About this Samsung Galaxy A51 review: I used the Galaxy A51 on Google Fi for six days. At the time of review, the phone was running One UI 2.1 based on Android 10.
The Samsung Galaxy A51 is made of what Samsung calls “Glasstic”. It offers a higher quality than pure plastic phones, but it is not as premium as the Samsung Galaxy S21 series. It’s still plastic, but I didn’t mind the plastic like other phones in this price range. The phone is sleek but not slippery and is light at only 158 grams. For comparison: the OnePlus 9 Pro weighs 197 grams.
The edge of the device is made of aluminum and feels very high-quality. On the right side you’ll find the power button and volume buttons with the USB-C port, speakers and the headphone jack on the bottom. On the left side of the phone is a dual SIM slot that can accommodate two SIMs and an SD card up to 512 GB. While most phones serve as a second slot to allow the use of a SIM or microSD card, the A51 has two dedicated SIM slots and a separate microSD card slot. Nice to see that.

I really like the crazy color and design on the back of the device. It’s definitely different, and I appreciate fun colored phones. The model I have is Prism Crush Black, which gives off a rainbow color when the light hits it at the right angle. It also comes in Prism Crush Blue and Prism Crush White, which offer similar iridescent reflections.
The speakers on the phone were loud, but there was no sense of bass. I don’t use the speakers to listen to music directly, but the headphone jack is a big plus.
For a sub-$400 phone, the Samsung Galaxy A51 has a surprisingly good screen. Most mid-range phones use LCD rather than OLED, but Samsung was able to pack a large OLED display with a much denser pixel count. It’s a 1080p screen. Since most high-end phones come in 1080p by default, this didn’t bother me. Colors were bright and vibrant, which is common with Samsung panels. It is awesome.
One annoying thing about this display is the hole-punch camera in the center of the phone. While I usually like cutouts, Samsung decided to put a silver metal ring around the camera, making it much more visible than without the ring. It’s not a deal breaker, but you’ll notice it even when the screen is off. I don’t understand why Samsung did this.
Samsung Galaxy A51 Review: Great Screen, Bad Performance
The Galaxy A51 has a built-in optical fingerprint reader. Unfortunately, the fingerprint reader is slow and inaccurate. It took about two seconds each time to register my fingerprint. In addition, when I used the device, the accuracy rate seemed to be 50%, which is very bad. For speed and accuracy, it’s better to use the pin lock or 2D face unlock option.
With a mid-range Exynos chip and just 4GB of RAM as standard, we didn’t expect the Samsung Galaxy A51 to deliver great performance. After using the device for a while and running benchmarks, we confirmed our fears.
I haven’t said this about a phone in a while, but the Samsung Galaxy A51 is slow. You may experience lag when opening apps and multitasking, and stuttering occurs when swiping through the UI. The phone used 1.9GB of 4GB of RAM even with all apps closed which is a really bad sign. During our testing, we came to the conclusion that modern versions of Android require around 6 GB of RAM for smooth operation, and this was confirmed by the device.
In benchmarks we saw a similar story. In our testing, the phone lags behind most devices. It has lagged behind the rest of the mid-range segment since launch, with the Snapdragon 700 series phones far outpacing the Galaxy A51’s Exynos processor. View the results below.

Samsung Galaxy A51 has a large battery of 4000 mAh. With a low-powered processor and a small amount of RAM, you’d hope the device would outlast the battery life. Honestly it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t as great as it should have been. The conversation lasted 29 hours, from 8 a.m. one day to 1 p.m. the next day. It’s certainly not as good as phones with larger batteries, but I’m glad it lasts at least a day. I have about four and a half hours of screen time on this device.
The A51 supports 15W charging, which isn’t the fastest. Given the original Google Pixel supported 18W charging in 2016, this feels a bit slow for 2020. Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S20 devices charge at 25W as standard, so I’d like to see at least 18W on the Galaxy A51.
For a sub-$400 phone, the Galaxy A51 has some pretty good cameras, and quite a few to boot. There’s a primary 48-megapixel sensor that packs 12MP photos, as well as wide-angle and macro lenses, a depth sensor and a 32MP front camera.
Dynamic range looked good on this camera set, but the images felt a little underexposed, probably to prevent the highlights from popping out. That said, some camera systems can push the shadows too high for dynamic range, creating an annoying gray cast in the shadows. Samsung phones have traditionally done this, so I was surprised to see the A51 not.

The colors were generally good, but the A51 oversaturated certain colors like blue and green. It can brighten up the sky and vegetation, but it made some photos look a bit cartoonish. Samsung has always done this with its camera systems, so I’m not surprised at all.
The depth sensor seemed to help quite a bit and I’m glad it worked more on humans than animals. Object detection and cropping was very accurate, although the bokeh looked a bit more natural. I was pleasantly surprised. Hair detection remained blurry, but this is more common with fake bokeh. This regimen also softens the skin more than I would like.
The selfie camera was also good with good dynamic range and color. The brightness was pretty good, but it was still oversaturated colors like green and blue.
The MSRP of the Samsung Galaxy A51 has dropped to just $349.99, and you can get it for much less. If you shop around, you can find the phone for less than $300. At this price point, it’s hard to ignore the value Samsung offers with the phone.

With the A51 you get a great screen, decent quality, some good cameras and even a headphone jack. It also offers three years of guaranteed software updates that guarantee support up to at least Android 12. While the build quality and screen are great, however, the poor performance of this phone is its Achilles heel. And for a retail price of $349, the competition is very, very high.
The iPhone SE has Apple’s latest processor and excellent build quality for the same price, while the Google Pixel 4a has a great Android experience and great camera for $350. If you’re willing to spend more than $1,000, Samsung offers also the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE, which has many of the same features as the full-fledged Galaxy S20. If you’re looking for something similar with a bit more power, the Samsung Galaxy A71 is also out, as is the Galaxy A51 5G – an improved version of the A51 with a faster chipset and larger battery.
If you want the latest mid-range device from Samsung, you can also check out the Galaxy A52 5G. It maintains solid build quality and long battery life while upgrading to the Snapdragon 750G SoC. You pay a little more at $499, but the improvements are worth it. Samsung hasn’t made many changes to the weak peripheral cameras, but the switch to 25W charging solves one of our biggest issues with the Galaxy A51.
