The only price segment that adequately caters to the needs of Indians is the budget segment. The icing on the cake is when these very affordable devices come packed with high features, which ends our desire for premium devices in the mobile world. Samsung, like Xiaomi, Realme, is fighting for the same and has launched a new smartphone in its budget Galaxy M series called Samsung Galaxy M31.

Update Samsung Galaxy M31 Processor Review Review

The Galaxy M31 is the successor of the Galaxy M30s and aims to give us a good smartphone experience with all the outstanding features it packs. However, is it a worthy upgrade to the Galaxy M30s and a tough competitor in the budget ring? Read my review to find out.

Exclusive: Samsung Galaxy M11 And Galaxy M31 Are In Development

The Samsung Galaxy M31 is well and simply designed when it comes to budget smartphones. There is not much to do, but what we have on the plate is always pleasing to the eye. When I first held the Galaxy M31, it felt quite bulky. But as it adjusted in my hand, I realized it was light. Made of polycarbonate, the device comes in two color options: Ocean Blue and Space Black. I got the black color and I liked the classic black tone of the device, which can never go wrong for a smartphone or anything painted black. Although the smartphone does not have a glass back, it is not the last in the design race and offers us a stylish design, not so cheap and solid.

In terms of build, the Galaxy M31 has a rectangular camera module on the back in the upper left corner. The camera setup consists of three camera sensors and an LED flash. There’s a fingerprint scanner in the middle, followed by the Samsung brand at the bottom. In front, there is a teardrop notch at the top and less bezel. The chin has a 3.5mm audio jack, a USB Type-C port and a speaker grill (from left to right). The head is nothing. The left side of the smartphone houses a SIM slot and the left side houses the volume rocker and power button. Speaking of the volume button, it is placed high and reaching it was not as easy as on any other smartphone.

The Samsung Galaxy M31 is not a perfectly designed smartphone and it does not bring anything new. But it looks decent and I give it good marks for its simplicity.

The Samsung Galaxy M31 has a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED Full HD + display, known as the Infinity-U display. The name comes from the presence of a tooth in the form of a drop of water. It is protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 which is a little disappointing. The smartphone has a number of display features, which is mostly the case with all Samsung smartphones. There’s adaptive brightness, blue light filter, dark mode, a choice between vivid and natural screen colors, always on display, accidental touch protection, touch sensitivity and more. While all the screen features come in handy, accidental touch protection doesn’t really offer any protection as the device can be accessed accidentally.

Samsung Galaxy M31 Review, Price, And Specifications

The viewing experience is more than decent and this is the area where Samsung continues to excel. For a budget smartphone, we have a screen that makes it nice to use. The screen is neither large nor small and is very bright. The Infinity-U display ensures the right screen size for video use and streaming. Whether it’s on YouTube or Netflix or any other streaming service, watching content has been great. The smartphone appealed to a person who is more interested in watching Netflix on their TV (Amazon Fire Stick is an advantage here), and this is the positive aspect of the Galaxy M31.

Starting with the camera setup, the Galaxy M31 has a quad camera setup on the back. There is a 64MP main snapper, an 8MP ultra-wide angle lens, a 5MP depth sensor and a 5MP macro lens. We have a front camera of 32 MP. The smartphone supports various camera features such as 4K video recording, super slow motion video, Super Steady mode, LED flash, HDR mode, night mode among others.

The only word I have for the Galaxy M31’s camera is decent. The cameras perform well in most lighting conditions and that is a positive point. The downside is the grainy images of indoor scenes (when zoomed in, of course). Most of the time we get detailed images and the results are not over processed either. But they reflect tint oversaturation. The ultra-wide-angle lens is very decent, as on any other Samsung smartphone, and the HDR mode also works well. However, the macro lens is really moody and fails to capture as much detail as you would expect. Among others, Night Mode works well, not brilliantly, and Live Focus works well, but it’s very moody like the macro lens.

The 32MP front shooter is pretty decent. There is less embellishment and the details stand out. But in this case, too, the images are chosen for warmer tones and this is a little disappointing. The video department is doing well; The Super Steady mode delivers the stability it claims to give, the 4K videos are also fine (records at 360 fps) and the slow motion videos are above average.

Samsung Galaxy M31 To Go On Sale For The First Time Today Via Amazon; Price In India Starts At Rs 14,999

The Samsung Galaxy M31 is powered by the company’s Exynos 9611 processor, along with 6GB of RAM. The smartphone has two internal storage variants – 64GB and 128GB, where I received the latter. The storage can be expanded with the use of a memory card up to 512 GB. The smartphone acts as a decent daily driver. I am a “smartphone basic use” person and I do not push a device to its limits. So for me, the Galaxy M31 did more than decent. From using social networks to streaming videos to playing games (both PUBG Mobile and Candy Crush Saga) to clicking photos, all tasks were done with ease and I did not face many problems with the smartphone. However, there were times when it stutters and lags with a number of apps running in the background. This was significantly reduced with a simple “reduce animation” trick in the Settings menu. As a reminder, this trick also worked well with the Galaxy S10 Lite.

The battery is the highlight of the Galaxy M31. With a massive 6,000mAh battery, the Galaxy M31 clearly stands out in the budget realm. The battery, with my use, easily lasted me two days and I knew I was at peace (with all the binges) on a single charge. One of the problems I faced was that the charging was not so fast. The 15W fast charge did not charge the device too quickly, so I hope that Samsung focuses on this area for its budget smartphones as well.

As for the UI, I started to like Samsung UI 2.0 with the Galaxy S10 Lite and will stick to the position. The UI is clean and easy to navigate. Apart from the Focus mode, Digital well-being, parental control, dark mode and a couple of gestures, I did not face any problems with the smartphone interface. However, what I did not like was a number of preloaded apps (bloatware) and this time I did not like their presence. Among others, the fingerprint scanner and Face Unlock were fast and the audio quality was also good. However, I missed the earphones in the box, which I think Samsung should start adding with their budget smartphones too.

The Samsung Galaxy M31, with a price starting at Rs. 14, 999,  is another move by Samsung to maintain its dominance in the budget segment. And this time, it’s not a bad try, given that the massive 6,000mAh battery steals the show. However, upgrading the Galaxy M30s is not a good idea because both smartphones share most of the features. It competes against the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro which packs a MediaTek Helio G90T processor with Corning Gorilla Glass 5, and the Realme XT which has an in-display fingerprint scanner.

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5g Review: Good Phone, Bad Processor

Although the Galaxy M31 has some flaws compared to its competition, the smartphone is no less and therefore is an option to consider for its user interface (I like it better than MIUI) and decent camera in addition to the battery.
