Samsung Galaxy A (2020) Series Debuts W/ Galaxy A51 5g
The Samsung Galaxy A51 is a relatively inexpensive Android phone that you can buy if you can’t stretch the Samsung Galaxy S22 or Galaxy S21 or can’t get a Samsung Galaxy S20 Fan Edition in your area.
A lower price comes with clear downgrades from Samsung’s more expensive phones. We’ll talk about that in more detail in this Samsung Galaxy A51 review, but in short, the back is plastic instead of glass, the cameras aren’t very good (although there are five of them), the chipset is less powerful, and the extras are absent, useful like water resistance.
The classic Samsung specs you get in the Galaxy A51 include a bold AMOLED display and software that resembles the Galaxy S21 series.
At $399 / £329 / AU$599, the Samsung A51 looks like a surefire hit. However, there are more glaring performance issues here than with alternatives like the Moto G8 Plus and Oppo Reno 2Z. Android moves a bit too slowly. Sometimes parts of the camera app do this too. Luckily, games aren’t as badly affected – PUBG fans, don’t worry.

Don’t expect miracles from the cameras either. As with many affordable quad-camera phones, this one is more like a dual-lens phone with a few half-baked extras, though its tertiary macro camera is better than most in this class and offers a different way to shoot. pictures.
Since we reviewed this device, Samsung has also introduced a slightly modified version called Galaxy A51 5G. We haven’t tested this device properly yet, but the big difference is that it has a different chipset with additional 5G connectivity.
The company also followed up the Galaxy A51 with the Samsung Galaxy A52 5G. This one, in addition to having 5G, has other improvements such as a 120 Hz screen, a larger 4,500 mAh battery, more megapixels on its main camera and a different chipset.
Of course, it also costs more, so the Samsung Galaxy A51 is still worth considering – it’s not one of Samsung’s best phones, but it’s still a solid choice.

The Samsung Galaxy A51 costs $399 / £329 / AU$599, so it’s a fairly affordable phone and rivals the likes of the £379 OnePlus Nord (about $480, AU$680) and Moto G 5G Plus more. at £299 (about $375, AU$535).
Other alternatives include the $429 / £419 / AU$719 iPhone SE (2022) and the $349 / £349 / AU$599 Google Pixel 4a. are 5G phones, while the latest and the Galaxy A51 they are not.
Well, the model we reviewed isn’t, but Samsung has since released a 5G version for $500 / £429 (around AU$700). Although it is more expensive than the 4G version, it is not too expensive with 5G phones.
Of course, the prices we’ve listed above are introductory prices, but if you shop around, you can probably find the Samsung Galaxy A51 for less now. As of this writing, we’ve seen it on sale for $290 / £230 / AU$390.

You can get the Samsung Galaxy A51 in most countries where Samsung sells phones, although the 5G version is not available in Australia. It’s curious and we don’t know if this is a permanent or just temporary situation.

The Samsung Galaxy A51 offers some of the design features of high-end Samsung phones. But there are freebies that aren’t part of the beloved Galaxy S series.
The bezels of the display are thin, and the front camera sits in one of Samsung’s “Infinity O” holes. However, the back is plastic rather than glass, and the front camera doesn’t blend into the front glass as well as most.

Of course, the front glass covers the selfie camera. But the underlying layers are much more reflective, making the Samsung A51’s selfie camera stand out like a tiny monocle.
The side buttons are also plastic. The result? The build of the Samsung Galaxy A51 is closer to that of a Motorola Moto G8 or Oppo A5 2020 than a high-end Samsung.
However, it has a somewhat distinctive back. Like other recent A-series phones, the Samsung Galaxy A51 has a finish of intersecting lines, cutting shapes on the back, each looking slightly different. The underside has a fine striped texture of fine lines, for example, placed under the top plastic layer.
It’s a relatively subtle look, but when the Samsung Galaxy A51 catches the light, you’ll see shimmering rainbow tones that tend to cluster into laser streaks around the curved edges.

It can pass for an expensive Samsung by far, especially since the large quad-lens camera housing on the back looks advanced. This phone is also decently sized, designed for media and wider than the Galaxy S20.
Like most phones at this price, the Samsung Galaxy A51 doesn’t offer any official water resistance. But it does have a 3.5mm headphone port, which is handy if you haven’t yet made the jump to Bluetooth headphones.
It also has an in-display fingerprint scanner, another attempt to make the Samsung Galaxy A51 look like a high-end phone. However, it is not a very good scanner. It’s slower than most and won’t recognize your fingers if they’re even slightly wet or if you’re not paying close attention to your thumb position.
The Samsung Galaxy A51 has a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display with 1080 x 2400 resolution. It’s an instant win on paper, as many phones at this price point have LCD screens.

OLEDs tend to provide much deeper colors and still have better contrast than LCDs because they use illuminated pixels rather than a universal backlight. However, it’s not one of Samsung’s best OLED panels, and there are some glaring issues.
Less advanced OLED panels take on a slightly blue tint at an angle, usually when you turn the phone screen left or right. It’s rarely a big deal, because we all look at our phones head-on, right?
But this effect comes the other way in the Samsung A51. Hold it relaxed and tilted and the top of the screen will have that blue tint. This is only apparent when significant parts of the screen are white, such as on web pages, but it immediately shows that this isn’t one of Samsung’s best OLEDs.
The Samsung Galaxy A51 gets the other usual benefits of an OLED display. Its optional Vivid screen mode looks very saturated and the contrast in a dark room is clearly much better than LCD phones at this price.
Samsung Galaxy A51 5g Review: A Strong 5g Bargain
Screen brightness is also quite good, if not in the same league as the Galaxy S20. Peak brightness seems conservative when used indoors, but the Samsung Galaxy A51 gives an edge when taken outside on a sunny day. It also plays with color and contrast to increase visibility in difficult conditions.
It’s not bright enough for you to comfortably watch movies in direct sunlight, but the interface and web pages look bright enough.
The Samsung Galaxy A51 has also been certified for Netflix HD since launch, but does not support HDR video.
Issues aside, it’s a good phone for video streaming, though anywhere but inside the (so tiny) reflective piercing camera is doubly distracting.
Buy Galaxy A51
The Samsung Galaxy A51 has four rear cameras. But when you first turn on the camera, you might wonder what half of them do.
There’s no zoom, which is the classic sign of a multi-camera setup where additional lenses are used to boost the numbers. We can’t entirely blame Samsung for this, as it’s not easy to squeeze a good zoom camera into a reasonably priced phone.
You get a 48MP main camera, a 12MP ultra-wide angle, and a pair of 5MP cameras used for close-up macro images as well as background blur shots.
It’s not hard to spot the filler: those two 5MP cameras. But this case is much less striking than, for example, what Oppo recently attempted. The Oppo A9 2020 has a pair of extremely useless 2MP cameras.
