At this point, everyone is at least aware of Samsung’s Galaxy S flagship phones like the Galaxy S10 and S10+, and its less expensive sibling, the $750 Galaxy S10e. However, once you look beyond those to something even more affordable, Samsung’s portfolio gets messy very quickly.

Among Samsung’s many budget and mid-range offerings, there are a dizzying number of phones that all look the same. To make things even more confusing, depending on the carrier you’re on, the same phone can have two different names as seen with T-Mobile’s Galaxy J7 Star and Verizon’s Galaxy J7 V 2nd Gen.

With the $350 Galaxy A50, Samsung is clearing the clutter and going after some of the best budget and mid-range handsets on the market. With a retail price of $350, the Galaxy A50 slots nicely between the $300 Moto G7 and the $400 Pixel 3a. It also adds a few features that the other two don’t have, such as dual rear cameras and an in-display fingerprint reader.

From the outside, the Galaxy A50 looks like the Moto G7. Both phones have selfie cameras that sit on a central notch that dips into their screens, large, very bezel-less displays, and glossy round backs.

However, when you look closer, you start to notice that everything looks and feels more polished on the Galaxy A50. The bezels on the A50 are thin, the barrel is small, and although it is the same size, Samsung has packed a 6.4-inch 2340 x 1080 OLED screen on the Galaxy A50, while the Moto G7 has to be good with 6.2 inches 2270 x . 1080 LCD. So not only is the A50 screen bigger, it’s brighter and more colorful too.

Both phones come with headphone jacks and microSD card slots for expandable storage. But on the back, the A50 has a 25 MP main camera, along with an 8-MP 123-degree wide-angle camera and a 5-MP depth-sensing lens to help with custom photos. That’s a nice improvement over the single cameras found on almost every other phone in this price range. And while the back of the A50 is plastic instead of glass like you get on the G7, Samsung officially calls the material “glass” (I’m not kidding), and it’s hard to tell the difference.

Samsung Galaxy A50s Review: Good Upgrade But Still Similar To Galaxy A50

In terms of photography, the Galaxy A50 performs better than the G7, thanks to better overall sharpness, color saturation, and, importantly, low-light performance. Indeed, in every way, the A50 is a better device than the Moto G7.

However, when placed against the Pixel 3a, the Galaxy A50 does not fail. Even though it has a smaller camera on the back, the Pixel 3a’s photo quality is excellent, producing photos with better detail and clarity than any other phone in this price range.

Take, for example, a shot of some flowers taken by both phones (See image below). While the A50’s shot is sharp and clear, its color saturation overshadows details like wrinkles on flower petals. And in low light, the Pixel 3a offers better sensitivity, resulting in brighter, clearer photos. Because the A50 doesn’t have a dedicated night mode, the Pixel 3a’s Night View feature makes the image quality gap between the two phones even wider.

It’s a similar story for performance, where on benchmarks like WebXPRT 2015, Geekbench 4, and 3DMark, the A50 and Moto G7 lead to comparable results. On Geekbench 4, the Galaxy A50 (5,536) outperforms the Moto G7 (4,624), correcting real-world performance where the G7 suffers from more lag and UI stutter than the A50. The Pixel 3a is the brightest of the bunch thanks to its Snapdragon 670 chip (like the Exynos 9610 in the A50). It did particularly well in the 3DMark Unlimited slingshot test (the Pixel 3a hit 2,581, which is 50 percent higher than the A50’s score of 1,682).

Samsung To End Support For Select Galaxy A Devices Next Year

While the A50’s image is better from a distance, if you zoom in closely, it’s easy to see where the Pixel 3a captures more detail.

And when it comes to battery life, with a time of 12 hours and 17 minutes on our video rundown test, the Galaxy A50’s 4,000 mAh battery completely smashes the G7’s mark of 9:29. Meanwhile, the Pixel 3a isn’t too bad at 11:51, while the larger Pixel 3a XL is slightly better with a time of 12:43.

This principle also extends to features such as the speaker (or speakers) on each phone, because while the Moto G7 and Galaxy A50 have mono speakers, the Pixel 3a offers true stereo sound. (Although I should point out that unlike the other two, the Pixel 3a doesn’t have an SD card slot.)

Hopefully, Samsung can improve the fingerprint sensor in the screen of the A50 through an update, because its the only feature in the whole phone that gives me some problems.

Samsung Galaxy A12 Long Term Review: Aging Ungracefully

The only real issue with the A50 is the in-display fingerprint sensor. I have to give Samsung credit for putting such a techy feature on a budget device, but in my experience, using it can be hit or miss. Normally, it has no problem reading my numbers, but sometimes, it takes three or four taps to unlock the phone. And even after re-registering my publications several times, I could not fix the issue.

The most important thing in deciding which one of these devices to buy is the price. The $350 Galaxy A50 is better in every way than the $300 Moto G7, but it costs $50 more. Then there’s the Pixel 3a. For $400, it’s more of a mid-range machine. On the other hand, it has stereo speakers, higher performance, and a much better camera.

Although if you can find deals like this one from B&H which has the Galaxy A50 for $280, Samsung’s new budget handset is an easy choice. But more importantly, it seems that Samsung is putting more effort into affordable phones. With the price of today’s flagship phones pushing $1,000 or more, the increased competition in the budget/mid-range segments is something to celebrate. By discontinuing the Galaxy J series, Samsung left the new-level Galaxy A models to take on the mid-range and budget segments.

Faced with stiff competition from Chinese phone brands, the South Korean giant had to take bold steps to maintain its dominance, hence the birth of the Galaxy A50.

Breaking: Galaxy A50 Starts Getting The Android 11 Update

Many phones, especially in the mid-range segment, have similar designs. For better or worse, Samsung joins the pack with generic-looking hardware. People mistake the Galaxy A50 as the new model from OPPO or Xiaomi at first, and I can’t blame them.

The Galaxy A50, like every other phone on the market today, has an edge-to-edge display with small bezels all around. Of course, you must have a notch to have a front camera. The advantage of the Galaxy A50 is its use of a Super AMOLED panel. With deep blacks and punchy colors, the phone’s display is truly a treat.

What is not maintained is the fingerprint reader. It takes about two seconds to unlock the phone using the in-display scanner. Using it in conjunction with facial recognition makes things a lot more complicated and I often end up entering my PIN.

I’m not particularly a fan of the phone’s ordinary aesthetics, but that’s moot. The previous Galaxy A phones had the qualities of a body that was of high quality, such as an aluminum body or a thick glass plate. Unfortunately, the Galaxy A50 does not have premium touch.

However, the Galaxy A50 is still able to introduce itself to the crowd of flashy phones. Samsung is trying to emulate Huawei’s famous gradient color options. The main color of my unit is black, but when the light hits it, it produces a prism-like effect. Basically, black is not the only color of the unit.

The Galaxy A50 is equipped with a flagship level processor, which is an amazing move from Samsung. Samsung’s midrange phones often have so-so functionality that disappoints fans. The company finally realized it was time to step up their game.

Powering the Galaxy A50 is a 10nm processor – the Exynos 9610 to be exact. The Samsung in-house selected processor has more than enough power to deliver smooth performance and has 6GB of memory. Coupled with Mali-G72 MP3 graphics, it is also a good phone for gaming, which is what consumers are asking for.

Out of the box, Android 9 Pie already comes with Samsung’s One UI customization. Samsung’s new take on Android is the most refreshing we’ve seen from the company, and it works well on their devices. It also comes with additional features that should be on hand.
