Without a doubt, the main feature of the Galaxy A7 is its triple rear camera. There is a standard 24-megapixel sensor with an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens and a 5-megapixel depth sensor for nice bokeh images.
But Samsung’s mid-range model has more than that to immerse you in. The front of the phone has a nice 6 inch full HD + 18:9 Super AMOLED screen and inside is Samsung’s latest mid-range processor, the octa-core Exynos 7885 clocked at 2.2GHz. It is supported by 4GB of RAM and there is also 32GB of internal storage which can be expanded by a further 400GB via microSD.
The Samsung Galaxy A7 is the cheapest triple camera phone on the market and costs just £309. That’s less than Huawei’s triple-camera P20 Pro and Mate 20 Pro models.

That said, Samsung has a few new budget and mid-priced options. The Galaxy A9 comes with a total of four rear-facing cameras, and the J6 Plus (£249) and J4 Plus (£169) are also starting to appear in phone shops across the country.
The Galaxy A7 also has competition from other manufacturers. Xiaomi’s awesome Pocophone F1 offers flagship innards at a wallet-friendly price, and the Moto G6 Plus is a great choice if you’re looking to save even more money.
The obvious comparison point of the Galaxy A7 is the Huawei P20 Pro. Its height, slim chassis, bright color and three rear cameras are kind of amazing, and it’s a huge compliment for Samsung as the P20 Pro costs hundreds of pounds more. The glossy back panel of the A7 looks beautiful, glowing beautifully when lit.
Turn the phone over and luckily you’ll see a notch display. The front and rear bezels are not exactly hidden, but the screen is cut off close to the left and right edges. As is typical with mid-range phones these days, there is no physical home button and the fingerprint sensor is placed on the side on the right edge of the phone alongside the power and volume controls. I like this setting as I find where my thumb naturally slides when I pick up a phone it reduces the clutter behind the phone. Samsung also includes a 3.5mm headphone jack.

At the bottom is an old-school micro USB port for charging and data transfer. That’s fine, but it means the A7 doesn’t benefit from the fast charging speeds of its USB-C rivals.
The A7’s display specs are great for a phone at this price. You get a Super AMOLED 2,200 x 1,080 (Full HD+) panel wrapped in 2.5D Gorilla Glass 4 which is durable for protection from drops and objects.
Perhaps most surprisingly, our ColorMunki calibrator has confirmed that the display can reproduce 100% of the sRGB color gamut with an effectively infinite contrast ratio. That’s not surprising given Samsung’s excellent Super AMOLED technology, but it does mean this £309 phone is as good as rivals that cost more than twice the price.
Powering the Galaxy A7 is Samsung’s own Exynos 7885 octa-core chipset clocked at 2.2GHz. This is the same processor found in the slightly more expensive Galaxy A8 and it comes with the same 4GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage (an additional 400GB via microSD slot).

It is not surprising that the work is the same. In the Geekbench 4 single and multi-CPU tests, the Galaxy A7 scored 1,483 and 3,935, which represent enough power to provide a smooth Android experience. It’s not a great score, though: Despite the same price tag, Xiaomi’s Snapdragon 845-powered Pocophone F1 offers more than double the performance.
It’s a similar story when it comes to gaming performance. The integrated ARM Mali-G71 MP2 GPU achieved an average frame rate of 15fps on the GFXBench Manhattan 3.0 display test, which is low for a modern phone. I have often seen frame breaks in intensive Android games like Fortnite and Asphalt 9: Legends.
Where the A7 excels is its battery life. In our video playback test, its 3,300mAh battery lasted 17 hours and 43 minutes before charging. That’s miles ahead of the Pocophone F1 and similarly priced competitors.

Then about the cameras. The three lenses are stacked vertically on the left side of the phone with the flash below. It’s a neat and clean design that leaves the sleek rear panel largely untouched – even better for passengers to admire.
The main camera unit has a 24-megapixel sensor with f/1.7 lens, an 8-megapixel sensor with f/2.4 wide-angle lens and a 5-megapixel f/2.2-depth sensor. Working together, these can take some truly amazing photos. The A7’s shots of London’s skyline on a gloomy Wednesday morning look excellent, with crisp, well-defined details and colors that look just right.
The low-light performance isn’t all that impressive, though. There is no optical image stabilization, so sensitivity is increased, resulting in noticeable noise and unnatural processing. Even so, the relatively wide apertures provide better images than the rear-facing snapper of the Moto G6 Plus. Video looks pretty standard with a maximum resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 at 30fps.
With its long-lasting battery, sleek design, and fairly well-performing triple camera, the Galaxy A7 should be on the fast track to perfection. Unfortunately, when it comes to performance, the Thunder A7 is beaten out by Xiaomi’s Pocophone F1, which offers flagship power for a very similar price. If you have £300 burning a hole in your pocket, this is the phone I would wholeheartedly recommend.
