Update Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 3 Network Review – Samsung’s new flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S20 Ultra, lives up to its name, at least on paper. Five cameras over 200 megapixels, 8K video recording and as much storage and RAM as a decent desktop computer. A week of extensive testing of the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra leaves me with only good impressions.
All Samsung Galaxy S20 models are now available. The Galaxy S20 Ultra starts at €1,349 for the model with 128 GB of storage and 12 GB of RAM. The top model with 512 GB storage and 16 GB RAM costs 1,549 euros to start.

Samsung thus positions the device next to the iPhone 11 Pro Max, which costs between 1,249 and 1,649 euros. In Europe, the Galaxy S20 Ultra is only available in the 5G compatible version. Samsung is in trouble. On the one hand, Chinese manufacturers are attacking with attractive budget-priced flagship smartphones, greedy for market share. On the other hand, there has been an expensive feature race with Apple and Huawei for years. Samsung doesn’t have much room for very bold design changes with its Galaxy S series flagship smartphones.
While the South Koreans are already laying the groundwork for the foldable future of smartphones with the Galaxy Fold and the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip, the new Galaxy S20 Ultra is conservative, at least from the outside. However, don’t be fooled by the relatively quiet design of the Galaxy S20 Ultra. The new quad camera system on the back reveals Samsung’s ambitions. But the true splendor lies within rather than on the surface.
Remember the days when people marveled at the “huge” Galaxy Note smartphones? Well… the Galaxy S20 Ultra is bigger than the current biggest Galaxy Note. On the other hand, its settings are nothing special these days: the ceramic body is protected by Gorilla Glass 6 around it. There are no playful color combinations (yet), the smaller models are at least available in a slightly brighter shade of blue. Rose from scratch. The black or gray Galaxy S20 Ultra is a little more colorful than your chubby fingers, and it attracts like a magnet.
For this reason alone, the camera on all Galaxy S20 models has been excellent so far, as a protective cover is practically mandatory. However, this makes handling the device more difficult. Anyway, I’m glad I didn’t go out too much during the test. Because the Galaxy S20 Ultra certainly won’t fit in any trouser pocket.

What we can say is that the Galaxy S20 Ultra’s 6.9-inch Dynamic Quad HD+ AMOLED display is impressive with its 511 ppi pixel density and HDR10+ certification. Unsurprisingly, Samsung also builds some of the industry’s best displays for Apple’s iPhone, among other things. Crisp, sharp, bright, rich colors and even thinner edges at the top and bottom than its predecessor.
Instead, there is no redundant and unnecessary “waterfall” screen like in Huawei’s flagship models, which curves around the left and right sides of the device. Of course, the screen falls a little to the side, but not too much. There is enough space for the well-placed power and volume buttons.
The great novelty of the Galaxy S20 Ultra screen is the refresh rate of 120 Hertz. 90Hz is already well established in the market, but 120Hz is now entering the mainstream. The screen with it is sleek and smooth, but there is a catch.
By default, the Galaxy S20 Ultra runs at 1080p 60Hz. So if you go to the settings, as we did, of course, immediately the disappointment spreads: it is not possible to choose with 120 Hz WQHD resolution. So you have a choice between higher resolution or faster frequency with FHD+. However, with Oppo’s new Find X2 Pro offering a full 120Hz resolution, I expect a patch from Samsung soon. Because other than battery life, I don’t see any reason to block Samsung here.

Below the screen we find the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor known from the S10 series. There’s also a simple and notoriously insecure face unlock via the selfie camera.
The bottom line is that the Galaxy S10 Ultra’s screen is the best I’ve come across in years of smartphone testing.
Samsung uses its own One UI 2.1 interface based on Android 10 for the Galaxy S20. I’m not really a fan of Samsung software, once spoiled by the patchy TouchWiz. But this has improved. I’m still impressed with the added functionality of this Android variant, especially compared to a Google Pixel or OnePlus smartphone. Still, I like one more UI with each update.
One of my favorite features is pinning an app to RAM. This gives you more control when multitasking. Because this way you can be sure that an app will actually continue to run in the background and won’t close. With 12GB of RAM, you should be able to pin most apps until you run out of memory.

In terms of performance, the Samsung S20 Ultra packs 12 to 16 gigabytes of RAM. Depending on whether you choose a model with 128 or 256 or 512 gigabytes of storage space, it can be expanded up to 1 terabyte via MicroSD.
In Europe and select markets, all S20 models are equipped with Samsung’s Exynos 990, while Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 octa-core processor is used in the US. However, the Exynos variant proves to be quite weak in testing.
While we’ll notice a few shortfalls compared to the US variant in everyday life (the Galaxy S20 Ultra excels in all areas), the disparity between the two hardware variants has become glaring at times.

The Galaxy S20 Ultra is a 5G (mmWave, Sub 6, TDD/FDD) ready smartphone. Unfortunately, I could not test this feature due to lack of network access. However, colleagues in the UK or the US report excellent results in basic 5G speed tests with the S20 Ultra.
Samsung wants to catch some particularly big fish with the camera this year. A main camera with 108 megapixels, 48 MP for the telephoto camera and zoom up to 100x and ultra-wide angle and a time-of-flight camera for “DepthVision” should put the competition in its place.

Combined with the powerful chipset, 8K video recording is also possible. To be able to enjoy such large videos with pixel precision, you need an ideally suited 8K TV from Samsung. If you don’t have an 8K screen handy, you can take advantage of the freedom that video offers in this high resolution. So if the final video plays only in 4K or Full HD, you should be able to change the aspect ratio without significant quality loss. Thanks to the “8K Video Snap” feature, 33-megapixel photos can also be generated from 8K videos. The Ultra-style selfie camera integrated into the screen through the “hole” has a resolution of 40 megapixels. On the other hand, the two smaller models offer only 10 megapixel resolution.
During my week of testing, I realized that the hype about the Smarttones’ great zoom levels was completely unfounded. I still find the 5x zoom useful in some cases; Ten times zoom is already at the limit. However, “100x” is a pure marketing ploy, as no photos taken at this magnification level can be used.

To be honest, I expected the 120Hz display to affect battery life more than it ended up. Unfortunately, connection restrictions applied at the time of testing clouded my impression of battery life a bit; So I rarely travel outdoors and use the mobile radio module.
