In terms of looks, the Galaxy M31 is surprisingly clear. It has no gradients, patterns or reflective layers. While we are happy enough to see this, it certainly helps with current trends and expectations. It remains to be seen how the glossy finish will hold up to scratches and scuffs, but it does pick up fingerprints fairly easily.
The front of the phone is pretty standard for a low-cost device these days. The chin is quite thick and there is a simple waterdrop notch at the top of the screen for the single 32-megapixel front camera.
Samsung used a Super AMOLED panel which is slightly brighter. Colors look vivid and punchy if slightly oversaturated. We’ll tweak a few settings and see how it works for us during our detailed review, coming soon.
The battery of course makes this phone relatively thick and heavy, at 8.9mm and 191g respectively. It doesn’t feel unbalanced in the hand though, and the back has a decent enough grip that the phone never slipped when we reached the top corner of the screen with our thumb. The back bends slightly, which also helps with use, and we like that the camera module just pops out.

Talking about the module on the back, we have a 64-megapixel main camera that uses Samsung’s ISOCELL GW1 sensor, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, a 5-megapixel macro camera and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. There is a live focus mode and a night mode. Getting around the camera app is fairly easy.
The power button on the right side is easy to find, but there is no volume rocker at the top. However, we were happy that the fingerprint sensor on the back is not only big enough, but also very practical. There is a USB Type-C port, a 3.5mm headphone jack and a speaker at the bottom. The tray on the left holds two nano-SIMs and a microSD card.
One disappointment, at least on paper, is the fact that Samsung hasn’t upgraded the Exynos 9611 processor, which was used by some older Samsung phones, including the Galaxy M30s. While our experience with the phone was smooth for the most part, Samsung’s competitors are not sitting still and already have more powerful options in this price segment.
We were happy to see Android 10, with Samsung’s relatively polished OneUI 2.0 skin. During the setup process we saw a “Receive marketing information” checkbox, which is checked by default – if left as is, Samsung says it can use email, SMS and push notifications to send you “news, special offers and recommendations about our products and services.” ” We also think animated lockscreens and candy-colored wallpapers are overkill.

As an M-series device, you don’t get many frills. There’s nothing in the box except a 15W charger, a USB Type-C cable, and a SIM eject pin. The charger and cable are black, which is interesting, but 15W might be a bit weak to charge this 6000mAh battery quickly.

Without changing things too much, the Galaxy M31 looks and feels similar to the Galaxy M30s, which is both good and bad. The good thing is that the smartphone has all the right features to make it a solid Rs 15,000 smartphone. The downside is that the design and some of the specifications of the Galaxy M31 may not be up to par with some of the better and more powerful smartphones that will soon be launched in this segment.
As mentioned earlier, the Samsung Galaxy M31 comes with a familiar design. It’s similar to the Galaxy M30s in that it has a unibody plastic panel at the back with a rear-facing fingerprint sensor and a square-shaped camera module in the top left corner. While the plastic material helps keep the smartphone light (despite the large battery), it feels less attractive than an all-glass phone like the Redmi Note 8 Pro (review).

The front of the Samsung Galaxy M31 is also familiar, as you’ll be greeted by a 6.4-inch Full HD + (2,340 x 1,080) Super AMOLED Infinity-U display, just like its predecessor. The display has a U-shaped notch that houses the selfie camera and a fairly thick chin.
The Samsung Galaxy M31 is a thick phone and feels a bit heavy in the hand, so it gets tiring to hold after a while. The smartphone is available in Blue, Black and Red color options. Thanks to the glossy back panel, the Galaxy M31 is a fingerprint and smudge magnet, which is noticeable in the black variant we received for review. Also, the back panel gets scratched if you carry some keys on the table or in your pocket.
The volume and power buttons are placed high on the right side of the frame, which is not always easy to reach with one hand. Below the frame is a Type C port, 3.5mm headphone jack and a single speaker grill. The left side of the frame houses the card slots that can hold two nano SIM cards and one microSD card.
Samsung makes stunning displays, so it’s understandable that the company didn’t feel the need to make any changes here. The 6.4-inch Super AMOLED display looks stunning with vibrant, saturated colors and excellent viewing angles.
