Update Samsung Galaxy A51 Specifications And Price Review

The Samsung Galaxy A51 offers a nice design and an attractive OLED display, but it’s hampered by decent performance, a camera that performs poorly in low light, and a relatively short battery life.

One look at the $399 Samsung Galaxy A51 and its list of features and you might wonder why anyone would need the $1,000 Galaxy S20. You get a 6.5-inch OLED screen, four rear cameras and a huge 4,000mAh battery for a very reasonable price.

There’s just one problem: Samsung may have stepped up its mid-range phone game, but so has the competition. And while the Galaxy A51 can claim some advantages over the similarly priced iPhone SE 2020 and Google Pixel 3a, it still suffers from sometimes poor performance, low-light photography that often fails to impress, and battery life that’s only decent.

Indeed, this is one of the best budget phones out there; although, as you’ll see in our Samsung Galaxy A51 review, it’s more of a jack of all trades than a jack of all trades.

Samsung Galaxy A Series (2020): Specs, Price, Release, And More

The $399 Samsung Galaxy A51 was announced on April 9. You can buy it directly from Samsung or through a variety of carriers, including Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, and Xfinity Mobile. Amazon also sells an unlocked version.

Only one configuration of the Galaxy A51 is available in the US, and it comes with 4GB of RAM and a whopping 128GB of storage. If you need more space, you can add a microSD card of up to 512 GB.

While $399 is a fair price for a phone with all the features the Galaxy A51 boasts, Samsung is running a number of promotions to make it even better. The company is offering up to $220 in Galaxy A51 credit if you trade in a Galaxy S9, Note 9 or earlier; iPhone X or older; or Pixel 3, 3 XL or 3a. With a qualifying trade-in, you can also pay off an unlocked Galaxy A51 over 24 months with zero percent interest, for $14.58 per month. For a limited time, Samsung is even giving away a free pair of first-generation Galaxy Buds with every A51 purchase.

One tip for buyers: Be on the lookout for alternative models of the Galaxy A51 floating around in stores around the web. If the price seems to good to be true, chances are you’re watching the Latin American or International variant, not the US release tuned for home networks.

Samsung Galaxy A31 Vs Samsung Galaxy A51: What’s The Difference?

Many phone makers like to tout how their flagship designs are pared down to more affordable mid-range models, and Samsung sounded similar about the Galaxy A51. However, to my surprise, I found that I actually prefer the look and feel of the A51 to the extended Galaxy S20 family.

There are several reasons for this. First, the A51 is light – very light. Samsung has always done a great job of making lightweight phones that still feel well made, and the A51 shows that. Its 6.5-inch screen is nearly two inches larger than the 4.7-inch panel in Apple’s new iPhone SE, but the A51 weighs just 0.8 ounces more. Holding them each in one hand, you can tell the Galaxy is a little heavier, but not as much as you’d expect.

Second, the A51’s screen is flat, which is actually a breath of fresh air from the inevitable curved panels in every modern premium phone. It’s hard to put your finger on it, but a flat screen is easier to manage and easier to work with. Some curved panels look downright weird (eg the Motorola Edge Plus), while others are magnets for accidental touches, exacerbated by poor palm-rejection software (eg the OnePlus 8 Pro). But the A51 is attractive, with super thin bezels and a screen that perfectly follows the silhouette of the body. These aspects in particular make it feel like a more expensive phone than before.

But it gets even better: The A51 has a headphone jack – something you won’t find on Apple’s budget new iPhones. Unfortunately, it’s not IP-rated waterproof; in fairness, it’s a rarity at this price.

Samsung Galaxy A51 With Quad Rear Cameras, Infinity O Display Launched In India: Price, Specifications

I have only two minor criticisms of the A51’s design. First, while the iPhone SE and Pixel 3a have stereo speakers mounted on the earpiece and bottom of the frame, the A51 channels all sound through the latter. At this price it’s not a problem, although it does lead to the classic muffled sound problem of holding the phone sideways while playing games.

Second, the materials that make up the A51 don’t feel cheap, though they’re no replacement for the glass-and-metal iPhone SE or the partially matte-textured Pixel 3a.

Samsung actually has a name for what it uses on the back – it’s officially known as ‘glass’ – and I’m happy to say that it looks more like real glass than the groan-inducing name it might lead you to believe. I didn’t even mind the subtle color of our Prism Crush Black review unit. Usually that sort of thing looks like glare to me, although the A51 doesn’t catch light in an obnoxious way. However, I could do without the messy lines and triangular design on the back, as it’s a constant reminder of the phone’s budget roots.

One of the best things about last year’s Galaxy A50 was its AMOLED display – a luxury usually reserved for more premium devices. The new Galaxy A51 retains that great panel, except this time it measures 6.5 inches from corner to corner, retaining full HD resolution.

All OLED panels are not created equal, so the Galaxy A51’s screen can’t match the astronomical peak brightness or high dynamic range of the Galaxy S20 series’ displays. The A51 boasts a full-screen brightness of 565 nits, which is pretty high — though you’ll only see that kind of brightness outdoors in bright sunlight. Usually the most manual adjustment
