Samsung Galaxy A51 Cell Phone Review

The Samsung Galaxy A51 is a relatively affordable Android phone to buy if you can’t afford the Samsung Galaxy S22 or Galaxy S21, or you can’t pick up the Samsung Galaxy S20 Fan Edition in your region.

The lower price comes with obvious downgrades from Samsung’s more expensive phones. We will cover that in more detail in this Samsung Galaxy A51 review, but in short, the back is more plastic than glass, the cameras are not that good (even if there are five), the chipset is less powerful, and beautiful. extras like water resistance are missing.

The classic Samsung features you get in the Galaxy A51 include a bold AMOLED screen and software that resembles the Galaxy S21 series.

At $399 / £329 / AU$599, the Samsung A51 looks like a surefire hit. However, there are more obvious performance issues here than in alternatives like the Moto G8 Plus and Oppo Reno 2Z. Android is moving too slowly. Sometimes even part of the camera app. Fortunately, games aren’t affected that badly – PUBG fans, don’t worry.

Don’t expect miracles from cameras. As with many affordable quad-camera phones, it looks more like a dual-lens phone with some accessories intact, although its tertiary macro camera is better than most in its class and offers a different way to take photos.

Since we reviewed this device, Samsung has also introduced a slightly improved version called the Galaxy A51 5G. We still have to properly test this device, but the big difference is that it has a different chipset with an additional 5G connection.

The company has also now followed up the Galaxy A51 with the Samsung Galaxy A52 5G. This – like 5G – has other improvements such as a 120Hz screen, a larger 4,500mAh battery, more megapixels on the main camera and a different chipset.

Of course, it costs more, so the Samsung Galaxy A51 is still worth considering – it’s not one of Samsung’s best phones, but it’s still a solid choice.

Samsung Galaxy A51 Review

The Samsung Galaxy A51 is priced at $399 / £329 / AU$599, so it’s quite an affordable phone and competes more closely with the likes of the £379 OnePlus Nord (about $480, AU$680) and the £299 Moto G 5G Plus. (about $375, $535).

Other alternatives include the $429/£419/AU$719 iPhone SE (2022) and the $349/£349/AU$599 Google Pixel 4a. Galaxy A51 are not.

The model we reviewed didn’t, but Samsung later released a 5G version for $500/£429 (about AU$700). While it is more expensive than the 4G version, it is not as expensive as 5G phones.

The prices we listed above are, of course, introductory prices, but if you shop around, you’ll probably find the Samsung Galaxy A51 cheaper right now. At the time of writing, we’ve seen it retail for $290 / £230 / AU$390.

Oh? Samsung Gaat De Galaxy A51 Minder Vaak Updates Geven

You can pick up the Samsung Galaxy A51 in most countries where Samsung sells the phone, although the 5G version is not available in Australia. It’s weird and we don’t know if it’s permanent or just a temporary condition.

However, if you want to spend a little more, you may also want to consider the new Samsung Galaxy A52 5G.

The Samsung Galaxy A51 offers some of the design features of Samsung’s highest-end phones. However, there are some clues that it is not part of the expensive Galaxy S series.

The bezels on the display are thin and the front camera is located in one of Samsung’s ‘Infinity O’ holes. However, the back is plastic rather than glass, and the front camera doesn’t connect to the front glass like most.

Of course, the front glass covers the selfie camera. However, the layers underneath are much more reflective, making the Samsung A51 selfie camera stand out like a tiny monocle.

The side buttons are also plastic. The result? The construction of the Samsung Galaxy A51 is closer to the Motorola Moto G8 or Oppo A5 2020 than to the top Samsung.

However, it has a slightly prominent back. Like other recent A-series phones, the Samsung Galaxy A51 has a finish of intersecting lines, cutting shapes on the back, each with a slightly different look. The lower part has a striped texture of thin lines, for example, under the upper plastic layer.

It’s a relatively subtle look, but when the Samsung Galaxy A51 catches the light, you’ll see shimmering iridescent tones that tend to merge into laser stripes across the curved edges.

From a distance, it could be an expensive Samsung, especially since the large four-lens camera on the back looks advanced. This phone is also reasonably sized, built for media and wider than the Galaxy S20.

Like most phones at its price point, the Samsung Galaxy A51 doesn’t offer official water resistance. It does have a 3.5mm headphone port, though, which is useful if you haven’t made the jump to Bluetooth headphones.

It also has an in-screen fingerprint sensor, another attempt to make the Samsung Galaxy A51 look like a high-end phone. However, this is not a great scanner. It is slower than most and cannot detect fingers if they are even slightly wet or if you are not very careful with the position of the thumb.

The Samsung Galaxy A51 has a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080 x 2400. On paper, this is an immediate win, as many phones at this price point have LCD screens.

Samsung Galaxy A51 Review: Great Screen, Bad Performance

OLEDs tend to provide much deeper colors and still have better contrast than LCDs, because they use illuminated pixels instead of a universal backlight. However, this isn’t one of Samsung’s biggest OLED panels, and there are a few glaring issues.

Less advanced OLED panels get a slight blue tint from an angle, usually when you turn the phone screen left or right. It’s rarely a big deal because we all look at our phones from the front, right?

But this effect comes from a different direction in the Samsung A51. Keep it relaxed and tilted and the top of the display has this blue tint. It’s only noticeable when significant parts of the screen are white, like on web pages, but it’s immediately apparent that this isn’t one of Samsung’s best OLEDs.

The Samsung Galaxy A51 also has other usual benefits of an OLED display. Its optional Vivid screen mode looks very rich and the contrast in a dark room is clearly much better than LCD phones for the price.

The brightness of the screen is also quite good, if not in the same league as the Galaxy S20. Maximum brightness seems conservative for indoor use, but the Samsung Galaxy A51 kicks into high gear when you take it outside on a bright day. It also plays with colors and contrast to increase visibility in difficult conditions.

It’s not bright enough to comfortably watch movies in direct sunlight, but the interface and web pages look clear enough.

The Samsung Galaxy A51 is also certified for HD Netflix from launch, but does not support HDR video.

Problems aside, it’s a good phone for streaming video, though anywhere but inside, the reflective pinhole camera (albeit small) is doubly distracting.

Bio Case For Samsung Galaxy A51

The Samsung Galaxy A51 has four rear cameras. But when you first turn on your camera, you may wonder what half of them do.

There is no zoom, a classic sign of a multi-camera setup where additional lenses are used to magnify the numbers. We cannot blame only Samsung for this, since it is not easy to fit a good zoom camera in a phone at a reasonable price.

You have a 48MP main camera, a 12MP ultra-wide and a pair of 5MP cameras used for close-up macro shots and depth shots with blurred backgrounds.

It is not difficult to find the filler: these two 5MP cameras. However, this case is much less flashy than, say, what Oppo has tried recently. The Oppo A9 2020 has some very useless 2MP cameras.

Galaxy A51 5g To Get Android 13, But Updates Will Be Less Frequent

The Samsung Galaxy A51’s 5MP macro camera won’t see you win Wildlife Photographer of the Year, but it’s fun to play with. You can get very close to your subject and shoot subjects that the main camera won’t even focus on. Its main problem, apart from the acceptable image quality, is blur. A little hand movement will erase your photos unless the lighting level is good.

This is still a useful macro camera and offers another way of thinking about how to shoot. Samsung
