The worst part is that the design and certain specifications of the Galaxy M31 may not match some of the other better looking and more powerful smartphones coming up in this segment.

As mentioned earlier, the Samsung Galaxy M31 has a familiar design. It looks very similar to the Galaxy M30s, with a plastic unibody panel on the back with a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor and a square-shaped camera module in the top left corner. While the plastic material helps keep the smartphone light (despite the massive battery), it makes it less attractive compared to all-glass phones like the Redmi Note 8 Pro (Review).
The front of the Samsung Galaxy M31 is also familiar as it greets you with a 6.4-inch Full HD+ (2,340 x 1,080) Super AMOLED Infinity-U display, just like its predecessors. At the top of the display is a U-shaped notch that houses the selfie camera and a rather thick chin.
The Samsung Galaxy M31 is a thick phone and quite heavy in the hand, so it gets tiring after holding it for a while. The smartphone comes in blue, black and red colors. The glossy back panel makes the Galaxy M31 a magnet for fingerprints and smudges, which is quite noticeable on the black variant we received for review. Also, the back panel attracts scratches if you put it on a table or in your pocket with some keys.

The biggest upgrade to the Galaxy M31 is the cameras. The smartphone has a 64MP quad-camera setup on the back, instead of the 48MP triple camera system on the Galaxy M30s. The new setup includes a high-resolution 64MP f/1.8 Samsung GW1 primary sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens, a 5MP depth camera, and a 5MP macro lens. The updated setup is more versatile, giving users more ways to shoot.
The Galaxy M31’s primary camera takes decent photos in daylight. When Scene Optimizer is on, the camera uses a lot of software processing to enhance colors, which you might want instead of more natural tones. So if you’re taking flowers, for example, vegetables will be more green, and roses can be red. The images are warmer, which means you won’t get the natural white colors. Overall, daylight photos lack contrast and dynamic range compared to the Redmi Note 8 Pro in this segment.
The main camera can quickly focus on a subject in daylight, but it struggles a bit after the sun goes down. By default, the main camera shoots at 16MP and uses pixel binning to make photos sharper and sharper. You can manually switch the aspect ratio to 3:4 64MP for high resolution images. However, 64MP photos will look darker, have no HDR support, and should only be used in daylight if you want to capture a wide landscape to zoom in on later.

Moving on from the main camera, the Samsung Galaxy M31’s 8MP wide-angle takes great wide-angle shots in daylight. The colors look good and have enough detail until you zoom in and look at the pixels. In portrait mode, using live focus mode can get some bokeh shots if the blur effect is not extreme. Skin tones look warm and soft, but good detail can be found.
Finally, we have a 5MP macro camera that can get up to 3cm from the subject. Again, best used in daylight, the macro camera allows for creative close-up shots. Macros can appear clear and detailed as long as the object is not. However, colors tend to look muted and washed out compared to the natural bokeh that can be captured with the main camera.
The Galaxy M31 is pretty good at video recording. Both front and rear cameras can record UHD videos. The main camera also supports Super Steady mode, which does a good job of keeping video shake-free when recording handheld.
Samsung has also upgraded the front-facing camera from 16MP to 32MP, which means the Galaxy M31 will take sharper selfies. While this is true, and the selfie camera captures good detail in clothes and hair, it’s still flat on the face even with beauty mode turned off. The front camera also supports Live Focus, which lets you adjust the bokeh intensity in real time. The greater the bokeh effect, the more unnatural the separation of the subject will look.

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy M31 has a versatile camera setup that will allow you to take pictures from different perspectives. And while the 64MP quad-camera system looks like a nice upgrade thanks to the added macro lens, it’s not the best quad-camera setup compared to competitors in the segment.
The Samsung Galaxy M31 is powered by a 2.3GHz Exynos 9611 octa-core chipset based on a 10nm process and features a Mali G72 MP3 GPU. This is the same processor that also powers the Galaxy M30s. Samsung has increased the base variant from 4GB of RAM to 6GB of RAM, which should provide a smoother multitasking experience. The smartphone comes in 64GB and 128GB storage variants which can be further expanded up to 512GB via a microSD card.
Right out of the box, the Samsung Galaxy M31 feels as vibrant as you’d expect from a brand new smartphone. Scrolling was smooth in One UI 2.0 and apps opened quickly too. Throughout the week of use, we didn’t notice any slowdown or lag when using various day-to-day apps for messaging, social media browsing, etc.
The Exynos 9611 is a decent mid-range processor that easily copes with everyday tasks. It can also run graphic intensive games like PUBG with high graphics and frame rate settings by default. We played a 30-minute PUBG session on default settings, which went well. At high and extreme graphics settings, we noticed that the phone heats up while gaming. However, this didn’t affect the phone’s battery life, as a 30-minute session only drained the battery by about 5 percent, which is impressive.

For Android 10-based One UI 2.0 software, it’s a pretty simple and easy-to-use interface. In fact, the Galaxy M31 ships with One UI Core instead of One UI, which means it’s missing some features like Bixby and Bixby Home. You also can’t download Samsung Pay from the Play Store. The slimmed-down One UI Core will still feel like One UI, so if you don’t miss Bixby and Samsung Pay too much, you should be happy with the software.
