Recently, Samsung has produced smaller and better devices for an incredibly high price. Case in point is the Galaxy J8 (review) which for the life of me can’t figure out why it’s priced at Rs 19,000.

But after so many losses, things may be looking up for Samsung. This is because the recently revealed Galaxy A50 seems to be a step in the right direction.

For a price of Rs 19,990, the phone offers two very impressive things, a good camera, a great display. You can also add design to that list, which is subjective, but for a smaller and slimmer profile, I’d throw the Samsung over the Poco. If these are the two qualities (three if you add design) that you want in a smartphone then Samsung has got the perfect smartphone for you. If performance is what you’re looking for, you’ll be fine with the Poco F1 (View). Let’s learn more about the device.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and declare the A50 as one of the best displays under Rs 20,000 that I’ve had the pleasure of seeing. The color accuracy on the screen is definitely better than the Poco F1. I guess you can expect that from Samsung because it makes a lot of OLED panels and the 6.4-inch AMOLED display on the A50 is one of the best you can get.
A look at the images clicked on both the images shows that the Poco F1 shows a maroonish tint of bright red images and a slight yellow tint on a white background, which is not the case with the A50. The phone has several display modes, such as auto display, AMOLED cinema, AMOLED picture, and Basic. I recommend auto exposure mode as it offers more realistic viewing colors. I will say that I see a very slight blue tone on the screen but it’s nothing to worry about.

The lighting on the phone is really amazing. I can read everything clearly on my phone even under sunlight. The screen is still very dim at night, although it can get very dark at times, so I recommend keeping the brightness at 25 percent when reading at night. Samsung has also thrown in a blue light filter for nighttime reading.
Talking about the drop mode above or as Samsung calls it, the Infinity U display, I think Samsung has taken a good line for a great viewing experience. This happens to be the first flagship Samsung smartphone I’ve reviewed and I believe the company has done a great job. You can save the deck if you want too.
Another thing that should attract people to this device is that it has a triple camera system. This is not something you can find in a phone under Rs 20,000. The nicest thing about the camera is the inclusion of a wide angle lens which I am very excited to try.
The Galaxy A50’s triple camera setup includes a 25MP low-light sensor, an 8MP wide-angle lens and a 5MP depth sensor. The ultra-wide lens on the phone offers a 123-degree field of view that captures more of the same exact spot in the frame. Even though a wide-angle sensor is large, the image will be shifted at the edges, giving the background image shift at the sides. It’s still nice to see how large the field of view of the ultra wide sensor is over the normal one.

The 25MP main lens is featured as a low light sensor and I have to say I’m mostly not disappointed. The phone doesn’t have a dedicated night mode in the camera options but the ‘World’s Best’ recognizes low-light conditions and adjusts accordingly. The camera also has good noise reduction which is not something I can say for the Poco F1. However, there are situations where the camera does not recognize low light scenes and produces a dull image that lacks detail and detail. Apart from that, Poco F1 has better display detail and customization compared to Galaxy A50.
Apart from the low light performance, the phone takes very colorful pictures in daylight scenes and also shows a very strong range. The Poco F1 doesn’t print the most accurate color photos or have the most dynamic range, but it captures more detail in the image. For many people this is not a dealbreaker as the vivid and colorful images are stylish. The third lens is a depth sensor used for vivid bokeh shots.
Bokeh effect or Live Focus also work well, with background separation often working. The front camera also has a 25 MP sensor that takes good pictures but even with the beauty mode turned off, the sharpness of Samsung’s eyes is visible.
In terms of video, the phone captures good continuous videos which can be attributed to the EIS on the device. Other than that at night, the videos look decent, but the second ultra-wide sensor does a very poor job. The phone can also record slow motion videos at 720p @ 480 fps.

OneUI is something I’ve been interested in since I got the A50 for review and I have to say I’m very happy with what Samsung has done. I have the hated TouchWiz experience or the redesigned version called Experience UI which in my humble opinion is a collection of useless features and bloatware thrown together to call an Android experience. With OneUI, which runs on Android 9.0 Pie, Samsung has done things a little differently and tried to make the stock Android experience more.
The drop down menu is now accessible. Dragging down the notification bar covers the entire screen with icons that are easy to access with just a swipe of your finger. In general, all the icons are now bigger (they can be shrunk) and the menus have less information than before. Apart from that, the software is very customizable with different themes and skins. Samsung seems to have kept in mind the users with small hands, who are tired of using the search option to find basic settings, while designing OneUI.
There’s also the question of bloatware, such as duplicate apps for the gallery, browser, and even the Galaxy store, which sit on the home screen and can’t be removed but don’t seem to slow down the UI. The digital health feature is a nice touch though, telling you how many times you’ve unlocked your phone is the only benefit I can get from it. I hope Samsung builds on this UI to make it even more perfect and give its fanbase a better Android experience.
The Galaxy A50 is a powerful phone and it also looks stunning. While it certainly doesn’t have the triple rear of the Oppo F11 Pro (shown), it does have a polycarbonate back. We get the blue color version which is really eye-catching. The triple camera setup is placed on the right side as seen on the Galaxy A7 (View) with the flash at the bottom.

At the bottom of the phone, there is a Type-C charging port, along with a speaker unit and a headphone jack. The left side of the phone is a flat cover for the hybrid dual-SIM card slot. On the right side, there are the on/off and power buttons. The device does not have a physical fingerprint sensor as Samsung decided to get an in-screen fingerprint sensor.
On the front, we have the Infinity U display which is a nice way to design a high-end display and has a barrel that is as big as the one on the Poco F1. The device has a slim fit and feels balanced and slim to hold which makes it better than the Poco in terms of design.
Unfortunately, the performance for Samsung in mid-range phones is not strong, or at least the performance is worth the money. Not because Xiaomi came to the party anyway.
