Update Samsung Galaxy A50s 128gb Price Review

Update Samsung Galaxy A50s 128gb Price Review – We started this year with a slew of affordable Samsung Galaxy M-series and A-series smartphones as part of the company’s strategy to take on Xiaomi, Realme and others on their terms. Samsung has tackled almost every price point between Rs. 8000 and Rs. 20,000 in a very short time, sometimes with many options, due to the large number of models and variants that have been developed. It’s been a while since that series of launches and Samsung’s competitors have refreshed their tablets, so it was inevitable that we would see updated models from the Korean giant.

The price of the brand new Samsung Galaxy A50s starts at Rs. 22,999, which is a slight price hike over the Galaxy A50 ( review ). It joins the group shortly after the launch of the high-end Redmi K20 (Review) and a few other phones have seen price cuts placing them in this segment. Which of these phones can you choose in a budget of Rs. 25,000? We reviewed the Samsung Galaxy A50s to find out.

There isn’t much new when it comes to the look and feel of the Samsung Galaxy A50s. When we reviewed the Galaxy M20 ( review ), one of Samsung’s first aggressive models, we commented on how it felt and how it differentiated itself from the company’s previous models. Similarly, the Galaxy A50s could be mistaken for any number of phones from today’s big brands, no matter which angle you look at it.

The front of this phone is all-screen, with a small notch for the camera at the top (Samsung calls this design ‘Infinity-U’). The corners of the screen are rounded, the chin is quite thick, while the sides and top edges are very thin. The edges are slightly curved and we note with interest that this is one of the few phones we’ve reviewed recently that didn’t come with a plastic screen protector already attached, which we don’t mind and appreciate.

On the back, we have the only personality stamp that Samsung has chosen to display – an off-center geometric pattern with criss-crossing lines with different colors in each section. There are three options: Prism Crush Black, Prism Crush White and Prism Crush Violet – our review unit is the black version, but the background colors are various shades of gray.

Fortunately, this design doesn’t tend to pick up smudges and fingerprints like the Galaxy A50’s glass finish, but it still needs to be wiped down several times a day to keep it looking its best. There’s still a very slight prismatic effect under certain types of lighting, though it’s more subtle than the prismatic displays we’ve seen on this phone’s predecessor.

There’s a USB Type-C port at the bottom, along with a 3.5mm audio jack and a single speaker. The tray on the left has slots for two Nano-SIM cards and a microSD card. The power and volume buttons are all on the right, and the top is empty.

At 166g and 7.7mm thick, the Galaxy A50s is easy to use and easy to live with. You may have to stretch a bit to reach the top of the 6.4-inch screen, but other than that we had no complaints. The build quality is also quite good, although the phone still feels plasticky and not very premium. It is also not mentioned what type of glass was used for the screen.

We didn’t see any scratches or dents on the frame or back panel during our review, but we would have used this phone with a plastic case. Fortunately, one is included in the retail box. Samsung also threw in a 10W charger, a USB Type-C cable, 3.5mm wired headphones, a SIM eject tool, and a quick start guide.

The first thing you’ll notice about this phone when you turn it on is the sharp, bright Super AMOLED display. It measures 6.4 inches wide, but that’s cut to 6.2 inches if you measure it with rounded corners. The resolution is full HD+ at 1080×2340. At the top there is a notch for the front camera and a built-in fingerprint sensor, which is conveniently located.

Samsung used its own Exynos 9611 octa-core processor, which appears to be a minor update of the Exynos 9610 featured in the Galaxy A50. You get four 1.74GHz ARM Cortex-A53 cores and four 2.3GHz Cortex-A73 cores and Mali-G72 graphics. This chip has the same CPU, GPU and LTE capabilities as its predecessor, but supports higher camera resolutions.

That brings us to the phone’s biggest new feature, its 48-megapixel f/2 primary rear camera. It is paired with an 8-megapixel f/2.2 wide-angle camera and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. The front camera is also improved with a resolution of 32 megapixels and an aperture of f/2.

There are two variants of this phone, but both have 128GB of storage. The only difference is that you get 4GB for Rs. 22,999 or 6GB RAM for Rs. 24, 999. This is similar to how Samsung offered the Galaxy A50, and we think it is completely unnecessary to have two similar options. Unless you run a lot of heavy duty apps and games, you won’t be able to see much of a difference.

The battery is quite large at 4000mAh and 15W fast charging is possible, although you get a 10W charger in the box. Dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5, GPS, NFC and FM radio are available.

Our unit came with version 1.5 of Samsung’s One UI software, which runs on Android 9 with the August 2019 security update. One UI is designed primarily for phones with a large screen, and while it looks clean and modern, we’re not fans of the large icons and wide specifications all over. Thankfully, you can adjust the size and density of the home screens and app drawer through their settings.

There’s a lot of empty space in the menus and it feels like the big screen is underutilized, especially in the notification shade and the Settings app, where a lot of scrolling is required. Still, the ability to lower the menus and controls so that even the top bars are easily accessible is very welcome. Many features are also hidden, including Secure Folder, Samsung Pay, Kids Space, Night Mode, Floating Apps, and combining the Dual Messenger app with an independent contact list.

Long pressing the right power button now brings up the Bixby voice assistant. To turn off the phone, there’s a small on-screen power button in the quick toggle that you open by swiping down from the top of the screen. To the left of the first home screen is also the Bixby home screen, with useful panels like game scores and reminders, as well as lots of promotional content.

Bixby Routines allow you to string together multiple commands with simple “if…then” scenarios. For example, you can tell the Galaxy A50s to change Wi-Fi and Bluetooth status, sound profile, display changes, screen lock shortcuts, and accessibility settings, and allow it to perform certain actions, such as opening a website or sending an SMS. All of these things can be activated at the same time when you move or enter a location, connect a device, open a specific application, receive a call, and/or pair with a specific Bluetooth device.

The Super AMOLED panel allows for an ambient display, although by default the phone is set to require a single tap when the phone is in standby mode to see the time and status icons. You can set it to be visible all the time or only at certain times.

You also have greater control over what content appears on the lock screen, as well as a choice of animated wallpapers or photo collections to rotate. Lock screen stories are pieces of content, some of which are advertising, that appear every time you wake your phone from sleep. You can disable this during the initial Android installation process.

Samsung also decided to use its Edge Panels feature, previously only seen on high-end phones with curved glass sides. This small, visible tab can be placed on either side of the screen and pulled in to reveal one or more vertical bars containing shortcuts to contacts or applications, or small tools or content sources. You can download additional bezels through Samsung’s Galaxy Store.

There are several preloaded apps: Facebook, Netflix, OneDrive, and the Samsung Galaxy Store and Game Launcher. When we set up this phone, we were told that if you don’t use it for three days or more, the apps will “go to sleep,” meaning they won’t refresh their content and you might not get any more notifications. This can be disabled in the battery settings, but it’s still important to note that the default setting is unusual and can cause unexpected notification delays.
