photos below were taken around midnight in a pitch-dark environment and showcase the AI capabilities of the smartphone.
Now, while the Galaxy S20 Ultra features a 10X hybrid zoom using a 48MP telephoto lens, the new Galaxy S21 Ultra features two telephoto lenses with each sensor having 10MP resolution but different focal lengths (70mm to 240mm equivalent). . This enables 10X optical zoom and up to 100X spatial zoom. Photos taken with 10X zoom are sharp and detailed.
