I’m still amazed that you can afford a £245 smartphone with a powerful AMOLED screen and a two-day battery life. For anyone who enjoys content on their phone, the Samsung Galaxy M31 is an incredible bargain. Don’t expect it to take you anywhere else.

Samsung’s A-series smartphones are a staple in many UK markets, and with good reason. It aims to attract half the crowd currently seen by Xiaomi and OnePlus. And yet the Galaxy M-series is a rare issue despite being an important part of Samsung’s global production.

Very popular in India, the Galaxy M smartphones try to pack exceptional value for money into an affordable model – at least that’s what it looks like on paper. The range recently received a major update for 2020 and one of these phones – the Samsung Galaxy M31 – has made its way to the UK market.
The Galaxy A series did a pretty good job in the mid-range, but can Samsung do the feat again just by bumping up the price? It’s time to find out.
At 159.2 x 75.1 x 8.9mm and 191g, the Galaxy M31 is a heavy phone by modern standards. Having only recently experienced the depth of the Pixel 3a XL, the M31 looks like a mammoth in comparison. But with the added heft that comes with the feeling of weight, you know it’s still a product, even if it’s on the affordable end of the spectrum.
At this point, the phone sports a 6.4-inch screen topped by a teardrop shape and minimal chin frame at the bottom. For just £245 I was amazed at how incredible the phone looked. There’s even a 3.5mm headphone jack (though on the bottom).

However, when you turn the phone back on, things feel a little different. First off, the M31’s plastic back is just a finger magnet and the slick body itself doesn’t hold up at all. Unless you’re absolutely sure you can’t leave the phone, we recommend keeping the information safe.
Although there’s a small camera here, the four-sensor camera array is barely visible, even when the phone is in your pocket or lying with the screen facing the table.
As with the A series, Samsung’s marketing for the M series focused on three key areas: screen, camera and battery life. While we’ll get to those last two in a bit, I’m happy to report that Samsung has hit the bullseye with the M31’s screen, arguably the best phone (price aside) out there.
However, the 6.4-inch screen uses a smooth AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 to ensure everything is always on screen, not the web background or your second episode of The Last Dance on Netflix ( look at).

Of course, even with FHD+ at the highest resolution, there’s no getting around having to deal with the editing if you want to jump to the full-screen experience. Granted, it’s ridiculous compared to Apple’s current heavy-duty shelf, but it’s still there.
The only other minor issue is that it has a basic 60Hz screen, unlike the new Moto G 5G Plus. But given that some phones in this price range have made a jump to 90Hz at this point, it’s inevitable.
Get used to using the optimized and almost bug-free Android 10 version of the Pixel 3a XL. Samsung’s custom skin looks clunky, although it’s not the worst out there.
For example, there’s little bloatware except for Samsung’s own apps, which seem to be used, although for some reason I have to resort to the Galaxy Store if there’s the Google App Store about me.
Is It Worth Buying Samsung Galaxy M31
Luckily, everything works well with the M31 despite the cheap price. That’s thanks to the Samsung Exynos 9611 SoC processor and 6GB of RAM under the hood. Don’t expect to be fast with the M31, but this configuration delivers a fair amount of performance where it counts.
For example, the dedicated fingerprint sensor is fast and reliable (arguably better than some of the in-display fingerprint sensors I’ve seen on pricier phones). The same goes for the face unlock, which has a little animation playing below the front camera to let you know it’s doing its job.
However, a constant problem is the inconsistency with certain wearables. Although this seemed to improve after a few software updates, the phone kept losing connection with my Whoop 3.0 Band and TicWatch C2 Plus smartwatch. If you’re not a smartwatch fanatic, you might not be able to skip this issue, but for fitness enthusiasts like me who like to track health data, it’s become a real torment.
If you fancy some mobile gaming on your lunch break, the M31 should have you covered with a wealth of titles – but don’t expect to be running Fortnite on it any time soon. As the launcher regularly points out, the Galaxy M31 isn’t among the phones that are currently optimized for playing Fornite, and getting into the game has shown that creating an incredible kid-friendly game isn’t easy. Surprisingly, however, the M31 had no trouble playing online games in Call of Duty: Mobile, and smaller titles like Alto’s Odyssey performed well.

Blame it on the fact that my old computer has a somewhat dodgy wifi connection, but in this new home environment I’ve decided to use my phone as my main tool for Zoom calling and listening. Music, track my indoor workouts and enjoy some YouTube flair over lunch. Suffice it to say that I put the Galaxy M31’s battery through its paces, but it happily held up.
Equipped with a battery with a capacity of 6,000 mAh, the Galaxy M31 managed to last two days on a single charge, despite being connected to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, various wearables and two wireless headphones most of the time. Link to quality assessment. This is on top of the hard work I mentioned earlier. Put simply, you have to be a serious patient to even think about draining a full battery in a day.
The Galaxy M31 is proven to have multi-day battery life that doesn’t cost the earth, and if you’re planning on using the M31 as your main media device, this incredible battery pack with the phone’s AMOLED screen is what you need to compete. – made in heaven. You can munch on content for hours with this product.
The only novelty is the need to incorporate a 15W fast charge, which I would like to make different. When plugged into an outlet, it takes just two hours to reach a full 8% charge. If charging your phone at night is part of your daily routine, you won’t have a problem here, but there’s just no point in quickly charging your phone before leaving the house. Ask for.

On paper, the promise of a Samsung smartphone with four rear cameras for under £250 sounds too good to be true, and unfortunately it is. On the back is a 64-megapixel f/1.8 main sensor, an 8-megapixel f/2.2 ultra-wide sensor, a 5-megapixel f/2.2 depth sensor, and everyone’s favorite , a 5-megapixel f/2.4 macro camera.
My kid, I don’t happen to share the same hatred of macro camera integration in smartphones as other reviewers, and it’s always fun to photograph bugs or flowers from time to time, but let’s face it, the real meat and potatoes are ultra-wide and big cameras.
From the last one I was really surprised at how good the shots can be with the M31’s main sensor. For example, the photo below of my perfect couple has a nice bokeh effect and the colors are bright without being saturated.
It’s only when you start zooming in on the image that you realize the camera’s inability to capture detail better, a problem that becomes more apparent when you switch to the M31’s ultra-wide lens.

Zooming into the corners of each wide-angle shot with the M31 reveals a subtle difference. I can understand the frustration of wanting an angle sensor, but if it’s just going to underperform then I’d rather see the resources invested in it. Hit the main sensor. In comparison, the Pixel 3a only has one face, but it has the advantage of being one of the best phones for photography.
