Last year, 3 of the 5 best-selling phones in the world, according to Counterpoint Research, were Samsung phones, coming in third, fourth and fifth, respectively, behind the iPhone XR and 11. If you live in the United States, when you think of Samsung, you probably think of the Galaxy S or Note – but the best-selling Samsung phone is the mid-range Galaxy A phone.

Samsung is making a big push to sell more of these phones in the US with the $399 Galaxy A51. That price puts it in direct competition with the iPhone SE, but there are other Android phones under $500. What makes the A51 different is Samsung’s marketing budget and partnerships. It’s available unlocked on the Amazon and Samsung websites, which is important for mid-range Samsung devices, and it’s also available on AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and Xfinity Mobile.

Compared to the iPhone SE, the main attraction of the A51 is the large 6.5-inch OLED screen. Samsung says the phone is “amazing” in three specs: screen, camera,
Battery life. It also did a crazy meme-filled ad to drive those points home. (You should check it out because the ads are really awesome.) Unfortunately, the Galaxy A51 isn’t very good.
The Galaxy A51 doesn’t look or feel like a cheap phone at all. It is large and well integrated. Samsung says the material it’s made of is called “Glasstic,” which sounds tougher than it sounds. It looks almost like glass, but has a slightly hollow feel that you can get from plastic.
It comes with 128GB of internal storage, which borders on the price of $399. In addition, you can expand it using microSD memory. There’s also a headphone jack, which is a welcome inclusion at any price point, but in this case it’s a little more important than usual.

My favorite part of the Galaxy A51 is the screen. It’s just a good 6.5-inch OLED, bright even in sunlight. If you’re looking for advanced screen technology like ambient color, high refresh rates, or even high resolution, look elsewhere. But at 1080 x 2400, there are more than enough pixels, even for this screen size. I have seen a lot of low rent large screen in Android phones, and this is not one of them.
Every phone is discounted, and the $399 phone is over $1,000. So phone manufacturers have to choose their priorities, and Samsung has clearly chosen the screen. Considering it’s something people look at and interact with hundreds of times a day, it’s a good choice.
But I can take care – not the screen, but what’s underneath – especially the hole selfie camera. I have no problem with hitting. In fact, I generally like them to have scratches of any size. However, for reasons beyond comprehension, Samsung placed a small chrome ring around the camera. It catches at certain angles when the light approaches it, and then it’s hard not to see. It’s strange.
Another thing under the screen is an optical fingerprint sensor. I’m not sure if Samsung just doesn’t have enough iterations with these sensors or what, but it’s terribly slow. It may take up to a second for the green animation to vibrate to let you know the phone is unlocked. It’s not the most accurate sensor, especially in direct sunlight.
Should You Buy The Galaxy A51 In 2021?
Unfortunately, this rating also applies to the processor and RAM. In the US, most of Samsung’s flagship phones use Qualcomm processors, but the A51 uses the Samsung Exynos 9611, a mid-range chip that’s not up to the task of making this phone feel elegant. Apps take a long time to load – especially if they haven’t been opened recently and thus aren’t running on 4GB of RAM.
When you’re in a browser or app, things move at a decent enough clip. But every now and then it has problems displaying the screen or loading the next thing in your feed.
As I said, different phone manufacturers have to choose their priorities in these less expensive phones. For example, Apple kept the old iPhone 8 chassis with a smaller display and big bezels for the iPhone SE, but put the fastest mobile processor available: A13 Bionic. Samsung chose different.
Battery life is good, but not quite up to Samsung’s claims of “long life”. I only got one day – definitely better than I can do on the iPhone SE. But with a 4,000 mAh cell phone and a 1080p screen, I’m a little surprised I didn’t get better. In theory, these specifications should add up to something very impressive, and I wonder if the Exynos processor is partly to blame.

Finally, there is the camera system, which contains more lenses than necessary. The main lens has a 48-megapixel sensor that produces 12-megapixel images by default. These images, like almost all cameras today, are sufficient in good light. I was pleasantly surprised to see a good white balance, which Samsung sometimes lacks. But Samsung’s other bad tendency to raise unnatural shadows remains.
You probably know what’s coming: It falls in less light—worse than the iPhone SE, in fact. And when you really zoom in to see the details on the A51, it’s a lot more impressive than you’ll get on any other smartphone camera – including 48 megapixels.
With 12-megapixel ultra-wide and 5-megapixel macro camera, each is more fun than a great shot. Have fun! I love these cameras. There is also a “5-megapixel” depth camera, which seems useless, at least when it comes to portrait mode. Finally, the selfie camera is 32 megapixels and produces images that are often detailed.
Finally, the software. Samsung’s One UI customization on Android continues to make using phones with large screens even more beautiful. But Samsung’s willingness to allow carriers to clean their phones with crapware: My Verizon-based review unit was loaded with games and services no one wanted. I would also like to say that I believe that this phone will receive software updates for more than two or three years.

I think that in the three “amazing” things that Samsung promises, the Galaxy A51 only hits one and a half of them. The screen is amazing, the battery life is quite good and the camera is not impressive. The Pixel 3A (and possibly the upcoming 4A) and the iPhone SE both disappoint with how good their cameras are for $399. However, the A51’s photos definitely look like they come from a mid-range phone.
It’s hard to make a good $400 phone, and no one is amazing in every possible metric. But you want at least some parts of the phone to feel like they come from something more expensive. Apart from the screen, not enough of the Galaxy A51 is amazing.
Every smart device now requires you to agree to a set of terms and conditions – a contract that no one actually reads – before using it. It is impossible for us to read and analyze each of these agreements. But we’ve started counting on the fact that you have to click “Agree” when checking out the device to use them, because most people don’t read these agreements and certainly can’t negotiate them.

There may be others. For example, I already have a Samsung account, so I don’t need to accept additional terms. Samsung’s Weather app also has its own privacy policy, which may include sharing information with weather.com.
Finally, if you get the A51 version of the carrier. The Verizon version we tested had options for Verizon location, app data, cloud services, and even a “Digital secure” virus service – not necessary, but all static and annoying during the installation process.
Final summary: There are four mandatory contracts, about eight optional contracts that most users will want to agree to, and four or more service provider contracts that I hope most users will say no to.
