Samsung’s new Galaxy S20 Ultra superphone is packed with top-of-the-charts features, including 100x zoom, 108MP camera, big screen and 5G.

The £1,199 S20 Ultra leads a significant new line of 5G-like smartphones from Samsung, which aims to make the technology a regular part of mobile life rather than an expensive add-on for early adopters.
But in 2020 5G alone isn’t enough to stand out, so the S20 Ultra has a smorgasbord of specs and features that, on paper at least, make it unbeatable.

The first is the size of the object. It has a 6.9in QHD+ display, which is almost the size of a tablet. 222g in weight and 76mm in diameter, it’s well within the limits of what I can carry. The length of 166.9mm makes it difficult to put in a pocket without hurting the body or the phone while sitting.

The glass is slippery when it’s cold or on the couch, but the phone is so big that I don’t see much use without some kind of case or handle.
The refresh rate of the 120Hz screen is twice that of the standard 60Hz, and faster than the OnePlus 7 Pro and last year’s Pixel 4. Animations and scrolling of lists, sites and other content are so smooth at 120Hz that it is difficult to return to 60Hz, even if you reduce the resolution to FHD +.
Flip the phone over and you’ll find a super-sized lump housing four cameras and a flash in the upper left corner. It’s great, it packs a punch and you can feel it with your fingers when you use the phone.

The S20 Ultra is the first smartphone to be shipped to Europe with Samsung’s latest Exynos 990 processor. In the US it has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 instead. Both units come with 12 or 16GB of RAM, which is more than most laptops.
Performance on all rounds was excellent. Snappy, responsive and smooth, and graphics intensive games. Like everything else, the top battery on the S20 Ultra, with a capacity of 5,000mAh, is about 1,000mAh bigger than the iPhone 11 Pro Max or the OnePlus 7T Pro, and bigger than the 4,500mAh battery. on the S10 5G.
Battery life starts at 42 hours on 4G with the screen set to FHD + at 60Hz, up to 40 hours at 120Hz, and a solid 38 hours on 5G Vodafone with 120Hz active. The S20 Ultra will get you through the toughest days without charge.

Fully charging the S20 Ultra takes 70 minutes with the included power adapter, but closer to two hours with another 30-45W USB-C charger. 15W fast wireless charging and 7W wireless sharing are also available – perfect for charging the Galaxy Buds+ or other Qi-compatible phones on the back of the S20 Ultra.
Samsung doesn’t rate the battery on the S20 Ultra for multiple charge cycles (typically 500) but does offer a one-year warranty. Although it seems difficult to repair, Samsung says that the device can be generally repaired and the battery replaced, by an authorized service center at a cost of more than £200.
Samsung offers a trade-in and recycling scheme for old devices. It does not talk about the use of recycled materials in smartphones.
The Galaxy S20 Ultra runs the same version of Samsung’s customized One UI 10, called One UI 2, as the Galaxy Z Flip.

One UI has become one of the best implementations of Android, especially in large-screen smartphones, because it occupies the upper part of the screen as part of displaying information and the lower part – the bits you can reach with your thumb – as the place for all the assemblies.
You have to use the Samsung app to take advantage of it, but it’s widely available. You can do screen-multitasking, have apps floating in other apps (not just videos), duplicate messaging apps like WhatsApp to have two accounts on one phone, manage two SIMs quickly in the notification shade, and and many other things.
One UI 2 comes standard with Android’s three-button navigation bar, but Android 10’s new navigation system makes using the much larger screen easier.
Samsung only confirms two major versions of Android from release. It provides monthly security updates for the device but does not provide long-term support, but lists the current support status of the handset on its security site. Some models like the Galaxy S7 Edge from 2016 currently only receive monthly security updates.

Apple supports iPhones for about five years, including security and full iOS updates. Google offers about three years of security updates and versions of the Pixel line, while OnePlus offers two years of software and another year of security updates.
Samsung has just made a big move, but you still have to wait three months until the main version of the Android update appears after Google releases it. £1,199 is also a lot of money to pay for a phone that is only guaranteed to be renewed for two years.

The big bump on the back of the phone houses Samsung’s new quad camera system: 108MP wide-angle, 12MP wide-angle, 48MP telephoto with periscopic 4x zoom and depth sensor. There’s a 40MP front-facing camera that pops out of the screen as well.

Samsung’s camera system took a big leap last year, after falling behind competitors Apple, Google and Huawei. The camera quartet allows you to zoom seamlessly from an ultrawide angle (0.5x), with a wide angle (1x) and out to a 4x light zoom, then to a 10x hybrid zoom. From there you go to what Samsung calls “Space Zoom”, which is basically a digital zoom up, taking you up to 100x magnification.
The 12MP ultrawide camera produces stunning shots in the best lighting conditions, perfect for creating a close-up fisheye effect or capturing more cityscapes in one shot.

The 108MP main camera takes 12MP photos by default, combining the nine pixels on the sensor into one pixel for the final image, in a process known as pixel binning. The resulting photos are excellent, with a good balance of detail and low noise, although sometimes a little sharp in full plant, even in the middle of a British house where previous Samsung cameras have struggled. The night mode offered by Samsung is good but not at the same level as the Night Sight on the Pixel 4, it takes a long time to capture the same image.

The live view mode is also good, but since the wide-angle camera takes pictures with a lot of natural bokeh, I don’t need to use the artificial mode. The camera app has various beauty and smoothing features, if you get stuck.
The camera can take full 108MP images, but I find that the 12MP mode often produces better images. It’s nice to have a creative option, though, because you can crop directly from the 108MP image to close up without using the zoom.

Zoom is the star of the show, competing with the previous zoom master, the Huawei P30 Pro, which uses the same periscope lens system for 5x optical zoom. Shooting at 4x optical zoom is the best, but push it to 10x and, while not lost, the picture is really good, blowing everything but the P30 Pro out of the water.

Zooming up to 30x, the image is still very good, while Samsung’s 50x zoom beats Huawei’s equivalent from last year. The 100x title image can’t be used outside as a substitute for binoculars, as the image is full of artifacts. It is worth noting that it is very difficult to hold vertically at 100x, although Samsung’s picture-in-picture is a target box that comes out to help hit the target with 20x magnification.
