One look at the $399 Samsung Galaxy A51 and its extensive list of features and you might be wondering why anyone would need a $1,000 Galaxy S20. For a very reasonable price, you get a 6.5-inch OLED display, four rear cameras, and a large 4,000mAh battery.
There’s just one problem: Samsung has increased its range of mid-range phones, but so have the competition. And while the Galaxy A51 has some advantages over the similarly priced iPhone SE 2020 and Google Pixel 3a, it still suffers from sometimes subpar performance, low-light photography that often fails to impress, and battery life that’s only decent .
In fact, this is one of the best budget phones out there; However, as you’ll see in our Samsung Galaxy A51 review, it’s more of a jack of all trades than a master at it.
The $399 Samsung Galaxy A51 was released on April 9th. You can buy it unlocked direct from Samsung or through a variety of carriers including Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, and Xfinity Mobile. Amazon also sells the unlocked version.

Only one configuration of the Galaxy A51 is available in the US, which comes with 4GB of RAM and a generous 128GB of storage. If you need more storage, you can add a microSD card up to 512GB in size.
While $399 is a reasonable price for a phone with all the features of the Galaxy A51, Samsung is running a number of special promotions to push the deal even further. The company is offering up to $220 in credit for a Galaxy A51 when you trade in a Galaxy S9, Note 9 or older; iPhone X or older; or Pixel 3, 3 XL or 3a. With a qualifying trade-in, you can also pay off an unlocked Galaxy A51 for 24 months with zero percent interest for $14.58 per month. For a limited time, Samsung is even giving away a free pair of first-gen Galaxy Buds with every A51 purchase.
A word of advice for buyers: be wary of alternative Galaxy A51 models circulating at online retailers. If the price seems too high to be true, chances are you’re watching the Latin American or International variant rather than the US edition for domestic channels.
Many phone makers love touting how their flagship designs translate to cheaper mid-range models, and Samsung is making similar noises about the Galaxy A51. Shockingly, however, I’ve found that I actually like the look and feel of the A51 better than the extended Galaxy S20 family.

There are mutliple reasons for this. First, the A51 is light – really light. Samsung has always done a good job of building featherlight phones that still feel well made, and the A51 is a testament to that. The 6.5-inch display is almost two inches larger than the 4.7-inch panel in Apple’s new iPhone SE, and yet the A51 tips the scales at just 0.8 ounces. Holding each in one hand you can tell that the Galaxy is a bit heavier, but not as much as you might think.
Secondly, the A51’s display is flat, which is actually a breath of fresh air given the curved panels that are inevitable on any modern premium phone. It’s hard to say exactly, but a flat screen just feels easier to use and more comfortable. Some curved panels look weird upside down (e.g. Motorola Edge Plus), while others are magnets for accidental taps, made worse by poor palm rejection software (e.g. OnePlus 8 Pro). But the A51 is attractive, with its super-slim edges and a display that molds perfectly to the silhouette of the body. It is precisely these aspects that really make it seem like a more expensive phone than it is.
Better still, the A51 has a headphone jack – something you won’t find on Apple’s affordable new iPhone. Unfortunately, however, it’s not waterproof by IP rating; To be fair, it has to be said that this is a rarity in this price range.
I only have two small criticisms of the design of the A51. Firstly, while both the iPhone SE and Pixel 3a have stereo speakers mounted in the earcup and on the underside of the frame, the A51 routes all audio through the latter. At this price point, that’s not a problem, although it leads to the classic problem of the sound being muted if you move the phone sideways in your hand during a game.

Second, the materials that make up the A51 don’t feel cheap, although they’re no replacement for the glass-and-metal iPhone SE or the partially matte-textured Pixel 3a.
Samsung actually has a name for what it uses on the back – it’s officially known as “glassy” – and I’m happy to say it feels more like real glass than that irritating name would suggest. I disagree with the subtle iridescence on our test unit, the Prism Crush Black. I usually find this kind of thing intrusive, although the A51 doesn’t capture any distracting light. However, I could do without the frivolous lines and triangular designs on the back as they are a constant reminder of the phone’s budget roots.
One of the best things about last year’s Galaxy A50 was its AMOLED display – a luxury usually reserved for more premium devices. The new Galaxy A51 retains this impressive panel, except this time it measures 6.5 inches from corner to corner while maintaining a Full HD resolution.
Since not all OLED panels are created equal, the Galaxy A51’s screen can’t quite match the astronomical peak brightness or high dynamic range of the Galaxy S20 series displays. The A51 achieves a full-screen brightness of 565 nits, which is quite high – although you’ll only see this brightness outdoors in bright sunlight. Typically, the highest manual setting is around 353 nits, which is much weaker than the iPhone SE’s maximum 653 nits.

But of course the display of the iPhone SE is not OLED, but LCD. And because the iPhone’s screen is an LCD, it can’t deliver the rich color tones and deep blacks that the A51 regularly delivers.
Watching Ken Miles’ epic final laps in the movie Ford vs Ferrari on the Galaxy A51. I was struck by the sunlight breaking through the trees that line Le Mans’ Arnage corner and how the treetops were bathed in a warm glow as we exited the forest depths, suitably dark. I’ve gotten used to seeing this kind of contrast on flagship phone displays, but it’s something I’d never expect to see on devices as cheap as this Galaxy.
On the default Vivid setting – which is extremely saturated – the A51 delivered 212.2% of the sRGB color space, compared to 111.2% for the iPhone SE and 182.3% for the Pixel 3a. The A51’s Delta-E color accuracy also suffers with the Vivid profile, as the Samsung phone recorded a Delta-E of 0.30 under our light meter, compared to 0.20 and 0.18 respectively for the budget phones. Apple and Google phones. . (Numbers closer to zero are better in the Delta-E test.)
You might expect a camera or two from a $400 phone, but the Galaxy A51 has a whopping four on the back: a 48-megapixel wide-angle primary camera with f/2.0, backed by 12-megapixel ultra-wide, 5-megapixel Depth and 5 MP macro optics. A 32 MP sensor on the front handles selfie tasks.

That’s a whole lot of megapixels, and when the conditions are right, the A51 can capture plenty of detail and take photos that rival the iPhone SE’s best performance. Samsung’s Live Focus mode isn’t limited to people like Apple’s Portrait mode, so you can take shallow depth-of-field shots of anything – even that lantern. Overall, the iPhone’s white balance and lighting are realistic here, but I like the depth effects on the A51, although some details around the edges of the lantern are unacceptably blurred.
This ultrawide shooter shines even when the sun shines. The iPhone SE lacks a lens with a similarly comprehensive perspective, and as a result iPhone owners won’t be able to snap photos like this one of a backyard that the A51 delivered. Here, too, Apple’s device received a strangely warm note, which is not true under the given conditions. The Galaxy device’s shot isn’t perfect – the right corner is completely covered, for example – although overall the Samsung image has a surprising level of detail and good dynamic range as you transition from shadows to daylight
