Priced at Rs 20,499, the Samsung Galaxy M31 (Review) is still a solid Android smartphone that tops the budget smartphone segment in India. When the waterdrop launched earlier this year, it offered great value for money, given its AMOLED display and 64MP camera. The only thing holding the M31 back was its relatively cheap plastic body and lackluster gaming performance.

But do they add up? How does the M31 v2.0 stack up against the competition? Let’s find out.
The “glass” (plastic that feels like glass) back isn’t bad at all and feels quite premium compared to the M31. The two-tone “Mirage Blue” finish looks a bit shiny. The straight sides and slightly rounded corners look pretty good, as does the overall build quality. Yes, it picks up fingerprints, but you can wipe them off very easily.

I believe this is on purpose so you don’t lock the phone when you click the power button to confirm the app. That was the problem when I reviewed the small but powerful Galaxy S10e over a year ago. Most smartphone brands don’t have the right openings. The large punch is often placed so deep inside the display that it takes up twice as much space as the notification panel on a regular smartphone with a notch.
Samsung does a really good job of keeping the camera block (or gap) small and it sits just 3-4mm from the top bezel of the screen. The result? It doesn’t eat into the display, but it takes up less space than a regular notch with water drops, giving you a larger viewing area.

Super AMOLED panels are known for their deep black colors. The panel on this phone doesn’t disappoint, although it doesn’t match the good stuff you get in the mid-range with the A series. Some may prefer the default ‘Vivid’ color mode, but I felt it was a bit oversaturated, with reds appearing borderline orange. When set to ‘Natural’, colors looked flawless and the deep blacks made for a really enjoyable video streaming experience compared to regular LCD panels. There was no problem with the brightness either, as the content was readable even in direct sunlight.
The screen is really worth the extra money compared to more affordable LCD alternatives from Chinese smartphone brands.
Given the Exynos 9611 chipset inside, the M31s doesn’t seem as fast as I’d like. But things are still pretty smooth and I haven’t noticed any hiccups in day-to-day use apart from some minor stuttering when juggling between third-party apps.

The user interface itself is well designed, with an emphasis on large icons and one-handed control, where all UX elements (in native apps) are relegated to the bottom half of the screen. Add that AMOLED display to the mix and you have always-on features that don’t even affect battery life, since the phone’s battery is larger than usual.
If you’re not a fan of Xiaomi’s MIUI, you should try One UI, which is actually a better ad-free alternative to custom Android skins.
The 64-megapixel Sony sensor does a reasonably detailed job with warm color tones and daylight or low-light conditions. Noise increases slightly in low light, but is well controlled in darker scenes. Impressive.

Switch to night mode and you might be a little disappointed. Image quality is average, with some aggressive noise reduction for foliage, walls, etc. resulting in a lack of detail in textures such as This is especially true when there is little or no light in the scene, as shown below.
The biggest problem is that night mode literally cuts out a large portion of the scene to what appears to be 2x the crop compared to what you see in the viewfinder in auto mode. Instead of the usual 16-megapixel box output, you get a lower-quality 7-megapixel image.
I understand that clipping the sensor output gives you more room for software adjustments (to compensate for hand movement). But cutting that much is asking too much.
Plus, there’s no escaping the crop factor in the main 64-megapixel shooter with night mode. Switch to a 12MP ultra-wide camera in the same mode and the results are truly unusable and blurry at best.

The 5-megapixel macro camera was impressive. It doesn’t come with an autofocus system, so you’ll need to hold the camera steady 4-5cm away from the subject. The photos are a little soft, but as you can see in the image above, the images are full of details, such as the ridges of the snail shell.
The selfies taken with the 32 MP camera are quite nice and have good dynamic range, but they are a bit oversaturated. It delivers slightly blurry photos in low light, but there’s a night mode to compensate.
4K, 1080p and 720p video recording is surprisingly available on both the front and rear cameras, but both are limited to 30 frames per second. The stabilization is really good and so is the frame rate, which remains constant. Low-light shots aren’t bad either, it’s just that the camera takes an extra second to focus on the scene or subject.
The battery with a capacity of 6000 mAh lasts a really long time thanks to the low power consumption of the chipset and normal use outside the game, it lasts two days without any problems. The 25W charger is fast and will get you up and running in about an hour and a half, which isn’t bad considering the battery capacity.

The Exynos 9611 chipset is no powerhouse. It’s the perfect fit for a phone designed to keep you entertained, whether it’s casual gaming or streaming movies on the sAMOLED display.
This chipset may not affect Samsung’s well-optimized OneUI interface, but it does affect gaming performance. The 9611 can run most games best at low-medium graphics settings and things start to crash at high graphics settings.
. After testing these games, it became clear that the M31s were not meant to be played. The phone heats up on medium or high graphics settings and also takes time to cook. This is a problem, and after about 45 minutes of playing you will notice noticeable lag, slow loading of characters in the game, etc.
Unfortunately, this was also an issue with the M31 and Samsung seems to have missed an opportunity by keeping the same chipset while building on charging speed and a better design. Qualcomm’s counterparts are better in this area, making the Poco X2 (730G) a better choice if gaming is on your mind.

If you don’t want to avoid Chinese products, you can’t ignore the better build quality of Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro Max (Rs 16,999) and Poco X2 (Rs 17,499), both of which are more flexible. everyday use, offer better cameras with more details and give you great gaming performance.
They cost a little less, but lack the beautiful AMOLED display, 6000 mAh battery and interface.
