Original article: December 12, 2019 (7:36 AM ET): The Samsung Galaxy A50 was one of the company’s best mid-range phones in 2019, and now it’s announced that it’s continuing with the Galaxy A51.
The Galaxy A51 was announced earlier today in Vietnam and its design seems to be in line with recent leaks. That means a center-mounted notch and a rectangular camera housing with four rear cameras.
Samsung’s new mid-range phone has an unnamed octa-core chipset (four cores at 2.3 GHz and four at 1.7 GHz), 4, 6 or 8 GB of RAM and 64 or 128 GB of expandable storage. Underneath the 6.5-inch FHD+ OLED screen, you also get a 4,000mAh battery with 15W charging and a fingerprint scanner.
In terms of photography, the Galaxy A51 offers a 32 MP selfie camera and the already mentioned quad rear camera. You can expect to find a 48MP f/2.0 primary camera, a 5MP macro camera, a 12MP ultra-wide shooter and a 5MP depth sensor on the back.

Samsung’s latest mid-range phone is scheduled to arrive in Vietnam on December 27 for VND 7,990,000 (~$346). There’s no word on wider availability, but Samsung Vietnam is offering a Bluetooth headset and 10,000mAh power bank to customers who pre-order the device.
It wasn’t the only phone revealed today, as SamMobile reports that Samsung quietly announced the Galaxy A71. The device has a design similar to the A51, with a centrally placed punch and a rectangular quad camera body.
Otherwise, the Galaxy A71 has a larger 6.7-inch FHD+ AMOLED display (with in-screen fingerprint), an unnamed octa-core chipset (believed to be the Snapdragon 730), 6/8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. It also apparently gets a 4,500mAh battery with 25W charging.
Samsung’s device appears to be a very versatile camera platform with a 64MP primary sensor, a 5MP macro camera, a 12MP ultra-wide sensor and a 5MP depth sensor. Selfies are handled by a 32 MP camera inside the hole.

One look at the $399 Samsung Galaxy A51 and its laundry list of features might make you wonder why anyone would need a $1,000 Galaxy S20. You get a 6.5 inch OLED screen, four rear cameras and a large 4000 mAh battery for a very reasonable price.
There’s just one problem: Samsung may have stepped up its mid-range phone game, but so have the competition. And while the Galaxy A51 has some advantages over the similarly priced iPhone SE 2020 and Google Pixel 3a, it still suffers from occasional poor performance, low-light photography that often doesn’t work, and battery life.

A word of advice to buyers: be wary of alternative Galaxy A51 models floating around retailers online. If the price seems good, and it is, you’re probably looking at the Latin American or international version, not the US release adapted for domestic networks.
Many phone makers like to show how their flagship designs trickle down to more affordable mid-range models, and Samsung is making similar noises about the Galaxy A51. But in a surprising twist, I found I preferred the look and feel of the A51 to the extended Galaxy S20 family.
There are several reasons for this. First, the A51 is light – really light. Samsung has always done a great job of making featherweight phones that still feel good, and the A51 is a testament to that. Its 6.5-inch screen is nearly two inches larger than the 4.7-inch panel in Apple’s new iPhone SE, yet the A51 tips the scale at just 0.8 ounces. When you hold them all in one hand, you can see that the Galaxy is a bit more powerful, but not nearly as much as you’d think.
Second, the display on the A51 is flat, which is actually a breath of fresh air from the curved panels that are inevitable in all modern premium devices. It’s hard to put your finger on it, but a flat screen is simply easier to use and easier to live with. Some curved panels look odd (eg the Motorola Edge Plus), while others act as magnets for accidental presses, exacerbated by poor palm rejection software (eg the OnePlus 8 Pro). But the A51 is attractive with super-thin frames and a screen that perfectly follows the silhouette of the frame. These aspects in particular make the phone feel more expensive than it really is.

But it gets better: the A51 has a headphone jack — something you won’t find on Apple’s new low-cost iPhone. Unfortunately, however, it is not IP-rated waterproof; to be fair it’s a rarity at this price.
I have only two small criticisms of the A51’s design. First, while the iPhone SE and Pixel 3a have stereo speakers mounted in the earpiece and the bottom of the frame, all the A51’s channels sound through the latter. At this price, it’s not a deal breaker, although it does lead to the classic mute problem when you hold the phone sideways while playing.
Second, the materials that make up the A51 don’t feel cheap, though they’re no substitute for the glass-and-metal iPhone SE or the semi-matte textured Pixel 3a.
Samsung actually has a name for what it uses on the back – officially called “glass” – and I’m happy to say it looks more like real glass.
